I just tried to fight The Nightmare at the end of "Here lies the abyss", but after doing about 1/4 of damage the whole party was dead. First off I should probably try to level up, since the recommended levels were 12 to 14 and I was only a 10. But I'm also wondering what party I should bring? Apparently The Nightmare is vulnerable to electricity and spirit, so should I take Vivienne with me?

Ooosh. I can imagine that fight on Nightmare while underleveled would be quite a chore.
How's your gear? My entire NM run went infinitely smoother once I got some Tier 3 schematics and some Fade-Touched Obsidian for my melee peeps.
Other than leveling up, improving your gear would be the best way to make that fight easier.

Eh, I was level 15 when I fought it. What difficulty level are you on?
Remember, that Nightmare can deal insane damage with his "charge" attack - if he flies straight into your character, it's unlikely that this character will survive without Barrier/Guard on (at least that was the case on Nightmare difficulty for me).
Remember about Dispel (any mage) and Spell Purge (Cassandra or your Templar Inquisitor, if you happen to play that class) to take down his barrier.
When spider things come, kill them immediately - focus on party on one and kill them as fast as you can. They deal both ranged damage and malee damage and can be dangerous, especially to your rogues and mages.
You can try taking Vivienne (KE's blade deal spirit damage) or Dorian (he applies Walking Bomb/Spirit Mark which both deal spirit damage over time). Apart from that, have electricity staves for your mages. I advise 2 mages, a tank and possibly a ranged rogue, or two-handed warrior. Depends on what class are you playing.
Try taunting Nightmare and keeping him on a shielded warrior. Remember that you can revive fallen party members.
Wait with using Focus abilities till it is necessary, especially if you're using Mark of the Rift. I advise to use it in the end stages of the fight, when Nightmare summons Terror demons.

I'll try to get my hands on some schematics for my gear!
I'm playing on normal (I'm more the storyline kind of girl, as opposed to someone who loves battles and tactics), but it really didn't help my rogue (Double Wield) much. I had Cassandra, Iron Bull and Dorian in my party, and it actually went rather well, until the Aspect of the Nightmare showed up. I guess I'll just have to level up and then take your advice to heart.
Thank you!

Boss fights who summon adds are trivialized if you use 1 rift mage in your party.

Or a Necro... or a KE... basically any mage makes it easy.
Also, bringing a tempest rogue makes the fight trivial as well.

Or more importantly than all that, being at a reasonable level for the fight.
Level 10 aint going to cut it.

Yeah, I agree. That really was the main problem.

Dispels and electric/spirit damage on mages are essential. Leveling helps too of course. That was the hardest fight in the game for me. All downhill from there.
