For people that have gotten the PC version of Mass Effect 2, there is an unreal engine related problem (supposedly) that causes loading times to be several times longer than they should be. Using the elevator on the ship was such a chore until I found this fix. Unfortunately you have to do it each time you start the game, but it is simple.

Basically once you have started ME2, open up the task manager and set the CPU affinity for MassEffect2.exe to one CPU. Press OK to confirm the change, then immediately set the affinity back to both (or all) CPU's. This will result in a massive decrease in loading times.

I hope this issue is fixed soon.

EDIT: I do not take credit for this, I discovered this fix on the GameFAQs forums.

Now that doesn't sound good. I have yet to receive my copy here. However I have run into similar problems with some older games. For those I use WinLauncherXP. You can launch it from there and you can set the processor affinity per app.

You're probably doing something wrong, shouldn't have to do that.

I can back up his problem I have an E8500 duo core and it takes at least 20-30 seconds to load the CIC.  I just did what he recommended and it took 3 seconds.

Amazing fix thanks

There are dozens of games with this problem. And weirdly enough I rarely see a patch for it. Beats me what the hell the problem is.

I have an E8400 and the elevator load times on the Normandy SR2 are nearly instantaneous. But, the loading screens when you transition from different levels/land on planets is a bit long though.

Seems a little strange tbh.

Has anyone monitored what their CPU's are doing when this happens, i.e with and without the "fix", and then comparing the results?

pathetic Bioware, this used to be an issue 4 years ago when dual core's just came out on the market.

This and always helmet on are really weak amateurish problems .

the OP said it's an engine problem, it's not a BW fault since ME is not built using their own tech

All this time since Unreal 3 came out and NO ONE has bothered to fix this issue?
Epic just ignores the problem cause it is a PC issue?

How bad must the programming be for either Epic (Unreal 3 engine makers) or Bioware not being able to correct it?

Man I have to do the same thing with Dark Engine games like System Shock 2 and Thief.... but I'd expect that from a 10 your old engine, not a new one.

I opened task manager during a loading screen to apply the fix, and I noticed only a fraction of the CPU--less than 10 percent--was being used.

Is this the same problem that people were having with DA:O?

All my load times are extremely fast with no adjustments. Running Intel Q6600. The elevator on the ship loads in about 2 seconds.

Did DA have this problem? I only face the memory leaks :pinched: Loading times are zippy for me.

Yeah, DA:O loaded fine for me unles I had been playing it for quite some time, a classic symptom of a memory leak.

This issue sounds troubling. What if you have a Quad core? Is the problem still just as noticable?

There should be a patch to address this. Hopefully, patches won't take months like they do in Dragon Age.

Thanks for this. The best tip ever. Wish I had known about this before I finished the game first time.
