I honestly think Garrus is going to be a strict NPC next time, since he can die in this game.

I actually hemmed and hawed about this even before we found out he was a squaddie in ME2. I was okay with the idea of him being a non-party member in ME2 if it meant he'd survive until the end. But instead he's a party member and I got a romance.

To be bluntly honest, it feels like a semi-Pyrrhic victory to me.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that Garrus is back and a romance option. But I'm okay with the idea of him not being an active party member in the third game, so long as the conclusion of the romance subplot is just as fulfilling as we hope it to be.

And I've heard we may visit a turian world in ME3, so fingers crossed we get to meet Papa Vakarian there.

(... How did that nickname for his dad originate, anyways?)

2) Bring Garrus back as a squadmate: I'd be heartbroken if he was relegated to being an NPC in ME3, I want him to be by my side when we finally take down the reapers.

Seconded. If Garrus (and Tali too) are relegated to NPCs I honestly think it would devastate my enjoyment of the game (ME3) - not that I couldn't be proved wrong, but it'd be like losing your best friends when they really should be with you and there's no reason for them not to be. They've been with Shepard for two legs of the trilogy already - it's only fitting that they're in for the third as well. Plus, it adds a whole new dimension to the romantic aspect. It's more believable to fall for someone whose with you every step of the way.

No other characters can boast having been with Shepard longer. I want both Tali and Garrus back as the only two party members to stick out the trilogy with Shepard.

I really liked what someone else had theorized, that ME3 would be the whole team back for taking down the reapers. Then you'd get to continue everyone's romances, and it sounds cooler than "look! All new characters, again!".

Thanks for the suggestions, Jellobell, I've incorporated them into the OP. :) If anyone else has any suggestions/wishes, please let me know. I'll gradually refine the list and break it down. :3

I agree, it would be a real disappointment if they went for all new characters for squaddies and then cameo off the older ones/write them out.  I understand it might not make much sense for some characters to return, but it would be really tiresome and disappointing if they went that route again.

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that when you finish a major part of the plot only Miranda or Jacob talks to you afterwards? I always get the impression that they're the "plot" characters and the rest are just addendums. I want the alien characters to play more prominent roles in the main plot of the story, specifically Garrus, since this is his topic.

One example in particular that bothered me: After you complete the mission into the Collector ship and it's discovered that the Illusive Man purposefully mislead you, Shepard announces that she's got to speak to the crew...which apparently consists only of Miranda, Jacob, and Mordin. Where's everybody else? Under the circumstances, everyone should have been present.

That sort of thing makes the Garrus romance feel less relevant then, say, a romance with Jacob or Kaiden. Here we have a game that's based on making choices, and yet only certain characters appear during many of the plot related cut-scenes - the primary love interests you might say. Then you've got a bunch of secondaries that, because they're optional characters, don't carry the same relevance.

Well...there's a suggestion in there somewhere, but I get the feeling that it's probably too much work for BioWare to go to that kind of trouble. You can only do so much.

You make many valid points.  I tried to summarize it in the suggestion section of the OP; please let me know if I got it right or if I was off the mark. :)

ROFL Thank you.

XD

Mordin does a brilliant job outlining things. :3 But the really great thing with Garrus is that he makes for an awesome friend OR love interest either way.  I'm really pleased with how BW handled his character development.

Omg x) don't talk about that how Garrus is better friend than li here :P it could give some wrong ideas to devs for ME3 if they reading this thread xD! Joking... Hey people why Garrus doesn't talk to me after missions, like he is always buisy :s when I get his loyal quest? I will be very gratefull if someone answers me :) I even got that letter from woman which husband was in his squad and died on Omega but couldn't either discuss that with him. *confused*

I got his loyalty mission after completing Horizon and several other loyalty missions for the rest of the crew.

Garrus has a penis, and FemShep has a vagina? Penis go down da hole, as Plucky Duck might say.

But, seriously, Garrus was indeed awesome this time around. The fact that he had such brotastic lines with DudeShep made his character for me. He even jokes that it's good he got scarred, otherwise he'd keep stealing the chicks from you. Great job, Bioware.

@Schneidend: Yeah, BW did great with Garrus and I hope they continue to develop it. I think he makes a great friend or romance, his personality is just very well-done for either path and I hope BW pursues enriching and developing that.

And yeah, hopefully people will stop asking about that. XD I mean...how many clues does BW have to drop that turians have similar-enough equipment to make such a thing doable? From the turian-in-the-urinal scene, turian-asari-quarian relationships, and then the mere fact that a Garrus/Shepard romance exists...well...there are clues here, people. :P

@Xalena: There was a long period of time where Garrus had nothing more to say to me except that he was busy calibrating the batteries. It wasn't until I finished his loyalty mission that we could move forward with conversation.

Garrus' loyalty mission is the 6th to become available, I believe.

