I'd just like to say that I think that this thread's OP is unrivaled by any other character love thread here on the ME2 forum.

Great job, Eradyn.

Thought I'd just chime in here real quick.
Garrus was a perfectly created character, I always thought he and Tali were the best two characters in ME1 with such well written backgrounds, and always taught the two of them should have had a bigger role in the first game, and am glad to see that they both returned in ME2 as squadmates. Hopefully, both will be in ME3 as squad mates.

Does anyone think, though, that they are making the character to dark? Hopefully, he stays in ME3 and we get to see Shepard save him from his dark spiral.

They're definitely going dark places in the ME trilogy.  That said...You DO have the opportunity to help pull him back out of that dark spiral, or you can allow him to fall into it even more, during his loyalty mission.  Regardless, in spite of the dark atmosphere of the game, Garrus and Tali are both shining lights in a darker universe and definitely make it easier to get through the missions.

But yeah, here's hoping we have further development of their characters in ME3 (as squadmates!) and that we can help pull them back from any brink. :)

WOW you guys, I just loaded my save before the Omega 4 Relay to see what it's like to reject Garrus (I had to knowwwwwww)

And ANY doubt that anyone has ever had that Garrus isn't into this relationship...this video totally proves that he is.  He was so disappointed!:(  He was totally crushed, but trying to play it off like he didn't care...Gah, poor Garrus, I feel awful...

Whew, must keep reminding myself that this doesn't actually happen in my game....

Haha, we went through a "Deny Tali" phase too. I think the devs made them all (except miranda and Jack) very sad moments if you reject them, since it's a very moving and touching scene if you don't. They definitely took their time with the romance scene in this game, unlike ME1's where it didn't FEEL as emotional.
This says something for ME3. You definitely know your ME1 and ME2 LI meet and probably have an argument, would be a good emotional bout.

I don't think he's too dark, just the right amount. At least, if you don't let him take the shot.

I think the best thing about Garrus is he's the sweet best friend wrapped up in a bad boy package. Just when you think those two things couldn't ever fit together, Garrus makes it work!

Woo. Just finished the game, and the G-man survived! Of course, I lost Zaeed, Tali, and Mordin in the process... But, the cost of keeping Garrus alive was worth meeting for the good of the galaxy. There were a couple of moments though where, honest to god, my heart was aflutter when I thought Garrus was about to bite it. Thank goodness though he managed to pull through. Attaboy Garrus!

I worry about this too!  After paragon-influencing him in ME1, I was shocked at how angry he is after joining up with your squad.  I didn't like his vengeful side one bit and was terrified the change was permanent.   Once again, you're able to Paragon him away from a dark path. I just wonder if we're going to have to do it all over again in ME3.  I like to think that Shepard won't always have to be Garrus' moral compass.  Its nice to be able to influence your squad mates, but eventually your words should stick!

Concur. Makes you feel horrible for rejection. A monster, as it were.

No, do feel free to wall-of-text to your heart's content. ^_^ We love discussion here.  I can understand how you felt when you ran into Kaidan on Horizon.  I never romanced any of the ME1 LI's, and I saved Ashley, but she was like a "sister" to me.  So I was pretty crushed and baffled at her reactions on Horizon.  I promptly said "goodbye" and moved on, since it was clear to me that she was too "stuck on stupide" to see the forest for the trees.  I can only imagine how much more crushed someone would be had they invested in a romance with either of those characters.

I think Bioware has done a very good job at making the romances develop according to different player types. At first I intended to stay faithful to Kaidan, but after Horizon I realized that Kaidan and my FemShep's personalities didn't match. What my Shepard needed was a respectful, loyal partner that would stand next to her when the going got though. And this was where Garrus entered the picture. The bond between Shepard and Garrus is clear from the very beginning, and I believe that Bioware very consciously wanted this to develop, regardless of whether one decides to romance him or not. When he's recruited, Shepard and Garrus' dialogue is reveals a long standing and close relationship (I'm thinking of how happily Shepard greets him when s/he realizes Archangel is Garrus, how they joke about Garrus taking a shot at Shepard, and not least, the way Shepard can make Garrus laugh back on Normandy when telling him after his surgery that he always was ugly). The realization that Kaidan wasn't really the man Shepard thought him to be, and that Garrus in fact possessed the properties Shepard looked for in a man, made romancing Garrus a natural next step of the Shepard's character development.

