How do you take down hurlock alphas effectively?

How do I deal with hurlock alphas without getting steamrolled and depleting all 12 of my heal potions?

As a melee rogue, I'm not very effective against them. I've tried every possible group setup, but the result is usually the same:

  • Melee companions get gobsmacked by his whirlwind and die.
  • Ranged companions run into his melee to get gobsmacked and die, instead of shooting him from afar, like I told them to.

I can't even assign a tank to deal with him, because as soon as I start attacking the adds, the tank leaves the hurlock to assist me.

How am I supposed to deal with them?

Are you in Valammar? What is your team-set up, what is your level, and what is your enemy level?

I'm in Valeska's watch (Emprise du Lion), but the same thing happened in Valammar.

Tank: Cassandra (templar, vanguard, weapon and shield)

Ranged dps: Sera

Ranged support: vivienne

My level: 19

Enemy: 18

Focus everybody on Hurlock Alpha, except for a male rogue, let him deal with some other enemies.

Take control of tank, taunt him, pull him away from ranged party members.

Use Shield Wall to block his attacks. When you run out of stamina - put barrier on tank.

You can speed up taking down his guard with Shield Bash from tank or Vivienne's Spirit Blade.

Or just use Jar of Bees on him. Bees are the most deadly creatures in Thedas. They will deal huge damage over time (with a bonus to guard I believe) and make him panicked for most of the duration.

Can't help you with your melee Rogue as i've never played one.

Sounds like you have your parties tactics set up wrongly.

Your tank should be set to follow himself and if you set your ranged up to follow themselves they won't run in to melee range, as much, however I usually like to have them the follow the tank though but i use tac cam a lot so don't have heaps of issues.

Shield bash is very effective againts them and all guard bonus items pretty much, also bees! I am playing as an archer artificer with Cass/Solas/Dorian on nightmare with ff on. I just let Cass tank and everyone else shooting from afar. I didn't have any problems that way. Kill everything else around before focusing him though.

Hmm I know which fight it is. Can't really give much advice other than use focus and focus fire him. On nightmare mode my team just zerged him down.

Thanks for the useful tip on the follow setting. At least Cassandra has stopped disengaging everytime I attack stuff.

Still can't seem to take him on in melee, though. Have to experiment some more, I guess. This enemy is hard.

Hurlock Alpha is a mauler. And as a mauler he got 3 big attacks:

1) He attacks all around himself, generating full guard.

2) He does a combo of 4-5(?) attacks, which arcs behind him as well(Watch out!)

3) He charges and slams(Ruuuun!) * only happens if his target is out of melee range.

he can be frozen when: A) Not using any of the 3 abilities and B) When guard is down. Rememberr that!

Here is what you should do as a DW rogue:

- When he is attacking, back off. Stealth, then twin fang/Deathblow him. *Note, deathblow knocks him down when under 50%. Probably the only knockdown that works on a mauler!! Use this to your advantage. Once he is at 50% and got no guard, you have won the fight pretty much.

- When he gets guard, run away and let your warrior take it off. The tank should have the leftmost active ability in SnB tree, with upgrade, that deals massive damage to guard. You, as a rogue, are useless on guard.

- When he attacks all around him get everybody to back off.

- When he attacks with his combo, wait for it to finish. He can hit you when you are behind. At best get a Twin Fangs or Deathblow off and back off.

- In case you die, just find out which party member he targets and take control. Run, and jump right as he hits. You will avoid the damage. Let the ranged take him out as he chases after you. He will not generate guard when this happens.

* The tactic should be to send your tank to the mauler, then take out the adds. As a DW rogue you should be able to instantøy take out an archer. Then systematically take out the prioritized targets( Archers > Mages >>>>> Warriors w/o shield > warriors with shield > maulers

Set your tank to Follow - him/herself. And if s/he strays, use the quick command (Y on keyboard) on get him/her back on the mauler. Make sure nobody but the tank is near the mauler, as his AoE can get ugly.

Go to Hissing Wastes and buy tier 3 armor or go to still ruins in Western Approach and hope/farm for tier 3 armor.

Craft Better armor with T3 materials.

Equip new armor (this part is important).

Take 1 damage from the Alpha's attack.

Kill Alpha at your leisure.
