To be fair to the Tali fans, there's a lot going against her and Shepard as well.

Although, Garrus/Shepard does have both physical AND serious societal barriers to overcome.  Humans and Turians have a pretty common animosity towards each other.

We would have heard he was if that was the case. This is just a matter of Turians coming from the same world/colony. =]

Could be, or it's two minor characters no one cared about defining.  I'd like to think that's why the turian Councilor is such a dick to us. ;)  It's more than just the markings though, they're voiced by the same guy and sound alike.  I sound exactly the same as my mother, for instance.

*cracks knuckles*  Alright then, time to flex my lovely analytical muscles once again!

Re: Garrus, Humans, and that emotion called 'love'
Garrus as a human, hm?  I've seen a few pictures that me would be suitable for a human Garrus...if he were a bishie boy.  But definitely, Garrus as a human would completely ruin the character, and the relationship between him and Shepard.  After all, the species difference is part of the driving force behind it after all.  Also, the poster who talked about "Turians not evolving to be attractive to humans." needs to rethink their logic.  Hasty generalization fallacies are not cool man, and you lose all credibility in your argument with that.  To the person who commented on my Uncanny Valley thread, thank you, though I believe that my logic there was flawed as well, as I migh've been using the Valley incorrectly.  Though it certainly applies to a few humans (I'm looking at you Kaidan/Ashley!)  But it's true, in a world where we are surrounded by humans, sometimes...people get bored.

Now, this may sound odd, or a little squicky, but why do you think zoophiles exist?  Because they're attracted to the lack of humanity in other creatures.  Probably a terrible analogy, but the overall logic is sound.  We like turians (and Garrus) because he is distinctly non-human.  Sure, he's bipedal, has two arms, and some vague humanoid features, but that's about where the similarities end.  We like the fact his legs bend differently, that he's vaguely scaled, that his mouth parts resemble some bird/lizard mix, that his mandibles twitch, etc, etc.  The love of the exotic and unknown is definitely not something new.  One of the jokes among science fiction tropes is, if a humanoid alien male appears, how many girls will line up offering to...*ahem* "service their needs".  It's happened in more than a few books (sometimes with the logical conclusion of human x alien horizontal tango)

Now admittedly, science laughs until it's hyperventilating at the probability that so many different races evolved to be compatible with each other on a sexual level (convergent evolution ftw!)  But a slight stretch in the science is never going to break suspension of disbelief.

One point that keeps coming up, and in fact was used as an argument against interspecies same-sex couples on the old, OLD forum board, was that it was not believable that no one would react to the fact Shepard is dating/shagging/what-have-you with someone not human.  Or that the Normandy crew would have voiced some concern/distate/etc.  This is a point that peeves me to no end.  The galactic community has been around for over a millennium, do people honestly think stigmas like interspecies relationships or homosexuality exist at all?  We clearly see several interspecies couples in ME2.  Even with humans I can see that after that long, there'd be significant cultural changes.  Ascension (the novel) had a badass marine who was gay, and got absolutely no heat for it.

Of course, we humans are likely the only ones in the galactic community who might still possess the same social taboos and stigmas, but that's likely because we've barely been around for a century with all the other races.  One of the things I liked about Kaidan, was his insight into "human nature" and how aliens can be more like us that we think.  They have their deviants and their outliers, just like we do.  But for the most part, they likely don't have many of the same social issues and inhibitions that we humans are so very fond of.  In an interactive medium like this, Bioware presents us with believable and relatable characters, who are as real to us as any actual living person, which is, especially in the realm of video games, a truly impressive achievement.

Hmmm, the colony markings seem similar to the Councilor's? And it's the same voice? Maybe that's why the guy's so pissed at us? We didn't prevent his son's death?

Looks the same to me. It does make sense that we'll find Turians from the same colonys :P

I think you and I are in the same boat. I fell in love with the Beast as a very young girl, he was my ideal. Angry at the world, lacking social graces, but deep down a really wonderful person.

This makes the three of us. I also had a crush on a lot of alien species. Klingons, Krogans, Luxan, Turians, Yautja(predators), Drell. I think that's it. The thing that 99% of these have in common is that they're a warrioresque class. They are honorable soldiers or fighters and for some odd reason controlled rage and violence is hot.

Four of us. One thing that made me dislike the ending of Beaty and the Beast was that... well... goddamn it, I liked the Beast better when he wasn't human! XD

...Yautja <3  And yeah, the Beast was a stud back in the day.  There's some silly chibi comic somewhere where Belle sees him as a human and bops him on the head telling him to turn back. XD

I don't find Garrus or any turian remotely PHYSICALLY attractive.  Maybe in the sense that some cats are prettier than others, but that's in the abstract.  I don't want anything other than the master/slave relationship I have with my Maine ******.  (I'll let you guess which is the master.)

