Hey guys!

I think this may sound dumb to a lot of people, but I've had problems dealing with ranged enemies in every DA game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not incompetent. I've beaten O and 2 on nightmare with FF turned on, and I'm halfway thru DA:I, with 2 dragons beaten. However I still take a lot of damage from ranged enemies and can't help but think I'm doing something wrong.

Now, on DAI, archers are a lot easier to deal with, I just close in on them or pull them to me  and CC the hell outta them until theyre dead, which doesn't even take long.

However, wraiths have been a pain in the *** and are the biggest responsible for unnecessary potion chugging. My issues are: 1) I cant pull them to me, so I feel I lose control of the battlefield. 2) Since they're stationary, it's a lot harder to taunt all of them, causing my squishies to take a lot of damage. 3) Very few CC abilities actually work on them. 4) The barrier they cast prevent me from rushing them, which in turn causes every single kill to take longer and my characters to take damage meanwhile. 5) Unless I use abilities that kill them in 1-3 hits like heart seeker I can't leave a squishy to kill them with auto attack, even Iron Bull dies to a single wraith 1-on-1. 6) Even when I manage to taunt all wraiths my tank goes down reaaaaaly fast when there are 5+ wraiths or a combination of wraiths with an Arc. Hor. or a Des. Dem.

What are your thoughts? What can I be doing differently? Is there any ability that destroys their barrier in 1 shot?

- Archers can 1 shot them. Both Full Drawn and Long Shot will take out a wisp.

-  They can be CCed, so freeze one.

- Dispel their barrier. Dispel is love, dispel is life! Don't leave home without dispel.

So, if there are 3 wisps: Have your archer(You should run with either Sera or Varric. Varric gives nice boost via Artificer!) use Full drawn as an iniatiator while you send your tank in. Then have your mage freeze another one. When your archer is done with Full drawn, use long shot on wisp nr.2. It should die. Then turn to the third one.

I've met them by Rifts almost exclusively and there I deal with them by disrupting the rift asap. They have low HP and their Barrier goes down with disrupt. They rarely come of of stun alive.

They're a pain on nightmare mode. Fire also helps when fighting them

Yeah, I tried that strategy, but my Herald/Inquisitor is the tank, so it never works :(

It could. Say have rogue, put Barrier on her/him, Stealth, go to Rift, get aggro, run away then Stealth meanwhile your main disrupts. All you need is less than 6 secs. But yeah, its harder for tank PC. Well, in that case what Matth85 and themikefest said. Wraiths are priority targets.

I had a little trouble with them in the past as well, though its the Terrors I hate the most.  More than 2 terrors using chain panic is so annoying and they seem to have a "threat drop" mechanic or something.

On wisps I run in with my tank first so they attack him.  As long as he positions himself facing them all he takes 1 damage (not always feasible but usually you can).  Then I just make sure my party only focuses whatever he is attacking.  I realize the AI in this game is a 1000 shades of Fraked up but it usually works out.  If one of my party members goes all Leroy Jenkins on one I usually use a snap disable on it and set my entire party to kill it (drops in less than 2 seconds).

Disrupting the rift is also awesome against them tho not always easy.  Send tank in first and then rush the rift with your inquisitor.  If your playing Tankquisitor then I realize that's not an option.

Just make sure a sword/shield warrior gets their attention first, and just use shield wall to deflect their shots while ranged takes them out 1 at a time.  If you don't get in melee range they won't barrier and their low health means they'll go down fast.

This requires use of the tactical camera and controlling each individual unit, though.  You've gotta keep Cassandra facing the Wraiths and make sure your ranged characters are all focusing the same wraith.  It's a little exhaustive, but when you're low level on Nightmare you have to use the Tactical Cam a lot anyways.

Bear with it until you can spec a rift mage, after that you just drop a Pull of Abyss on top of shard, followed by lightning cage, then use 1 chain lightning or adv Long Shot and there ya go.

Answer: Sera.

If you find a loose Wraith here and there, just Full Draw/Longshot oneshot it.

If you find a rift with 3+ of them, have Sera pop Flask of Fire, shield her (she's likely to get aggro) and oneshot 3-4 Wraiths with Longshot. The rest of the fight should be easy.

At rifts, remember you can Dispel the summoning of demons between phase 1 and phase 2. It should significantly lower the difficulty of the second wave in general. I've at times run with two mages, and Dispel combined with Flashpoint has allowed me to completely deny the second spawn wave, which prompts you to directly close the rift after the first wave is defeated.

Take Turn the Bolt, and they should hit your tank for only 1 damage, regardless of how many are shooting at your tank.

Assuming you are going up only against a horde of Wrath, make sure your tank is the first in their line of sight, this  ensures that all the Wraith will attack your tank by default. Now issue order to the rest of the party to take down the wraiths one by one, while your tank should simply stand still and ensure all Wraith are hitting him.

Can you share how you built your tank (gear and skills) because even when i stack lot of defensive passive skills, some enemies can still do heavy damage to her. I stack + melee and + ranged defense and Constitution in utility slot

Get a mage to attack from extreme range. The wraith won't even shoot back. Then, once the wraiths are dead, move in to deal with the other enemies.

I've had a lot of trouble with wraiths as well. I use a 2h tank and no mages so they tear through me like nothing.

if you have an archer a full draw into long shot will kill 2 of them right away, and having everyone else focus a third can work. If your herald is the primary tank you can send a secondary person in first to draw aggro and manually run around to avoid damage while the herald disrupts the rift.

The best option would be to line of sight pull, but the absolute bullshit phasing and leashing in this game stops any kind of tactical pulling. You can only run in blindly like a fool in this game.

I really wish some people stopped advising exploits to beat the game such as "attack the dragon from max staff range and it won't even fight back."

I doubt very much the purpose of the challenges of the game is to beat them without them fighting back and speaks very poorly of anyone that needs to resort to that to beat the game.

Thanks for the tips everyone! Dispelling the barriers helped a lot. Making sure the tank was the first to make LOS contact too and I'm also using a rift mage in my party now.

Another thing I did was make sure wraiths were going down asap using "Y" to command all companions to attack them.

Sadly, Rifts are designed in such a way, that this tactic (or more like an AI exploit) is not viable - too long distance, and Rift enemies disappear.

Works on some Rifts, but not all by any strech of the imagination.

I dispute that there is such a thing as beating the game.

There is merely playing the game, and you play it as you like.

I love sniping from extreme range, and this game does a terrific job of supporting that.

Even though I'm pretty sure it was a waste of a talent point from a min/max POV, I tell all my party members to hang back now so I can ****** slap the wraith's projectiles back at them until they're dead. It's the best. Ganonball ftw.

I believe sword-and-board warriors can reflect projectiles similarly, though I haven't figured out how since I don't take control of them for any extended period.

Block, aka. Shield Wall. It deflects EVERYTHING. Including dragon's fire/ice/electricity balls, and giants's boulder throw.
