Are there any bonuses to taking enemies from behind?

I was kind of wondering if there were flank bonuses to attacking because it seems more effective to be attacking the enemies because you know they aren't attacking you until they do attack you without turning around.

So are there flank bonuses? Because it seems quicker and safer to attack enemies that aren't trying to target you.

I remember that there was a sort of player flanked system in ME3MP where you took more damage out of cover than in cover. Is there a similar system in this game's multiplayer? That would be solid for teamplay.

Anyone know what's going on?

Yeah, there's a damage bonus associated with flanking.  I believe it's 25%, but it's been a while since I looked, so I could be wrong about that.

I heard a rumor that the flanking bonus thing is currently bugged.

I confess, I figured Crim was going to make the first one of these!

This is true, and it's not bugged. Using daggers with +% flanking damage mods and flank damage rings or skills that add damage on flank work very nicely playing assasin/alch or even shotgun hunter.

I personally felt it was more in line with the average means of interacting, like say, a chess game.

Yep Flanking gets a Damage bonus and Rogue archetypes ignore armor and even Sunder it so their team does more damage.

It's why Assassins will try to flank around to murder archers or big threats at the start of an engage.

Assassins also gain Isolation Damage (50% Bonus damage) which turns them into boss wreckers and One Shotter Machines.

In engagements, DPS should always try to get flanking, only the tank and mage should have the enemy facing. It's why most recommend a 2 - 2 strat.

It's a shame that this games definition of 'flank' is in fact just, the rear. You won't get that bonus if you attack an enemies side. You know, their flank...

25% base bonus. Can be increased via Flanking Damage Bonus % stat.

Same reason why Bioware's in-game 5 metres =/= real world 5 metres (from ME3 tooltip). Bioware uses its own metric system and definitions for words.

Well we don't really know how big anything is in the game. We assume the character are roughly human height but they could be 0.5 meters tall for all we know.

I guess that makes thread title even more important.

actually flanking takes two.  you need a friendly on the opposite side of the enemy.  does no one play d&d?

The thread is about taking them from behind, not double teaming them from both sides. I'm pretty sure that you get a penetration bonus though.
