So, first of all: FREAKING love Knight Enchanter. I knew this was the specialization I would pick ever since I saw the titles of the specials. Later I find out they're defensive specialists and I knew it was meant to be.

My question is, does anyone else have problems using Spirit Blade? Sometimes I press the hot key for it and my character still just stands there or he runs around the enemy. I made sure that I have mana, it's almost impossible for me to be out of mana though, and it really doesn't have much of a cooldown. This isn't always the case, and I haven't had any real problems in battles because of this. Anyone else have this happen, or is it just me? Haha.

I'll also throw in: What I do for battles is staff attack to get Dorian to throw up a barrier, then I use upgraded Fade step to close the distance/chill enemies. Activate upgraded Fade Cloak for the 1000% spirit damage when fading back in while inside an enemy, and then start spamming Spirit Blade. If the enemies clump I'll also use Immolate. :)

What's the best tree to use Knight Enchanter with anyway?

I figure Ice but I don't want to to buy all the spells there, since some aren't that good.

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but when I was doing some experimenting with my KE, the Storm school stood out as having good synergy with the spec. Lots of automatic damage passives and stuff that rewarded aggression combined with some decent ranged nuke/cc hybrids. The two schools seemed to cover each other's weaknesses without treading on each other's toes.

It's worth remembering that no single school works entirely with the KE - even on my Sith Lord build (Storm KE) I still used frost step too.

The way I look at Knight Enchanter is that the blade is the signature move. It's spammable, so aside from the spells to get to the enemy that's all I use. I do, however, pick out passive abilities from the other trees to enhance it. For example, the passive from the fire tree to not trigger a cooldown after a critical hit. Or the the storm tree's passive to increase damage the lower mana you have, I also enjoy the passive from the spirit tree that you regain mana while in a barrier. It's kind of up to you, because of the passives the other trees offer it can fit in anywhere. If you get into the bottom of the ice tree, Ice Armor passive works well if you use ice spells a lot. Get down the Inferno tree and Chaotic Focus will have great synergy with Fade Shield, but ONLY if you use a lot of fire spells. See what I mean? It has great uses with any tree, I just use skills that improve my melee combat and my aptitude to survive.

Yeah, the "Inquisitor stumbles back and forth for five seconds trying to get ever-so-perfectly positioned relative to the enemy before using Spirit Blade" is definitely making me like the class a lot less than I thought I would. It also seems like there's a three-swing combo that goes with it that's easy to do out of battle but in battle all I ever seem to get with it is one swing with a gigantic recovery - neither rapidly tapping the key it's on nor holding it down seems to do it. Playing on nightmare and between the two problems it always seems to become suicidal trying to use it - the fussy positioning makes it take much longer than it should to get a swing off and you're stuck in place even after you do.

Is there a trick here? My party's all ranged except for the tank who I mostly let the ai handle so this is my first run in with melee abilities (aside from a very brief try out of melee rogue which I remember as having the same issue). Still, it doesn't seem like the ai has an issue where it insists on doing a 360 around my characters before it can find a spot where it's happy to take a swing from so what's the deal here?

PC if it matters.

Only trick I know of is plugging in a controller. I have the same issues trying to use spirit blade with KB&M, both the ridiculous shuffle that makes DAO's shuffle look tame, and the unwillingness of the character to do the combo attack.

With controller, they do the combo just fine, and there's no shuffle, at least outside of tactical mode. They just slash from where they're standing. It does mean you have to run up to them yourself and slash which gives it a very action gamey feel, again, outside of tactical mode. But that's pretty much the same as how the warrior class plays with a controller, I imagine, just using a different button to do your basic attack.

Fire, for Fire Mine and all the passives - Clean Burn and Chaotic Focus in particular. Also, Spirit for anything that increases your barrier strength and dispel.

Fire typically, basically you want more and more damage to power your barrier. More damage = more barrier and thus fire mine is more or less is god.

I'm able to keep my barrier up pretty much indefinitely with just spamming spirit blade and upgraded Fade Cloak. So, if I were anyone playing Knight Enchanter, I would recommend picking any or all elements you like to pair with it. Chaotic Focus in the Inferno tree powers up fire spells by using 50% of your current barrier, but as I said earlier, it only works with fire spells, which is perfect, IF you use mainly fire spells. I chose immolate because it does the same 300% weapon damage as flashfire, but on a shorter cooldown and less mana. I keep that spell on my bar for enemies weak to fire, and I use Fade Step for enemies weak to ice. So, just pick a tree you like for whatever reason and go to town.

Okay, tried it with a controller and... yeah, it works perfectly. No shuffle when attacking and can hit more than once at a time. So seriously, what the hell?

Unfortunately I'm not really wanting to play through the rest of the game with a controller, I'm kind of feeling like I seriously gimped myself by taking KE if the move doesn't work, and I don't have a save prior to taking the class.

Seriously peeved here.

I don't think I've ever had that problem. The only little thing I don't like about Spirit Blade is the fact that it takes a very long time to recover from one strike. It also can't be cancelled into other spells, it must finish the animation before you can cast another spell. Beside those minor grips the skill itself is absolutely wonderful.

I find that the Fire tree has the best synergy with the Knight Enchanter class. I forget the name... I think it's Flash Point, basically that passive goes hand in hand with Knight Enchanter since it reduces the cool down of all your spells by 1 second when you cast a spell. So you can basically have a constant barrier on your whole party. Besides the Fire tree I find that the Spirit tree also goes extremely well with Knight Enchanter. Specifically the passive skill that increases your barrier by 50% which is insanely helpful when playing on Nightmare difficulty.

I knew Knight Enchanter was going to be my first class when I saw it because the class is tied to the Arcane Warrior class from Origins. Battlemage for life!
