I just noticed how OP ranged fighting is, I killed two dragons safely and easily by hitting them at a very long distance. The dragon doesn't even move from his spot. I'm aiming for my third now.

My question is are all dragon battles this easy?

Did you try to take out the Highland Ravager in Emprise du Lion?

I'm still looking out where to find the other dragons, I plan on taking on the Storm Coast Dragon next.

I'm not too far in the main storyline, as I try to complete what I can accomplish in a map before moving on to the next :P

I just saw your thread, how is the terrain? Can you keep a large distance between your Archer/Mage?

My strategy. Me as a KE + Vivienne as a KE + casual difficulty = one dead dragon

Most of the dragons are not really hard. They don't move a lot and often stay on the ground. At low level it just takes a bit longer to kiil them.

I am a rogue archer. I hit the dragons from a distance. On my team is at least one good warrior with all the heavy stuff you can apply (armor, weapons, rings and amulets etc.). Then I have one good mage patched up with all the good equipment as well.

Rogues with daggers are not very good to put in your team when you fight a dragon. They die within a few minutes.

My 'dragon killer team' will be at least two heavily patched warriors (Cassandra, Blackwell or Iron Bull) plus one good mage.
If you are a warrior as well you will be even stronger.

The good thing about being a rogue archer is that you can go into cover and shoot from a distance while the others are on the battlefield.

I had Cassandra equipped with custom made armor and weapons plus the best unique rings and amulets.

If you want to craft good custom equipment you should go to Emprise du Lion and collect some 'dawnstone' metal and 'snoufleur skins'. Both Tier 3 materials. It gives you high rated armor. Both materials can be found just in the beginning of the map near the point you entered (there is a lake with snoufleurs running around, dawnstones are in the rocks).

I should mention that I don't use tactics. I fight them hack and slash. The abilities of my team is all I think of.

I just finished sweeping off the available quests on Emprise du Lions, haven't gotten across the bridge yet since they are still rebuilding it. Looks like I might be encountering it soon though.

I haven't seen the potential of crafting until recently, thanks for the tip! :)

I do agree DW party members are too fragile in Dragon fights, I like having Cassandra and Blackwall around they last longer compared to Bull. I've been exploiting long distance combat on other enemies as well and it works on them too, as long as you are in higher ground you have the advantage.

I'll try a more hands on approach on my next play though.

If you want a really good equipped team you can shoot snoufleurs on the lake for an hour or so. Not only are their skins Tier 3 as mentioned, but when you do it long enough you will get some 'fade touched' skins as well. You can use these skins to craft Masterworks items. I think you get a fade touched item for about every 200 skins.

Then I ran from the second camp at the mountain foot up through the caves to the third camp about 50 times to collect dawnstone and silverite (both Tier 3). I had about 1.000 snofleur skins and the same amount og dawnstone. In this way you can craft and equip your team with the best available custom armor and weapons.

I haven't yet used any of my dragon scales yet (Tier 4). I know it will be hard at the end of the game. I'm saving those for the real hard fights.

I forgot:

The terrain for all three dragons in Empire du Lion looks similar. Like old roman colloseums. You fight at the top of them. Except from the last one (Highland Ravager). He is sleeping at the bottom of the pit and doesn't fly around. Here's a fast copy and Paste from another site:

"Emprise Du Lion Highland Ravager – This is the last Dragon for the quest “Breeding Grounds”. Go around the tower so you don’t have to drop into the fight with low Hp. This is a lvl 23 Dragon and you better be ready for a fight. I would charge your focus before you start this fight to make it a bit easier. This is a fire Dragon.

She starts of sleeping so use your Tank to get the agro right away. She jumps around alot but when she jumps she does a spin attack so avoid it if you can. A new move you will see is a circle of fire that appears under you. You have about 3 seconds to get out of that before it blows up on you. She also does the armor and wing flap moves. She will roar and call allies like the last Dragon as ell. This is a good time to charge your focus again."

Best tip for killing dragons is: Use 2 one handed and shield tanks up front and keep them barriered the best u can.

