A little late to the party here, so I'll have to backtrack a bit: to the person who asked whether female gamers would mind sharing the Garrus romance with maleSheps, I certainly wouldn't. I think that especially in Garrus' case, gender has very little meaning.

Another point I wanted to make: I love it how the Archangel quest and later the loyalty quest pave way for the romance. It felt very natural for Shepard to begin seeing Garrus in a completely new light during those quests. When Garrus is shot at the end of the Archangel quest, the player can take Shepard's reaction in two ways: seeing a very good friend go down, or seeing someone she didn't realise she cared about so much going down. For me, it was the perfect situation for femShep to notice that maybe there was more to her feelings than just friendship.

Later on, you actually get to have meaningful talks with Garrus about the way he wants to resolve the loyalty quest, and even there, romantic undercurrents can be detected, at least if one wants to see it that way. I love it how ambiguous the writers made those two quests and thus allowed the players to fill in the gaps themselves. Very well done.

...WHO ARE ALL YOU PEOPLE WITH THEMS SNAZZY AVATARS?

Whoa. Caps not intended (yay, Ventrilo hotkey!) but I'm leaving it that way.
Anyway...I thought this was established pages ago - Shepard would totally wear wedding armor. But...you know. I could actually picture her getting secretly excited picking out a dress, but then going with the armor anyway.
Personally, I see her being comfortable with one of those quickie Vegas-type weddings. Or, hell, just one day going up to Joker and saying "Marry us." Which...doesn't make too much sense since he's the pilot, not the captain.
What the hell...what am I going on about...?
Quick! Something more on-topic! Um...an epilogue that actually had a cutscene and not just walls of text would be preferable. I'M LOOKING AT YOU, DRAGON AGE.

Yeah, FemShep would definitely be for the no-hassle wedding. Not like she has any family to invite if you picked two of the three origins, anyway.

I agree completely. There is serious chemistry between them in the reunion scene alone. I think it's a little of both. She obviously cares for him as a close friend, and just doesn't realize yet that it's more. There's just something there, a comfortableness between them that you don't see with any of the other characters, especially not with Garrus and anyone else.

And -definitely- getting into full-fledged romantic feelings in the loyalty quest. The way JH delivers her lines in the shuttle is absolutely perfect.

Popping back in.

I finally got to the romance cutscene and I bawwed, hard. I was very happy that it was romantic, and didn't really give that "friends with benefits" vibe I had going. But I ended up screwing up and having to play half my game again (D'OH, not that I minded) and I started to really pay attention to all the normal interaction Shep and Garrus had. Someone mentioned that this was the meat of the romance, and I must agree.

Garrus's loyalty mission is especially interesting for Paragon Sheps. My main Shep usually leans that way. I like the thought of Garrus and Shepard occasionally being at odds in a romantic situation. Especially if the Shep is Earthborn, like my main. Think about it: Earthborn Shep was raised on the streets, possibly a criminal all her early life. Maybe she's seen what happens when people give up on what's left of the good in them. Maybe all of that just strengthened her resolve not to let go of that part of herself. I like to think that an Earthborn Paragon Shep does what she does for Garrus because she doesn't want to see him end up like that.

And the little conversation on Tuchanka that Garrus and Shepard have on Mordin's loyalty mission stuck out, too. It was the first time I'd heard Shep start talking to the squaddies while just running around (that I can recall) and that kind of... playful-banter-in-a-dangerous-situation is the sort of dynamic I love between Garrus and Shep.

But that's just me... fangirling. Oh man, and fangirling hard, too.

I did laugh that Garrus wore his scouter-thing for an intimate encounter. Is it grafted onto his head? Not that I mind if it is, but still. I chuckled.

Yes, I agree with both of you. I definitely got the same feeling while playing the game. The writers probably didn't intend it that way, but that's alright. It's just more fun to roleplay that way. :)

Garrus? As far as I can tell they're gray with flecks of pale green and blue, but it seems really hard to decipher.

