I'd like to ask something about Hawke. To preface this, I should mention that I've only just reached Skyhold and went through all the conversation options with Hawke at this time. Going through these options, you get the choice to ask why Hawke's alone, and he/she'll go on to say why he/she isn't with his/her love interest at that time. My question might be specific to my choices, but I'd like to know your thoughts.

 

I romanced Merrill in DA2, and in the Keep, I chose the Diplomatic option for Hawke's general attitude. When discussing Merrill with him, he will say that Merrill has spent enough of her life fighting for him and doesn't want to take her away from the city elves in Kirkwall. That in itself doesn't sound too bad, but the thing that threw me off was the tone in which he'd said it. He seemed solemn, and almost depressed when giving his explanation. That got me thinking about the state of Hawke and Merrill's relationship, and that's the question I'd like to pose to you.

 

I can only speak for as far as I've went through the story, but looking at the Wiki, I can't find any more information on the issue. Based on what we're told and the manner it's been told in, what can we assume about the state of Hawke and his/her LI's relationship, specifically with Merrill?

 

I personally hope they're just keeping a long-distance relationship while they're both needed in separate places. I get that Bioware has artistic authority and can do whatever they like, for better or worse. I'm just a big sucker for the whole "-and they lived happily ever after" conclusion. Anyway, discuss?

Yeah Hawke's life is now officially a complete train wreck.  The Champion doesn't even get to stay with the LI. 

 

Looks like Varric lied to Cassandra about that too.

It sounded more like he knew she wanted to join him but he told her no, then explained why he refused her aid.

To me, he hated having to leave her behind, but he knew she was needed where she was and that she'd only be in more danger where he was going, and that's not something he wanted for her.

That's definitely the direction my thinking's been heading in, and it makes the most sense. Taking that on board, it still begs the question of whether they decided to remain together. I can only assume they did, knowing everything they've been through.

Well in my world state Hawke romanced Anders and she said last time they faced Cory he took control over Anders and she didn't want to put him through that again which made perfect sense...I'm assuming Hawke and their LI are still happy together even tho they're temporarily away from each other, no matter who Hawke's LI is.

If you romamced Fenris, Hawke says she basically snuck out so that he couldn't follow her. Her reasoning was "He would die for me. I didn't want to give him a chance to." Personally I find that a weak argument. I was so hoping for a scene where Fenris shows up at Skyhold and furiously chews Hawke for leaving him behind without so much as a warning. That fight would be both terrifying and amazing.

My Hawke and Isabela understand why they had to part ways for awhile, but she is looking forward to reuniting with Isabela after she has done her quest, and worried that Isabela is having a bit too much fun.

No kidding. And to make matters worse, if you ask Varric later about Hawke's companions, Varric says Fenris is off in Tevinter fighting slavers or magisters (forget which). Seriously? So Hawke and Fenris are WHOLE COUNTRIES apart? I was not demanding a fairy tale happy ending for them, but that's ridiculous. It's not like they can Skype or something lol Do they just go years without seeing each other? Are they even still together??

 

And then AFTER the Hawke quest...

No kidding. And to make matters worse, if you ask Varric later about Hawke's companions, Varric says Fenris is off in Tevinter fighting slavers or magisters (forget which). Seriously? So Hawke and Fenris are WHOLE COUNTRIES apart? I was not demanding a fairy tale happy ending for them, but that's ridiculous. It's not like they can Skype or something lol Do they just go years without seeing each other? Are they even still together??

 

And then AFTER the Hawke quest...

My Hawke's love llfe confused DA2 (elf > Isabela > Anders > Zevran w/ Isabela), and thankfully I was able to edit things in The Keep: Isabela who probably encouraged Hawke to "live it up" while she was out there.

I had a diplomatic Hawke who romanced Anders and... well, killed him, so that's probably why they aren't together anymore.

 

Hearing her talk about it was sad, though. She said that all she could do for him was "put him down" once he was driven to madness.

Hawke's excuse was pretty much bs imo, at least for Fenris-romancing Hawkes. Makes sense though, if I like a pairing it tends to pretty much get ignored/crapped on.

Not to mention she just trots off to Weisshaupt like "..reunion? With the guy I love? Nah I'd much rather be forced into another stupid and contrived plot situation." *grumbleannoyedfangirlgrumble*

 

It was so OOC for my Hawke, along with many other things about her cameo. At least I can headcanon a pretty.... entertaining reunion eventually. Well, not for Hawke. I honestly feel a bit bad for her. I foresee lots of yelling.

Well, snarky Hawke was kind of a douche-canoe, so I can totally see him or her dicking out on their LI at the worst possible time. I'm sure running off to save the world again sounded like a totally sensible idea at the time...

Fenris is gonna eat his ass alive tho. LOL, I wouldn't wanna be there for that lover's quarrel.

Yeah, that isn't my Hawke (nevermind I can't change his appearance without it screwing up my Inquisitor's voice). My Hawke was snarky, but kind, and liked Anders and spared his life. But talking to him, he sounds like an a-hole who ran off on Fenris which he would NOT have done, and he sounds like he hates Anders- which he does not, just feels bad for him and angry about what he did.

So, that's not my Hawke and I feel nothing for him. Does not bode well for his future quest /eyeroll

My Hawke was sarcastic and romanced Merrill as well, and he sounded the same. I did get the impression he was sad about having to leave her behind in Kirkwall rather than they broke up or anything though.
There's also banter between Cassandra and Varric, for a Merrill romance at least, where Varric says Merrill is going to follow him to Weishaupt. So I think their relationship is fine.

I don't think it would have been too big a problem if Hawke's response about Fenris wouldn't have been foreshadowing stuff that hasn't happened already.  Because that's what it was doing, stating things that haven't happened yet. All Hawke had been doing so far is looking for the Grey Warden's nothing that would mean "Fenris would end up dead"

I had an aggressive Hawke who rivalmanced Fenris. Yeah, he was just the a-hole I made him. Shouting at everyone and everything. He would be the kind of guy to sneak out on Fenris in the stupid belief that it would be good for him. They were terrible for each other, but I enjoyed the carnage of that world state.

 

My other Hawke was a diplomatic Anders friendmancer. She didn't agree with what he did though, and said that she would never get over that betrayal but was going to try and make it work. His reason for not being there made some sense. I'm glad he wasn't because Varric's reaction to my decision was bad enough. I'm guessing Varric has no idea where blondie is? Because he said he'd send a letter to Bethany, but that was all.

My Hawke's romanced either Anders or Fenris, and left them behind which to my knowledge is verily OOC of my characters. She also sounded verily angry with Anders which most of my Hawke's were verily supportive of Anders and didn't give a flying crap he blew up a chantry. She wanted to murder knife Seabastine for threatening her home though, I based her off of Harley Quinn somewhat. She would never be mad at Anders since she hated Meredith and Elthina. And would never leave her boo alone, nor whould Ariela Hawke whom romanced Fenris.

Anders being left behind really did make sense. She even moves Carver out of the country in the fear that what was happening to the Grey Wardens would affect her family.
