As a citizen of Kangarooland and someone who had been interested in purchasing GTA V when it releases on PC, this is somewhat relevant to me personally.

But let's just stick to the facts and have a civil discussion.

The Forbes Article:

The Australian branch of mega-retailer Target has pulled copies of the bestselling video game Grand Theft Auto V after a petition to have it banned garnered over 40,000 signatures.
...
“We’ve been speaking to many customers over recent days about the game, and there is a significant level of concern about the game’s content,” Target executive Jim Cooper said in a statement.

“We’ve also had customer feedback in support of us selling the game, and we respect their perspective on the issue,” he added. ”However, we feel the decision to stop selling GTA5 is in line with the majority view of our customers.”

The Guardian Article:

In her review of GTA V last year Carolyn Petit of news site Gamespot wrote, “GTA V has little room for women except to portray them as strippers, prostitutes, long-suffering wives, humorless girlfriends and goofy, new-age feminists we’re meant to laugh at.”

The News Corp Article:

One of the petitioners, who has asked to be referred to only as Nicole for fear of further reprisals from the gaming community, said GTA5 had “upped the ante” on previous titles because it allowed gamers to play in first-person mode.

...

Detractors also say that the game is equally violent towards men, but Nicole said this argument didn’t hold water because the vast majority of sexual crimes were committed against women. “This is the argument we hear every time violence against women is mentioned. Even on White Ribbon Day, there are cries of ‘But it happens to men, too’.

“This is hardly a gender-neutral argument. Implicit in it is the very misogyny we are rallying against.”

So, opinions? Thoughts? Agree with the move, disagree with the move? Comment here and be respectful.

Misogyny? I've said this before have these women seen what you could do to Mr. K? It's just as tormenting (and out of place for GTA.) than running down a prositute. Or what about the horrible fates Micheal and Trevor could suffer in the end. And even then it's not just the prostitute you can kill it's everyone including women. A better example they could present though was what happened to Molly. But all in all, it's bad that GTA V is banned in Target Austraila but not surprising considering how anti-video game Austraila is over the years.

So..... were they cool with the torture? Seems like it was just the strippers they had a problem with.

So it'd be fine of they added Chippendales-esque male dancers that you could murder, right? I mean, feminists lobby for equality, not special treatment, right? Because you can already kill men in Grand Theft Auto. So it must be that there are prostitutes and strippers. Otherwise... Oh boy, could it be? Are feminists making ridiculous, unwarranted complaints?! I'd certainly hope not.

So they banned a video game because it offends them?

That's stupid.

I know its this double standard that infuriates me. If that was a Mrs. K could you imagine the outrage?

Seriously though, it's just a game. I don't see the big deal about it.

Well unless Crusty misquoted the 3rd article. Apparently they don't feel violence portrayed against men is significant because the vast majority of sex crimes are committed against women... Didn't realize there was sex crimes in GTA but there you have it.

Hey let's keep this civil, at least GTA 5 is not banned FROM Australia just from their Target stores.

Well, that's means they're making progress. Trust me, it won't end with target.

What exactly does Target Australia gain from doing this? Elusive and ephemeral SJW customer goodwill doesn't translate into sales, as near as I can tell. It'd be one thing if they objected to the game on ethical/moral grounds and refused to carry it on that basis, but they didn't even have the guts to do that. All they did was cave to a small group of vocal loudmouths, and turn customers away.

Hope not selling one of the best selling games of all time due to inane cries of "muh soggy knee" is worth it Target Australia.

That's great. The removal of this hateful game will no doubt have a positive effect on the younger generation, making our society into something that doesn't romanticize crime and violence.

So basically violent crime against men in a video game is fine because sex crimes in reality are more commonly acted out on females. Therefore, violent crime against women in a video game should warrant the removal of said video game from store shelves.

It all makes sense now.

To be fair, my jab was directed at the nature of the complaint, rather than the effect it had.

Once you throw around a word too much, it starts to lose its impact.

To be fair, the myriad novels, motion pictures, television programs, comic books, music videos, pop and hip-hop songs, and advertisements that promote a destructive lifestyle as glamorous and attractive aren't being at all effected by this development. Nor will the removal of one video game have a significant effect on the positive portrayal of indecent behavior in media.

Fair point, the problem is not so simply solved.

A move to solve it is still nice. A small step, a small part of progress.