Oh yeah. One of the things I like best about Garrus as an LI is that he doesn't agree with Shepard all the time. How boring is it that all of your LI options are -always- agreeing with you? But on the other side of that coin, you'd never see Garrus doing what Kaidan does in ME2. He trusts Shepard enough to give her the benefit of the doubt, even if he may not agree with what she's doing.

And as for the Tuchanka banter, I just wish we had more of that. :( Just because Garrus is my FemShep's LI now doesn't mean he can't still be her joking war buddy.

Yes, this! It's not a matter of always agreeing, but always having your back. Shepard is Garrus's point man. Of love. At least, that's how I see it.

lol! Agreed. Even while distraught at Garrus' brush with the dark side, I couldn't help but laugh when he headbutted the guy and said something like, 'I didn't shoot him'.

I made an account on this site simply to post in this thread.
I am a Garrus fangirl, obviously. Loved him since ME1; even denied romancing Kaiden and Liara because I wanted him! After discovering he was able to be romanced in ME2 I jumped for joy and now I patiently await the outcome of their blossoming relationship in ME3.

But I must say; after lurking on these forums for the past three/four days; I finally succumbed and had to make an account to post here just so I could say: You guys amuse me to no end. The pictures and videos you post are hilarious. And some of the in-depth posts about the relationship between FemShep and Garrus made me feel a whole lot better after reading it was probably a fling. Believe me; I didn't see their relationship as that at first, but after hearing what so many people said it kinda bummed me out. But man; your guys' posts just regained what I had originally believed. So my thanks!

So please, continue on! I demand more awesome and hilariousness from this thread! And of course more Garrus. But who here doesn't want that? ;D

XD I wish there was a secret I could impart with the wave of a wand. :wizard: But thank you very much for the compliment, that was very sweet.  I can only hope that, aside from Garrus as a squaddie and LI in ME3, we can see more of Jack as a friend.  Or possibly willing to romance FemSheps.  Could be interesting after all the building of trust in ME2.

D’aww, I say it only because it’s true! …but if you ever figure out how to give up secrets to making beautiful PCs with the wave of a wand, pass me some love, ey? <3 I’d love to see more of Jack as a friend and potential LI for Fem!Sheps in Mass Effect 3. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.

I do have a question for most women involved here.

As a gay man and a man who wants Garrus just as much as you, would you be offended if Garrus ever did have an option for male shep as well? Some girls (most) would prefer to have Garrus be a pure ladies man in their minds. If he ever did have an option for us gay men who love him, would it ruin or tarnish what you have with him?

I already gave my answer away when I was reviewing Riou’s wonderful assessments of the romantic relationships in Mass Effect 1 and 2. I, personally, see no problem with Garrus being an option for Dude!Sheps (sorry if the term Dude!Shep is offensive, I’ve just grown accustomed to using it). I am curious about one thing, though, if the gay Garrus fans would indulge me for a minute here. If Garrus were an available romantic option for Dude!Sheps in Mass Effect 3, would you want there to be gender specific dialogue geared towards Dude!Shep, or would you prefer it if he kept the romantic dialogue as gender neutral as possible?

---------

Okay, and now I’m going to attempt to be super smart and intuitive like Riou and fail hard at it. You guys and gals should stick around for lulz.

I was browsing through the internets (cause that’s what cool kids do) and found some people referring to the Garrus romance as a fling and that the way it was initiated was completely unromantic and out of character for Garrus. Is it? Well, this ‘tart thinks not. Let’s take a look see a little e-mail that a certain doctor sends to Commander Shepard after recruiting Garrus (and, coincidentally, before the romance conversation can begin):

Dear Commander Shepard,

I was relieved to hear that you were alive. I was devastated to hear about the destruction of the Normandy, and those people who didn't make it off in time. After you went missing and were presumed dead, I feared I'd never see you or Garrus ever again. You and he did so much to help clean up the Wards when you were hunting for Saren. The galaxy needs more people like you, and I'm glad you're still here to protect those of us who've grown to depend on both of you.

