Maybe I haven't seen enough cutscenes with her, but I was rather disappointed not to see Cassandra use her Seeker skills at all (similar to Fenris' use of his ghosting ability to kill slavers and such), and a even more confused as to why there was no option to use that skill in combat. Yes, she gets the templar abilities later, but that honestly doesn't make sense considering she says that Seekers don't have templar abilities or use lyrium. The same is true of Cole. The thing that makes him special (his being a spirit) is not utilized at all in combat, unless you really stretch it to say that his sneak is him making people forget him. I recognize that each of the companions gets a "unique" subclass, but the Inquisitor can then copy exactly the abilities of any of them in his/her major class. The Inquisitor has his/her own special mini-subclass (what a terrible term for it, but whatever, I can't think of a better one), why can't the rest? It would be similar to the class powers in Mass Effects 2 and 3 (Quarian Machinist, Pure Biotic, Alliance Officer, etc.). They could even be Focus powers if that's what was determined to be the balancing factor. For example:

Note: Sorry, but I don't know how to do the spoilers thing, so I'm just making the text white and putting it in parentheses. Highlight it with your mouse if you want to see. More apologies if that doesn't effectively hide them from you.

Blackwall: An inspiration based ability that increases aim/damage/something for the party. He spent a good deal of time recruiting for the Grey Wardens *SPOILERS*(as well as his experience as an Orlesian captain)*SPOILERS*, so his ability to rally a group makes sense. However, it's pretty similar to Horn of Valor, so perhaps something else.

Cassandra: Her Seeker ability to ignite lyrium would be astoundingly useful against mages and templars, but of much less use against non-magical enemies.

Cole: Reverses any psychological healing the target has achieved to do significant spirit damage.

Dorian: Zero idea, actually. Which is embarrassing considering I like him so much. I'd suggest a time magic ability, but those are unhealthy for reality, so...maybe something to do with dragons? 'Cause Tevinter? I dunno'.

Iron Bull: Reminds the group of the Qunari training he's been showing them. Gives immunity to status effects like panic, knock down and stun. Other things could be added like immunity to chill, poison, sleeping, and possibly even paralyzation if you rationalize that he has been sharing antidotes and/or formulas that the Qunari use (obviously the ones that don't cause instantaneous death to non-Qunari).

Sera: A prank/Red Jenny power that causes a random (and relatively long lasting) status effect and/or cause damage to themselves. I'm thinking something along the lines of a hotfoot causing panic and minor fire damage, pants falling off causing slow/knocked down and some cold damage (can't run around with no pants on, you'll catch chill!) or just plain damage from falling over, an effect like the bees in a jar grenade without having to make them, etc.

Solas: Asks spirits to boost party resistances or stats. Possibly random, since it's probably a pain to make the ability recognize factors of the situation like the enemies nearby and what attacks/elements they'd likely use, but the randomness can easily explained that spirits don't have enough experience in the physical world to accurately judge what exactly would be helpful. Obviously this power would be a gamble, but a potentially very helpful one.

Varric: Flicks some coins onto the battle field that distracts all enemies in the AOE and makes them reselect their targets. Obviously he'd be sure to pick them up later.

Vivienne: Some sort of charm spell/ability that would stun or cause confusion (attacking allies) in a small Aoe. I feel like confusion is a bit too much like blood magic mind control for her, but that would work too.

Obviously these are just ideas, but something unique for every one would be nice, and you could add a passive ability like the Inquisitor has as well. I'd also suggest some special powers for temporary companions like Hawke, but since you can't actually control them, that seems of less importance. Still, you'd think the Champion of Kirkwall would have picked up a trick or two that distinguishes him/her from other fighters. At the very least make his/her sword glow or add a special effect to his mage blasts or something.