This is also reflected in how the early romance conversations between Shepard and Garrus go. The line in which Shepard says that she needs someone she can trust reflects this very well, not at least because he was a very loyal character in ME1, and at the point of recruitment, he is the only person Shepard knows she can trust.

I think how you outlined the possible ME3 showdown is pretty realistic and I wouldn't be surprised if BW offered such a scenario.  I think we'll ultimately be able to choose to continue our ME2 romances or to go back, but we'll see. :P

Well, I'm a little sceptical towards how many resources they will put into implementing all possible variations of dead and surviving characters, but on the other hand the ending of a trilogy is supposed to be epic, and we have indeed collected a killer team for ME2, so I'm sure they'll come up with something. I would however find it very odd if they choose to ditch Garrus and Tali after 2 games. The only real option I see there is to have them die in the opening of ME3, but that would ****** off a great number of fans.

If BW killed them off after players saved them, there would be blood.  And rachni.  Really, at this point I don't see BW sidelining Garrus OR Tali in ME3.  This is the conclusion of the series and I believe they said the gloves come off in this last chapter.  So...here's hoping they really do pull out all the stops. ^^

Exactly my thoughts too. ME3 is where Bioware really needs to spend their resources on making an epic finale.

Not to get any hopes up or anything, but I do recall a statement some time ago saying something to the effect that BW started work on ME3 before ME2. I would have to do some research to find the source to back that up, but it makes too much sense, doesn't it? Considering how many variables are thrown in thanks to ME2's "suicidal" mission, it's just good planning on their part.

As far as killing off Tali or Garrus (or, at least, in a way in which the player can not prevent it), I'm sure Bioware is smarter than that. Those two characters are inarguably the franchise's most popular companions, love interests or not. Oh wait...that's all the more reason to kill them off, isn't it? What better way to invoke the player's passion and, let's face it, rage. I'd sooner kill off my own Shepard than let either Garrus or Tali die!

Hahaha The Voice.

*agreed*

Also, a quick idea regarding the romance discussion. If you notice at the end just after he touches heads with Shepard, he actually raises his hand and touches her just below her neck. I think it's the first time you've seen him touch your character, and it might be small and subtle, but it definitely means that what's going on there isn't just blowing off steam. He's interested in Shepard for more than just anything pysical. And while he may be able to handle the worst, he's afraid of ruining the one good thing in his life. Thankfully though he seems to take the risk with her. ;D

I think that entire metaphor of blowing off steam was to, on their terms, help Shepard and Garrus make the fact that they're different species and attracted to each other somewhat acceptable. It seems casual at first, but they realize that that's just a front for what's really going on, which is a lot more nerve wracking than a fling. Both of them have been hurt so much, it makes perfect sense they'd find eachother.

Anyway, just a theory!

Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis. This is how I interpreted their romance too, and I hope BioWare develops it even further in ME3. As touching as actions can be, I really hope than at one point Shepard can TELL Garrus that she loves him, and not just as a friend (or deeply cares for him if the writers are too afraid to use the L-word for some silly reason). It's going to be the last in the trilogy, so they shouldn't hold anything back.

As a side note, I was always under the impression that he was reaching up to grab her arm at the end. Not that it really matters either way.

Playing as a maleshep, I have to say it's a real disspointment that you can hardly talk to him in ME2, you have like 3 conversations all up. What little he does say is great though, and I really enjoyed his loyalty mission. :)

I'm playing as femshep now and i'm probably going to romance him, or thane, but only if he talks more.

If Garrus returns in ME3 (which eighter him or Tali should), he has to get much more lines.

Yeah, they'd already started ME3's development towards the end of ME2.  I doubt BW would kill those two off in a manner beyond the player's control.  That's the quickest way to kill things off for ME3 and that's the last thing BW wants, I think.  They want to make their fans happy and make ME3 epic...nothing like killing off a couple of the most popular characters in their roster to kill the mood.

Heheh. Garrus...takes no prisoners and gets the job done. But poor Pallin's gone now. :( Now we have Executor Chellick. :3 Hopefully he'll be forgiving of any Shepards who went and screwed up his case with the illegal weapons mods.
