Anastassia -- Thank you so much for that post about Carth. All the hatred he gets is entirely unfair and over the top, in my opinion. Disliking a character is one thing, but it really seems like dogpiling on Carth has just become the cool thing to do on the internets lately. And the same goes for all the crap Kaidan gets by proxy just because they have the same voice actor. I mean, really? That's essentially all the two characters have in common, yet people seem to think that just because they have the same voice, they must be the same person. I completely boggle every time I see someone describe Kaidan as "whiny" when he's really anything but.
Indeed, people do love to hop on the bandwagon when it comes to Carth and Kaidan. I'm gonna go on record saying that I like both characters, despite the differences. And also the fact that Raphael Sbarge could make me so mad at Kaidan is just a testament to his great work.
I always wonder if a lot of the people who express hatred toward the two characters actually even bothered to talk to them, or if they're just going on what other people tell them to think.
Now, me personally, I didn't hate on Kaidan or Carth. Unfortunately, I didn't use Carth much towards the end of KOTOR because I was fighting legions of lightsaber-wielding Sith, which made Carth kinda useless gameplay-wise. But other than that I never had issue with him. I had more issue with Bastilia being such a stubborn ass about being in love with you. Honestly, those "romances" where one party is too proud or stuck up to admit they love you bugs me.
Kaidan? Honestly, he was alright. One of the
only characters without some kind of parental issue (srsly, everyone else has family problems or is estranged from their folks, wtf BW?!) or massive skeletons in his closet. What bugged me about Kaidan was his overall reluctance during the ME1 romance. But then, all the LIs had problems:
Ashley had all the subtley of a rampaging bull. You're not even really aware she's into you romantically until Ilos.
Liara, being a teenager, develops an almost puppy-like infatuation with you and goes from zero to cling in under 30 seconds.
Kaidan was always somewhat reluctant to say anything. Supposedly he was afraid of repeating past mistakes, but why? He's talking to Commander
goddamn Shepard!
I won't even begin to rant about how Horizon pissed me off. I'll just sum it up as: The moment you so much as utter the word Cerberus, apparently nothing else you could ever say matters, and they zone out your entire conversation. I'm glad at least Garrus points out the ridiculous fixation on Cerberus. Also, Kaidan's email didn't score him any points, because he sounds reluctant. But again, it's nothing against Kaidan specifically so much as how the situation was handled.
Now, as for Jacob, to be honest, whoever it was that was mad at Jacob for taking the rejection so badly obviously forgot how Shepard does everything but demand he bang her on the armory room floor. For her to suddenly go cold at the last second stinks of stringing him along, which is just
mean.
On that note, I am livid upon comparing the different rejection vids
- Thane gets off the easiest, with something that doesn't even resemble a rejection. More like Shepard misinterpets his fear, and he thanks her for helping him, though you get the sense it wasn't the answer he was looking for. Still by far one of the gentlest let-downs.
- Jacob gets at least two, if not three chances for Shepard to act as those her "rejections" are her being coy and playing hard-to-get, and to jump his bones. Only the final dialogue is a rejection, and then it's only a "We'll get our day, Mr. Taylor." with Shepard STILL sounding coy about it.
- Garrus on the other hand feels like a total-letdown. Basically he's trying his hardest to make a good impression on Shepard, and her brush-off about "We shouldn't ruin our friendship" in that tone of voice feels like she's embarassed by his floundering. His excuse of "Yeah, probably torn a ligament" makes it blatantly obvious they were intending to get close and intimate, and then they focus on the wine
which he bought just for you.
...Does anyone else notice the rather ridiculous difference between the three? I mean, why does Thane or Jacob get let down easy? Hell, Jacob gets TWO chances to turn it around and make up with him?! I guess I shouldn't be too mad, since anyone letting down Garrus at that point
should feel like a jerk, but I mean, the game goes out of it's way to almost make you feel
good about the other two, but has to bean you in the head with a brick for the last one? I mean, why can't we get a make-up option?! I know of a few people who accidentally rejected Garrus because of where they put the rejection dialog (Note to BW: DONT PUT REJECTION OPTION ON THE UPPER RIGHT!).
And Bioware can't sideline Garrus after a romance like that. If they do, trust me, the streets of Edmenton will run red with the blood of innocents