1st slot : Tank is Cassandra with her skill tree Templar -all skills. reason: when she dies she heals the entire team!! Fill Vanguard tree after u fill templar.

2nd slot: Tank is Blackwall skill tree Champion fill it, key skill is to the death!! then fill Battlemaster but make sure you at least fill left side first, for Horn of Valor!!

3rd slot:  can be anyone really but i use Varric with artificer all filled, 2points on Subterfuge in stealth and lost in the shadows. then fill archery.

4th slot:  i am a spirit rift mage

takes me like 5-10min to kill a dragon but i rarely die or have to use potions..

hopes this helps!!! GL warrior!!!

I actually roll an all Rogue party against Dragons on any difficulty.

Either it all goes well and the dragon dies in seconds or it all goes to s*** and the whole party dies. There's no middle ground.

Once you get to mid game and have everyone generating guard from attacking plus barrier, dragons are not a problem anymore.

Resist potions / healing mist grenades / dispel helps a lot if you're more into action than tactics (since you won't have to move / dodge stuff nearly as much).

But to answer your question, no that is not the legit way to kill a dragon (by shooting it from max range without anyone else engaging it) it's an oversight on BioWare side and most likely will get fixed, since am 100% positive it wasn't their intention to transform the most epic fights into a target practice. I presume they will script it so as soon as Dragon takes damage it will "know" where you hit it from and take off and shoot fireballs until you engage it properly :D

The hardest dragon to fight, for me anyways, is the one the player has to take a boat to reach and fight. To make it easier, have you and your companions with a lot of electrical resistance

Whenever I fight dragons, I have Cassandra with me. She runs circles around it leaving any mage and archer to deal damage on the dragon without taking  no damage at all or at least very little damage

Did you mean like this?

If so you are not actually "fighting" the dragon you're just exploiting the AI.

I just killed the Hinterlands dragon but I feel dirty. I used fire flask then spammed thousand cuts, was careful not to hit it when the flask wore off and then just repeated it till it was dead, lol.

I have a 2H Reaver.  When I went for the Fereldan Frostback, I followed Prima's recommendation and brought Cass, Solas and Viv.  It wasn't pretty, but I did get through it eventually.

When I got to the Northern Hunter, I decided to change it up and brought Blackwall and Cass to tank, and only Solas for mage.  It was ridiculously easy, even though I had not a single item of Electric Resistance.  Solas lost 2 health bars and it never got through guard on the warriors.

Abyssal was a little tougher, but that was mainly because I forgot to take off upgraded Earthshaking, which has Fire damage on it.

Planning to take the boat tonight.

I agree, I confess I exploited this glitch against against a 2H elite guy on top of a fort, I think in Hinterlands. The guy killed all my party, except Varric and I just killed the elite slowly while he couldn't do anything about it.

Devs normaly fix this with "evade" mechanics, which can be very frustrating at times and bring a whole other set of glitches.

Instead of relying on resistance gear, you can dispel the electrical circles via mage dispel or templar spell purge =)

I'd rather just go in even as an archer, no fear even for the dragons!  https://www.youtube....dv2zetvwcxvxy04

Or play KE, stand next to dragon and spam spirit blade. For flavor, occasionally use the fade walk abilities to move around. Collect loot, then on to the next one. ;)

KE is showing how much the game is very poorly balanced sadly, I kill dragons 1vs1 on nightmare just thanks to the KE specialisation really ...

Though I've realised having a 4 mages team against dragons is crazy op, all from the distance, my KE tanking the dragon and doing the biggest damage and whenever the dragon is doing an aoe pause the time and order the moves. Pretty boring sadly ...

I was not able to dispel the circles. There's no debuff and dispel did not remove them. Of course, it's not hard to just make sure the group is spread out a bit. The AI knows not to cross the circles and they will not run back into each other.

or you know.... take blackwall, cast to the death, tank and spank for 20~30 seconds, then use a thousand cuts an watch that dragons hp drop from 80% to zero

at least on hard, nightmare coming soon... but i guess it'll be basicly the same thing, maybe go to 40 seconds of debuff stacking
