So after 150hours of playing I finished the game on nightmare at lvl25. Done almost all quests unfinished only mosaics and bottles and similar tedious quests. Killed all dragons and collected all shards.

I play on PC so at first it was a real nightmare getting used to the (stupid?) AI and tactical camera and other half-arsed crap but as I played the game I got used to it and its not that bad once I you learn how to make optimal choices.

People who enjoy hardcore micromanagement, difficult fights with a lot of disadvantages should ignore this thread :)

So here are some tips new players might find useful

1. Party combination

Double SnS+mage+rogue is probably the optimal in my opinion(I cannot say best because people have different taste).

Its optimal because you basically you manage only 2 characters and leave tanks doing their job.

Set AI to follow themselves, preferred Guard generating abilities and tanks are doing fine. My main character is female qunari warrior and I am sure AI does a better job then I do with her, just cant get used to that melee control on keyboard with such settings Bioware gave us.

I tried to compare this combination with 1tank+3others on a lvl 20 fade rift with wraiths (probably the worst one because of so many ranged elemental attackers) and its a night and day difference. Fighting with 2tanks is so much simpler.

Tanks are not low on damage. A party mage should have winter grasps for double shatter combo from shield bashes. And later on I had 2 templars for more buffs and dispells so barriers or guards were just minor issues.

Rogue for lockpicking and some battle crowd control.

I went Main+Cassandra+Varric+Solas and after getting specialization Sera replaced Varric. For some locations and quests its better to pick some more fitting companions for better dialogues and story and so enjoying the game more. Tempest Rogue is the most OP class in the game, I will come back to Sera later.

I also tried Main+Cassandra+Blackwall SnS+Viviene KE and that is kinda retarded imo. Its just zerging everything to the ground and not very fun for me.

Do not miss Varric+Cassandra interaction. Its the gem of this game imo. Varric+Dorian picking on Cassandra is priceless!

2. Get Deft hands fine tools perk and +1potion slot perk as soon as possible.

you can get some more powerful items sooner with expert lockpicking. Recruits also count as points spent in the perk trees!

3. Upgrade your gear and potions at the blacksmith-frequently

Check your materials and schematics and see if you can make anything better. If you have Gather materials missions on war table unlocked use Leliana to get some good materials as she always go for black market and get the best stuff you can get, and they are quite useful. Upgraded potions are very powerful especially tonics and grenades.

4. Defensive attributes are better (constitution, cunning, willpower) than offensive ones in my opinion. For rogues do not completely ignore dexterity and cunning is good for almost all characters(if there is not a better option).

5. Get focus maximum to 300 as soon as possible. Some focus abilities can end the battle in few seconds. The offensive focus abilities are real killers.

6. Check the passive abilities on the skill trees

You have only 8 slots for skills on the bar so its best to get most good passive abilities for your builds. And then focus on gear that support such passive abilities.

7. Powerful masterwork crafting.

this should be from midgame once you start picking Fade touched materials. Here are some abilities that completely make the game easy.

  • +guard on hit. Put this on the Rogue/Mage armor
  • 10% Walking fortress for 3s to 5s - squishies profit mosts from this
  • 10% Hidden blades with 4-5 additional hits - warriors but Archer rogues really rule with this.
  • Chance to cast Horn of Valor on hit - this is very useful and imo best on mage's staff
  • +1%heal on hit

on tanks its like whatever...they don't die easily, if at all unless attacked by a lot of ranged enemies.

with these masterwork slots its kind of overkill and the game becomes really easy.

8. Giants in Emerald Graves give good XP and sellable loot if you want some grinding.

9. Tempest Archer/Sera

This Class is OP and FUN. Fun because they are still squishies and you have to watch out for nasty stuffs around. But Haste flask, stealth, Explosion arrow, Full Draw gives very good combat control. Its divers use of skills on different targets and lot more fun than KE Blade/Fade spam imo :D

With +5Hidden blades masterwork special and flasks this character dominates. There is a bug (or not properly checked skill) with Fire Flask+Thousand cuts focus ability, but its not needed to abuse this at all.

My Sera has 74%crit chance and with maxed Mighty tonic and other buffs she can kill Highland Ravager with 2x Thousand cuts (tried to see how far she can go, forgot to put Thousand cuts ring on so yeah Mark of Death+Thousand cuts can practically oneshot Highland Ravager imo...)

The burst damage output of Thousand Cuts is stupidly high imo. At the Corypheus battle I popped buffs and she killed him with just that one single final push of button...and the game got bugged and I had to reload of course because of....spoilers :D

They will probably nerf both Tempest Archer and KE in the upcoming patch so enjoy while you still can

hope this helps :)

Just be careful not to make the game too easy because it could become not too enjoyable ;)  I almost never use Focus let alone 3 bars. As usual, to each their own.

I don't see any reason to nerf either. Tempest is not broken at all, not counting the bug with Flask of fire and focus. KE is not broken either, just very strong defensively. Just like the Arcane Warrior in DA:O.

Though they could change some of the numbers to focus abilities.. but as I have mnetioned in other posts: if you need focus to win, you are playing wrong.

1. Party combination

Highly depends pm your inquisitor, but in general(on Nightmare with FF on) 1 tank + 1 support mage is the core. Example of my team setups, which has been crushing Nightmare:

- Cassandra Tank, Solas Support Mage, Inquisitor 2h Reaver Varric ranged dps

- Blackwall Tank, Solas Support mage, Inquisitor archer Artificer, Sera Tempest

- Cassandra Tank, Solas Support mage, Inquisitor Dps mage, Varric ranged dps.

The thought behind the setup is:

1 tank is enough. A tank never dies, and holds aggro fine. Build for +% defense and armor.

