So, I did Sera's first personal quest. The one where you get ambushed and meet up with that stuck up, snooty noble. I elected to have her kill him (since that is the best "murder knife" scene in the history of the murder knife).

When we get back, we're discussing it. My INTENTION was to say something like, "That worked out well, and we're cool and all, but try to be more careful next time." Maybe she'll be a bit unhappy, and that's okay. I don't mind my companions disapproving when I'm roleplaying. It's natural.

So I see a dialogue option that reads something like, "Don't let this happen again". It seemed the most reasonable thing ... but ...

My Inquisitor proceeded to completely ream her out for what felt like minutes. Angry, rude yelling and ranting. There was no option to change course of the dialogue. The best I could do was basically say, "Okay, you can stay. But I'm watching you." By the end of that train wreck, "Sera Greatly Disapproves".

I understand why we have paraphrasing on the dialogue, but I feel like the "Tone wheel" would have been appropriate here, and could have prevented this problem. If there had been the red angry fist next to that option, I would have known what was about to happen.

I hope this is a bug, and that wheel was supposed to have tone icons. If not, can we put in a request to have tone icons added to that specific dialogue branch? Normally I have no trouble with associating the paraphrase with the dialogue, but this one was WAY out of character.

Actually, you can just say "Okay, I'm dropping it" and then the Inquisitor stops reaming her out, apologises and says he/she would like to be Sera's friend. Then Sera likes you almost as much as if you'd agreed with her from the beginning.

I never saw that option. Is it always available, or is there some criteria for it?

That option only comes up if you already have a reasonably high approval with her already.

Yes, some options don't indicate what will happen very well. I save before interacting with anyone as a result. It does make for a hit or miss role playing experience. I'm not sure on the alternative. Some responses go on for paragraphs, so listing out everything won't fly. I like the "tooltip" text they give you for major decisions (e.g., This choice will cause X to die."). Perhaps three or so words on the choice wheel, but a more descriptive comment above.

As for Sera... she really needs to be lambasted. Frequently. :)

Ha. I got the same option but I kind of knew where this was going. Because I was trying to talk to that guy and Sera got all crazy and killed him in a most maniacal disturbing way. That didn't sit well with my current Inquisitor, so they had a very noisy argument. However, they still ended up being friends so you didn't screw the whole relationship over.

However... hmmm... didn't they say in one of the early Alpha videos that we'll have an extended version of each choice so that we're sure we know what we're picking?..

The fact that there are tone icons, but they’re horribly inconsistently used, is a big problem.

the tone icons dont coorespond to the statement most of the time, adding to the pointlessness!

Agreed, not to mention if the wheel says "Are you alright?" I'd expect the Inquisitor to actually say the words "Are you alright?".

I don't remember the exact wording but I was talking with Dorian, and she had this whole little speech, and I remember being completely flummoxed.

There should be an indication if it varies too much from the paraphrasing. Like italics. "Inquire about well-being" or something of the sort.

I don't even like Sera and I was upset with her but I was trying to pick the diplomatic option by saying "don't let this happen again"...and I proceeded to tear into her. So now she hates me to the bottom of the hate pits and since we usually agree on so little, I doubt things will go well from here. I too wish that the short lines we can pick, related much more closely to what the character actually says when you pick a line.

And this is why I hate conversation wheels... They're almost never done well imo.

Especially if the wheel says like, "I agree", or something short like that, and then the character gives a whole damn dramatic speech.

At this point they have the functionality in place - with the explanation box above decision wheels - to just spell out your line or at least expand a bit more on what you're going to say. I really hope they rethink their "design" choice not to have this box for all the other wheels. I recall David Gaider saying it was a stylistic choice, but if interferes with role-playing then style should take a second seat.

It's possible there are design issues with doing the above, but if not I hope they consider it. The dialogue wheel needs to stay because it's an impressively elegant way to present you with many different dialogue options that are all very easy to select. But I need a bit more info.

I ran into a couple of similar instances myself, where I had wished there was a little pop-up telling me what exactly my choice was going to entail.  Thankfully there were very few times my Inquisitor ended up saying something I didn't want them to say.  Only time that sticks out was when I was talking to Blackwall in Val Rouyoux; I thought I picked a neutral answer, but my Inquisitor said something along the lines of how he deserved to have died all those years ago.  :\

Ha. I got the same option but I kind of knew where this was going. Because I was trying to talk to that guy and Sera got all crazy and killed him in a most maniacal disturbing way. Yeah, between Sera pulling her bow on me earlier; and how she flipped out and murdered the guy while my Inquisitor was asking questions - I kind of feel like the whole chewing her out was well deserved.  (For the record, I was going to kill him anyway.  Something tells me though, even if I had the option to tell Sera that, she still would've been pissed at me)  Only reason I kept her around after that was because my Inquisitor felt she needed all the help she could get against Cory.

Damn, I hate her.  Brilliant and well written character.  But holy crap, her and my Dalish Inquisitor did not get along *at all*.  Really wanted an option to just grab that bow from her and snap it in half when she pulled it on me.  XD

The three options (when you don't get emotion icons) are always NIce, Funny, Aggressive; in that order from top to bottom. Aggressive is not always angry per se, nor is it always antagonistic to the person you're conversing with.

This happened to me as well. It sort of kills the enthusiasm for the game a bit when this shite happens to you.

The aggressive tone was at the top. Have you even play through this cutscene?

Actually it's Noble, Clever and Direct. Apparently Noble is not always nice. And I can tell you Clever is not always funny.

For me it was bottom left. Bizarre.

Oh my god. Choosing "I don't know what to say" should not lead to my inquisitor cursing! I mean, it's fine for some inquisitors, but my Lady Trevelyan is not vulgar.

Either she should be saying "I don't know what to say" or staying silent.

Well yes, there’s also the musical dialogue options minigame.