Is Garrus with you again, by any chance? After being so happy to hear of your survival, I wondered if perhaps he might have ended up with you. I left a few messages on his public accounts, but you know how he is about checking his mail, and I don't think the Comm address I had for him works anymore, because he hasn't returned any calls. Always so busy on his grand crusades, his great passions, that he focuses on them to the exclusion of anything or anyone else.

Anyway, if you know where he might be, I would really love to hear from him. Or both of you could come by the next time you're near the Citadel.

Thanks!

Chloe Michel

*thanks to Aris Ravenstar for posting the transcript*

Dr. Michel seems to know Garrus pretty well. I’d say she’s known Garrus far longer than Shepard has (because the scene in Mass Effect implied some kind of standing history between the characters. I mean, Dr. Michel refers to him by first name as opposed to Officer Vakarian. Also: she has his number and Shepard doesn’t? WHAT. *ahem*). Anyway, cutting to the chase, the point of emphasis in her message is in this line:

“Always so busy on his grand crusades, his great passions, that he focuses on them to the exclusion of anything or anyone else.”

Anyone could tell from the first game that Garrus’ passion was to help people in whatever capacity he could. He had some interesting methodologies in achieving that end, but it was clear that righting wrongs was something he cared a lot about. Helping people along the way to righting those wrongs was another thing he seemed willing to do (calling on rough recall powers here: “If there’s anything I can do to help, [take down Saren] anything, just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.”)

That hasn’t changed in Mass Effect 2. When Shepard recruits him, Garrus briefly shows a bit of concern regarding Shepard’s status with Cerberus, but shakes his misgivings off when he realizes that Shepard needs his help to save people (I’m guessing there are a number of other reasons he doesn’t press the issue further, but we’ll keep that to a minimum so as to avoid mucking my failtastic wall of text up further). After that, he’s very focused on doing his part to help Shepard succeed in the mission. Garrus is one of a few squad members that Shepard can talk to concerning the odds of surviving the suicide misson (as far as I know, the only other ones would be Jacob and Miranda to an extent—if I’m wrong, feel free to correct me!). If Garrus can give Shepard an analysis on the squad’s prospects, it shows how involved he is in the process of preparation for the mission.

I think the only way Shepard could get Garrus to think about anything remotely personal is to be as forward with him as possible, but I don’t think the opportunity presented itself appropriately until the “Reach and Flexibility” conversation. Garrus began talking about how Turians prepared for high risk missions through violence, and how one tussle of his in particular went and turned into something else entirely. It helped him and a certain recon scout relieve tension, and to that end, they were sufficiently prepared for their mission.

I like to think Fem!Shep realized that by appealing to his sense of helping her out with this mission by relieving some tension was as great an opportunity as ever to spring a pseudo relationship on him. So she jumped at it. Subtly, at first (and I used “subtly” lightly here: “Sounds like you’re carrying some tension. Maybe I can help you get rid of it.” “I, uh, didn’t think you’d be interested in sparring, Commander.” - - again, focusing on the less personal method of relieving tension), but when that failed, she pulled out all of the obvious stops (“How about we skip straight to the tie-breaker and we test your reach and my flexibility?”).

Garrus didn’t oppose the idea off the bat because he saw it as a way for him to help Fem!Shep out. But as the relationship progresses, it becomes less about “blowing off steam” and more about making it something special and meaningful for the both of them.

…And I think I’ve lost track of what I’m trying to accomplish with this. Anyone want to help a fool sister out? Disagree? Agree? Want to bludgeon the fool with a base ball bat or feed her face with apple pies or should we just poke the crazy girl with a ten foot pole and see if she reacts? XD

EDIT: AUGH. FORMATTING FAIL. *headdesk*