1 support mage is enough. Keeps barrier up, CCs with WInter's grasp and weakness as a Rift Mage(If Solas). Rarerly dies due to passives in both Spirit and Frost tree.

1 ranged dps: I take Varric in most cases since her is an Artificer. 10% more damage and 5% crit is a huge team buff. Not to mention he is awesome. I only change in Sera if I am a artificer myself, as she becomes a crit-godess towards mid/end game. That ends up with me never having CDs on my abilities (Artificer passive)

Myself: I build as dps. There are no situations where I need to take damage, so I avoid building for damage mitigation.

2. Get Deft hands fine tools perk and +1potion slot perk as soon as possible.

Deft hand is the first serious perk I recommend going for too! However, there is no benefit in getting it too early either. There are no accessible deft hand locks you can't just get back to later. I recommend getting the herb perk(10% chance to get 1-9 more herbs from a gather) at first, then get at least 2, but preferably all 4, conversation unlocking thingymajiggle. It helps for new, exciting conversations, and it means you get more from picking up notes and such! The difference between 50xp per and 150 xp per is pretty huge over the span of the game.

Later I'd also get 4 more potions and the 50% more xp on research. This one adds retrospective, so there is no benefit in getting it early either!

3. Upgrade your gear and potions at the blacksmith-

Indeed. You can get Tier 2 schematics as early as Hinterlands. Crafting some Tier 2 items comes in handy at that point. As soon as you get Skyhold you can get out and get Tier 3 schematics and material.

Also remember Runes! I, for one, never bothered with it during my last playthrough. But the damage added is free damage!

4. Defensive attributes are better (constitution, cunning, willpower) than offensive ones in my opinion.

Not quite. You should check the theorycrafting thread! Lots of goodies there! In general:

For tank - Defense % + armor > everything. Guard is not worth spending time with. You can easily hit a point where you take only 1 damage, as early as Skyhold.

For dps - Generally Attack% > everything. Willpower is also better than the other main stats. For Rogues, though, Cunning/Dexterity(Crit chance/Crit Damage) is worth a lot due to their passives(Stamina back on crit). So that should be noted.

If you get hit as a dps, you don't play very smart. There is not a place in the world where a Rogue, for instance, needs guard on hit.

5. Get focus maximum to 300

Not a bad thing to do, but rather unnecessary. No fight really requires focus to win. though there isn't much else to out perks into, so might as well!

6. Check the passive abilities on the skill trees

This one is important! Some builds work on passives! Take Artificer Archer Rogue, for instance. You build your whole build around 2 passives: Stamina on crit, and 0,5s off cd on crit/ally crit.

Also, the defensive passives in Sword and Shield tree are amazing. Take all of them on the tank!

Just my 2 cents :)

Very interesting thread, thank you !

I'm going to try it, I'm curious to see the result. Just to know, did you have Friendly Fire on or off ? I play with FF on (and I don't want to change that), and I wonder how it works with 2 tanks.

Myself I don't really understand how to play a class until I actually play the class so I just started a bunch of characters learning to use poison etc.

I played with FF off but Friendly Fire is no problem, I tested it, you need to turn off AI for DPS (or turn off some skills) and limit to using AoE skills when its save (maxed guard on tanks and not chaining multiple heavy damage AoEs) and also not putting secondary points to certain skills (like winters chill)

Sera/Varric and Dorian can kill party tanks in matter of seconds :P

I do not like FF in this game because fights consist mostly of 3-4 enemies on average and there is not a real use of AoEs (not that frequency that I would like), I found myself not using those skills and was kinda pissed/bored so I turn off and enjoy the heavy chaining :)

Imo the fights are a lot dumbed down and its been a long time since I played DA:O but I still have the feeling that fights there were certainly more creatively designed.

I'm going to like this thread. I'd like some party tips since I'm playing a rogue-Inquisitor. I doubt Sera will be in the party. I learned from DA2 to concentrate on getting the passive skills since you only have so many quick skill slots. I'm not playing on nightmare or anything like that. Combat is more of an annoyance to me. I just want to get past it, but it can be made enjoyable if it's done right.

Oh, and as a tip:

Your mount is broken(nly good!)!

Mount does not lose health via falling. Jump from as high as you want!

Mount can climb certain mountains. No need to take the long route!

Mount moves fast.

Once I figured out the thing could traverse mountains, things was so much easier. Instead of walking around a mountain for the path, I just walk right on it. My horse doesn't even care!

One thing is for sure, leveling to 25 makes the whole end game very easy. I got to 24, and from 19 on or so, I used like 3 potions on Nightmare. Enemies generally don't level past 19, you have every skill and perk you could possibly want, and access to all the tier 3 gear. It gets a bit boring, really.

Use your party to test builds and specs. They have the same ability sets as the Inquisitor, if you enjoy/don't enjoy how a party member plays, it will probably be the same for your PC.

The easiest (and most FF-proof) composition to play is 1 tank + 1 support mage + 2 ranged (archer and offensive mage). It's not, however, the one that does best in terms of damage, since DW rogues and 2h Reavers probably beat everything else in terms of DPS.

Get to Skyhold fast. Level 8-9. You get access to better gear, more areas, and of course your specialization.

Some abilities trivialize the game, such as the Tempest's Thousand Cuts or the Knight Enchanter's Fade Shield. I would recommend against using them if you want to maintain a challenge.

The best crafting materials (sans dragons) are in Emprise du Lion.

How do you set your party members' behavior?  I was messing around with this last night and none of them were doing what I expected, so maybe I'm just slow.

Go into the Character screen (P on PC) and go the tab named ... Behavior. :)
