Isabela had some delightful character development through the course of DA2. One of the many overlooked things about it
Loved her relationship with Aveline in particular grow over time ![]()

Isabela, by quite a bit. I was expecting to like Sera...but just didn't. Don't mind the accent, just did not enjoy the character really.

One of my friends was talking about Sera early in release, and how much he liked her. I got an IM from him the other day saying, "Okay, I am in the 'I hate Sera' camp now."
I don't know, the whole, "I hate nobles, blah blah blah. Nobles are shite. Nobles are bad" trope is old and annoying.

Bad comparison. Sera is nothing like Isabela and vice versa. If you want to compare her to a bioware character overall, it should be Jack.
You're using two women with completely different personalities.
In that case.
Jack>>>>>Sera
The problem for Sera is she doesn't grow or evolve at all, her character stay the same from the start. I'm not saying she has to change entirely, and she can stay true to her character, but I find Sera lack of character development...and not to mention she's trying to choke us with her opinion. I'm not sure this is a good place to criticize Sera, but one of the many reasons I like Isabela and Jack more is...I understand their speech, their motivation, their reason. Beside Sera is just annoying.
As for Isabela vs Sera
Isabela is far superior character than Sera.

Sera owns Isabella anytime. I liked Isabella but people liked her mostly because of her looks. Sera is a much deeper character with many shades.

So i love both sera and isabela. Who i like the best...its hard to say at this point.
I agree that sera could have been fleshed out a bit more but honestly every party member would have been better off with an extra companion mission.
That saying, both have made me laughed a bunch.
Varric + isabela= gold
Sera+bull= more gold

I'm more neutral about Izzy, but was surprised by how much I enjoyed Sera. So Sera > Izzy for me.

I was hoping for something like Lori Petty's version of Tank Girl, but got something more Tyler Durden-ish (only with less charm).
The only thing, for me, more annoying about Sera at this point is being lectured on how much I should like her and these-are-the-things-that-must-be-wrong-with-you-for-not-liking-her fecal matter. ![]()

Zevran would win. He is an smartarse assassin, while Cole is just boring.

I prefer Sera as a character, honestly. There's a mystery as to why she truly acts the way she does (The "cookie" story is not the whole story. That's just about cookies). It seems she confuses herself with her language sometimes, and that's really telling. And she really does seem to care about the "little people". And it takes a big person to admit to being selfish, which she does (Grudgingly, it seems. But I wouldn't just say "Let's join the inquisition because little people." myself)
And I have no problem with her voice, but I've been raised on accents that weren't my own....soooooo.
It seems I'm making excuses for her, at times, because the fans that hate her are much more vocal than the ones that like or love the character.
It's just I've never liked "I'm sexy lolz" characters. She shows that side of her personality, but the weight of her past doesn't show quite so much. We don't know Sera's past and it shows that it's changed her, perhaps for the worst. I like that kind of writing. But that's just my opinion.

Very much this.
But as to choosing between them, can't I have both? I mean... Woof.

It depends on what you want out of a companion. Sera is at least loyal. Isabela isn't. I like Isabela, but I wouldn't trust her with anything ever. Sera I could trust to stick with me and if she disagreed she'd at least say that. That being said I infinitely enjoy my interaction with Isabela more.

I'm pretty neutral with both, but Zevran wins because he's funny. Cole has some endearing moments and gets under Vivi's skin, so it's kinda close.

Sera reminds me of an immigrant friend who would regularly put down her parents' culture/perceived culture, and mock her own ethnicity with typical stereotypes. She grew up in an environment that said she is less, and lashed out at the "lesser" part of herself in an attempt to fit in. It is painful to watch.
I think you are reading too much of your friend into Sera then. Because she doesn't do that. She's opposed to discrimination and "I'm better than you" from anyone. Not just human vs elf. But elf vs elf and elf vs human and human vs human. She's not Dalish. She's not running away from the culture she was raised in. She's from Denerim.
She thinks Briala sucks because Briala only cares about elves and is willing to hurt everyone else because of it. If the Dalish didn't run around telling everyone else how much better they are than humans and city elves because they are ancient elf wannabes, she wouldn't dislike them either.

Maybe it's just me but I never saw anything mysterious about her. Even if there is a mystery in there somewhere, I'd personally never want to solve it. That's the problem about her character. There is a complete lack of balance such that the loud, psychotic and obnoxious side will overshadow whatever nuances might be there to redeem her.

Sera is an idiot, but she grew on me. Since Isabella ditched me I dislike her.
