I have to say I'm a bit alarmed by that YouTube video, though, since Samara is the one doing the biotic shield and it still fails. I thought that Samara was one of the only characters you could pick for that role and be assured of success? Unless maybe she wasn't loyal in that particular playthrough, or something.

I believe that if you get the IFF and don't go through the Relay right away, you are causing characters to die in the final battle.  I don't know if they have any rhyme or reason to who they kill off, or if its just random.

And damn that video was horrible!  Why do we have so much Garrus sadness going around this thread right now?  We need more videos like Afternoon Delight....

Yeah, in Garrus and Tali's case it doesn't really make sense, it's mostly just a game mechanic thing.

I think it makes sense if you think of it, like Shadow Paladin said, as focus instead of loyalty. Both Garrus' revenge and Tali's exile would be pretty distracting. Garrus just can't stand Sidonis getting away with what he did, and Tali's so loyal to the Flotilla, being exiled is just insane in her mind.

Right. The Sidonis thing was pretty much posessing Garrus. It makes sense he wouldn't have a clear mind for the mission with that hanging over his head.

Obviously 'Loyalty' sounded cooler than 'Focus', which sounds like some kind of skill bar. :P

Well, the post-mission report even goes so far as to say "such-and-such is now FOCUSED completely on the mission."

But Loyalty does sound better. And it even feels a little more appropriate in a lot of cases. I did really like ME2's feeling of building a team. There's a scene in Lawrence of Arabia where Lawrence, after not having been in the desert for a long time, is making his return (to lead the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turks.) And he makes a big deal about how THIS time, he's going to get the best fighters in the desert. His British friend asks how much they'll cost. Lawrence replies scornfully, "Some of them will come for money," and then adds, with pride, "But the BEST fighters will come for ME!"

That's what ME2 felt like to me. The best fighters are all coming to fight, and after ME2, they'll all be pretty loyal to Shepard.

My first Shepard is male Paragon Adept.

Second Shepard (where I'm playing now) is female renegade infiltrator. I did the Kaidin romance in ME1 just to see if there was more to his character, but I'm not going to get torn up over dumping him. (That's not very RENEGADE!) It's between Thane and Garrus, and I haven't decided yet...(though I'm clearly loading the dice by posting this here...) I like the comrade-in-arms dynamic with Garrus, but I'm not sold on the romance yet.

Garrus-mancers, make your case!

Hmmm...well now, make a case, hm?  Alright then, since this is a relationship standpoint, and NOT a gameplay standpoint...*cracks knuckles*

Re: Thane Romance
First off, be aware that you're getting into an already tragic relationship, and prepare for much tears and wanting to fix the broken thing.  Thane has remarkable calmness and serenity, because he has accepted his own inevitable death.  On top of that, his dead (murdered) wife and estranged son do add some significant emotional baggage to the mix.  Still, Thane is a remarkably serene person, and is quite the gentleman to all those interested FemSheps, treating you with respect and courtesy like the men of olden days.

Re: Garrus Romance
Poor Garrus.  He's off to a bad start with those scars (though you might consider them a mixed blessing), and the fact you have to wait till after his loyalty mission to even begin flirting with him.  Still Garrus bring something totally different to the field than any of the other LIs.  First, the fact that he's a totally different species, complete with dissimilar biology and anatomy (We STILL don't know what all parts he has >_> ), and the fact his relationship is founded on the basis of trust and loyalty.  He finds Shepard attractive/worth the risk because of the fact it's you, his commanding officer, his one true friend.  Admittedly, he has no experience with humans (He admits to never having considered cross-species intercourse), but he wants to try it with you, because he respects and admires you.  And he desperately wants to have something in his life go the right way for once.

That's about all the analysis I can give at the moment.

Did anyone else freak out when Garrus got hit in the beginning? I thought it was my fault, since I didn't interrupt the gunship repairs, and I was so angry with myself. XD I take those renegade options more often now... just in case.

Thanks for the romance advice!