In my first play through, I decided to have my Shep romance Garrus out of her broken heart over Kaiden.  Her best friend picked up the pieces, the guy she saw as a hotheaded kid who lurked around by the MAKO was suddenly much more sure of himself and all grown up.  It wasn't a physical attraction, it was mental and emotional.  (For me, it was THAT VOICE.)  He GOT her the way Kaiden apparently didn't.  Probably going to make ME3 messier than the Normandy's shipwreck since they're supposed to be friends, too... but what can I say, I like drama. ;)

She didn't find Garrus physically attractive, but mentally and emotionally, he is everything she needs.

Nah, the hottest alien is still a certain half-Vulcan especially when played by Zachary Quinto.

 @Riou

I'm surprised to find I disagree with you a little bit this time.

Not entirely true for me.  Garrus's alien-ness is a very very very small part of my attraction to him, in fact for a long time it was a detractor.  Exotic stuff is all well and good, but mostly I love Garrus for his personality (...ok, and his voice, let's not lie), period.  If Garrus's brain were somehow implanted into a human body tomorrow, I wouldn't love or be attracted to him any less. It isn't that so much that I'm bored of humanity and I'm attracted to the alien differences that he has...it's more than I'm attracted to the similarities that he has to a human despite being a different species.
...Does that make sense?  Sorry if I'm being unclear or if I misinterpreted what you were saying.

And that's just me, I don't want to speak for anyone.

I'm pretty much on board with you. I don't find them like... jump their bones hot, but I do find them aesthetically pleasing for an alien race. Definitely one of the better designed ones I've seen in science fiction. It's Garrus' voice, personality, and presence that gets me, and it's always been that way. There's just something about him.

I didn't know anything about Mass Effect when it was originally released, I picked up my copy for the 360 and spent the next 3 days completely enthralled with the lore. The first time I saw Nihlus, I was like, "Holy ****, that is a cool looking alien. I must know what that is!" And then I became fond of Garrus, not in a romantic kind of way (yet), but in more of a "this guy is my ultimate wingman" way. He really is your best friend in the series.

In my family, every relationship they've had has been based off of friendship first, and I see it last. My mom and dad, while divorced for 21 years now, are still the best of friends, he flies out to spend time with my parents every year. My mom and stepdad were friends for years before they got together. My eldest sister and her husband were childhood sweethearts. My older sister and her husband were online friends for a few years before getting involved, and I met my fiance online when I was 12. We're 23 now. In my mind, there's just no better foundation for love, true love, than a solid friendship because with that friendship comes mutual respect, trust, and a certain amount of comfort.

That's what makes the Garrus relationship so natural and real to me. It's not his alien features or the thrill of the unknown, it's the comfort and security of being with your best friend and knowing he won't intentionally hurt you.

Zachary Quinto doesn't do it for me, but I think that's because the cluster**** that is Heroes kind of ruined him for me. He's bad, he's good, he's bad, he's good, he's bad! I can't believe I watched it all the way through, the last 2 seasons have been physically painful to get through. :/

I do like his voice though, and STO has Quinto voice all over that game. I think he'd make a good Turian.

Ah, but I actually like Sylar.  He's clumsily written, but he's supposed to be one of those characters who are ambiguous in their loyalties.  Hell, his "real" name is Gabriel Gray.  Can't get much more symbolic than that.

And yes, I love his voice.

Exactly, my earthborn sole-survivor is having serious issues working for the people who killed her sqaud and experimented on them in the first place (despite Miranda reassuring her they were rogue elements).  And then Kaiden jumps down her throat....  Garrus is there, as she's been there for him.  Their races may have strained relations, and be barely allies, but neither of them care.

I always thought turians were cute, ever since the first time I saw Nihlus. xD One of my Shepards wouldn't have been attracted to Garrus in the first place if he wasn't a turian. She thinks turians are the most awesome thing ever, gets along great with krogan, likes the elcor because their so polite and their speech patterns are amusing, and has to try very hard not to hate batarians (that one in Mordin's recruitment mission made her believe that they're not all bad). As for humans... she's met a lot of humans that she hates, and very few turians that she doesn't like.

The Council, however, has made her regret saving them. >_>; Some of my Shepards wouldn't have cared because they know all about the politics and didn't expect any better, some let the original Council die, and some really wanted to tell them off.

Shepard: *points at the turian councillor* Okay, I put up with this for a while because you're cute, but now I'm angry! D:<

Turian Councillor: You're out of line, Shep--! Wait, what? 0___o;;

Ah, I never watched Heroes.  So I guess that turned out serendipitous. I think he looks better as Spock too, despite the bowlcut.  I think it's because they tamed his eyebrows for the role, hehe (not many would look *more* tame with Vulcan eyebrows...).