Just becuase Garrus can die doesn't mean he won't be a squad member in ME3 , I mean it seems obvious that Ashley/Kaidan will be a squad member in the third game and one of them dies in the first. Bioware even said that the reason they weren't on the squad in ME2 was because they wanted to keep him/her alive for ME3. At least that's what I'm hoping anyway.

That's what I'm hoping as well.  It makes sense that, of course, if they die in ME2 they won't be available for recruitment in ME3, but I really do hope that the possibility of Garrus dying doesn't preclude him from being an equal, fully interactable and recruitable squadmate in ME3.

It does make sense that BW might have saved the ME1 (potential LI) squadmate to ensure there would be at least one returning ME1 squadmate to recruit in ME3 (two if you assume Liara could make a return as a full squadmember).  My only concern is that they would use that as a reason to lessen Garrus' role in ME3.  As you said, however, it could go either way.  I'm hoping BW will go all out with ME3, though, and that none of us will be disappointed. :D

I finished the game and am now doing random side quests I missed. What's this about being able to summon Garrus to your quarters? I looked at the computer next to my private terminal but I can't select it. There is nothing anywhere in my room that says anything about "summoning Garrus" and I know I finished the romance. (Scene before we went to collectors base and everything) I'll be ticked if I missed this because of some dumb bug.

Uh oh...ah...he's not sitting in your quarters already, is he? He'll be on the couch. The intercom is right next to your private terminal in your quarters. Once you summon him, he'll be in there but you can't select the intercom again until you leave your quarters. Also, try talking to him again in the ship's forward batteries and do the whole "I want that too" conversation option to try and kick it off again. If none of that works, you might want to try exiting and restarting the game and try again.

So the romance doesn't start until I complete his loyalty mission, or what?

Because I've been playing the game for a couple of days now, and I'm really enjoying it, but I'm becoming impatient since I played his recruitment mission and my love for him reached levels I... well let's just say I've never liked a fictional character so much. His character development is AMAZING, but you guys know that already. He's so changed, like...

Like that guy you had a crush on in high school, and then years later you see him and he's become a man. And what a man. God, isn't he attractive....

So, can somebody tell me when it starts? And, just in case, if there is anything that may ruin it at any point? (I just have a gift for things like that)

Yeah, you need to complete his loyalty mission before you can proceed. :P His loyalty mission is, if I recall, the 6th to come up. And OMG, Nissun, you're making me want to run back into ME2 RIGHT NOW. He's awesome. :3

Yeah, in order to not ruin your relationship, when you do trigger the romance, don't tell him you just want to be friends (the option remains throughout). The romance trigger is in the conversation where he talks about how turians prepare for high-risk operations. You can't miss it, there's so much innuendo there. XD

During the loyalty mission, don't be afraid of making certain choices; he'll be loyal regardless and you can pursue the romance later, no matter how you handle it. :P

Thanks Eradyn.  I went and talked to him and that triggered it for me.  You're a lifesaver.  It's still sort of wierd that it didn't trigger to begin with though.  Oh well.  I've started a second playthrough where I"ll try to hold out for Thane, but we'll see how well that goes.

Good, glad to hear it worked. Yeah, it seems like the "continue on" option might be a little buggy(?), or at least incomplete.  Heck, no one acknowledges that you're in a relationship (lookin' at you, Garrus) or that you've just finished your Collector Base mission (lookin' at you, everyone else). :P

Thankyou! It's actually very frustrating, because he's just there, saying he's busy, and I'm afraid of playing mission after mission, and things taking me nowhere...

Plus, now I really DO see female Shepard with Garrus. I think i've mentioned it before over here, how I thought a maleShepard and Garrus romance would be more awesome for me. Well, now I don't mind. It may sound stupid, but it's kind of a big deal for me. I don't know why, this time around I actually care a lot for my (female) Shepard. Maybe because her (and I guess his) attitude has changed, or because the dialogues in the game feel very different...

Besides, she's an infiltrator. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing Garrus take cover right next to Shepard, behind the same crate, sniping enemies together.

Yeah, the waiting is killing me. Only two and a half loyalty missions complete so far.

I love it when we're stuck together behind a crate or something, picking off enemies side-by-side. :3 And especially hearing his lines.  ShepxGarrus just work well together, and I think BW did a phenomenal job.  Hale seems to have improved her delivery (if that was possible) for ME2 as well, and the dialogue options just seem more natural.  So when Shep and Garrus talk, it's just like talking to a close friend with similar, relatable experiences, and then that friendship becomes deeper and then something more. <3

Aww, dammit <3

I can't play until monday, I'm missing the fun and I have nothing else to do! Now I have to choose between time on the internet, or time playing (neither the pc or the xbox are mine). It's a tough decission, but I'll be back to post from time to time.

Ouch...well, hopefully you'll be able to snag one or the other sooner rather than later (and at least Monday's only a couple days away).  ^^ Just think of Garrus to pass the time...makes it go quicker. :P