Leaning towards Garrus at the moment...though if Tali were an option I would go for her, probably. There's something appealing about using her Shepard fangirl-ism blinding her to the fact that RenegadeShep is a terrible person that appeals to me, I dunno why :P

I did. Not as much as when he got hit during the suicide mission, but still...

I wonder how much of a difference leaving someone to guard him makes. There's this one pyro camped around a corner in that level, and having both squadmates to deal with him would be real nice...

I always leave someone with him. However...I have yet to play the game past Veteran difficulty.

I totally did. You could hear my 'NOOOOO!' from several rooms away. And then the blood. And the sputtering. SO HORRIBLE. I'm glad the renegade thing didn't affect it, because I would've been really irritated.

@ComTrav: I think that just affects his lifebar. I left someone with him both times so far.

You and me both. When he took that gut shot as leader on the second team, I was like slow-motion "nooooooooo". But then Shepard smacks his shoulder and all is well.

@Kordras: yeah, first time I saw that, I thought "man, what did I do wrong?" and then storymode took over and he ended up looking even more badass with half a face, so it all worked out.

The poor male Shepards. o_o; That was the first conversation I got right after his loyalty mission, and the only time he said anything before that was right after I recruited him. I'll just have to imagine male Shepard's response, which will probably involve bragging. xD I thought it sounded like Garrus was bragging.

I think Garrus must have asked Mordin about it when he said he was going to do some research. xD And he probably just wanted to make sure Shepard didn't die right before the suicide mission from an allergic reaction. I laughed when he said that he sent the info to Shepard's room though... Doesn't he know that Miranda, and possibly the Illusive Man, monitor these things?

If Garrus dies in my playthrough, I'm just going to reload immediately. D: But if he does, I'll try to remember his last words since I planned on making him second fire team leader. (For some reason, I thought he'd have a better chance of surviving as second team leader rather than first, but I also thought Samara wouldn't have any problems holding the barrier.)

The idea of Garrus going to Mordin strikes me as even more hilarious than the Shepard/Mordin convo. Can you imagine? It would be epic.

I think the only way Garrus can die as a team leader is if he's not loyal, and since I doubt anyone -didn't- do his loyalty mission, that might be why I've never found out what he says.

On a side note, why is it that all of ManShep's LIs get involved in some type of dispute, but none of FemShep's do? I was expecting Jacob's distrust of Thane to come to a head eventually, but it never did.

Yeah, I can imagine that. xD Poor Garrus must have been so awkward. At least Mordin brought up the subject so Shepard didn't have to. I can imagine the conversation between Shepard and the Illusive Man too... and that one just reaches a new level of awkward.

Illusive Man: Shepard, Miranda sent me some videos from your private terminal... and while I question your preference, I still think you're the best hope for humanity. >_>; But is this really what you have to do to be focused on the mission?

That's good to know. :) I was going to finish all the loyalty missions anyway.

Miranda and Jack are the only ones I know of so far that fight. xD Maybe it's so the male Shepards (and Joker) can take pictures.

I wasn't worried when Garrus got shot by the gunship, but that's because I read all of the spoilers already. And my Shepard did use the Renegade interrupt. :D That part was still a surprise.

Garrus: Listen, uh, about.. Well, here's the thing. I need some information about interspecies, uh, relations. And I figured you might know a little more about this than Dr. Chakwas... Besides, she's a human, and a woman. I'd probably never live it down. Look, this is awkward.
Mordin: Say no more. Picking up readings from your hormones already. Flattered, but not interested. Apologies for my attractive skin tone.
Garrus: Right, so... ::pause:: Wait, what? No, that's not it at all. ... I just realized I left my callibrators... Callibrating. ::backsteps out::

I'm sure there's all kinds of cut male bonding content. Like watching the Edmonton Blood Dragons on the big screen tv, playing Starcraft 3 on Normandy's LAN, and talking about girls. ("Dude, Garrus, Kelly Chambers TOTALLY wants to do you!")

I'm sure she has nothing on LEGION for botting. The guy has hundreds of "Geth" programs on his platform....they could all be fishing in Palaven Valley or whatever.
