Anyone found a way to make this spec fun? I mean it's fun at first... until you realise your immortality. I had to change from hard to nightmare because of it.. and I wanted to go nightmare on my 2nd playthrough.

Don't get me wrong, I love min / maxing but up to a point... at this point it's just ridiculous and takes away all the fun.

Just the constant barrier and tons of fire damage feels bad.

Fade Shield is the most broken talent in the history of broken talents, just don't take it and the class is fine. Without it, it plays more like a rogue. A skirmisher where you haveto be careful and think of when you can or should be in melee and work together with your frontline, supporting them with alot of barriers thanks to flashpoint procs and cooldown reductions from the fire tree.

Also fully capable of doing ranged damage and support just like you usedto before you picked the spec when melee is just too risky.

Personally i use Static Cage,Fire Mine,Energy Barage, Fade Cloak, Fade Step, Immolate, Barrier and ofc Spirit Blade. As my party i use Blackwall, Iron Bull and either Solas or one of the rogues(ussually Varic). Solas+Iron Bull+You is a pretty crazy combo for AoE damage.

In contrast to the other poster, my KE build just ignores the existence of Spirit Blade and Fade Cloak. In the KE tree, basically just took the left side, and never mapped Spirit Blade.

I think the basic build(in no particular order) is something like Immolate+, Flashpoint, Pyromancer, Fire Mine+, Chaotic Focus, Fade Step+, Barrier+, Peaceful Aura, Dispel, Rejuv Barrier, Guardian Spirit, Energy Barrage+*, Conductive Current, Static Charge, Lightning Bolt+*, Gathering Storm, Spirit Blade, Combat Clarity, Fade Shield, Knight-Protector, Disruption Field+. (*: + is optional, probably pick one not all) If you get some extra points, pick up Winter's Grasp (situational replacement for Lightning Bolt) and the freeze burst thing.

I have mapped; Fire Mine, Immolate, Barrier, Fade Step, Dispel, Lightning Bolt, Disruption Field, Mark of the Rift. The basic idea is to LB\DF to do some CC, deal out damage with fire mines and immolate while bouncing around with fade step. You don't do enough constant damage (no spirit blade) to have permanent invincible-barrier, but it blows up to full pretty frequently without needing to cast it so that you can burn it off for extra damage. Doesn't feel as stupidly broken compared to melee-based KE, imo, and is way more fun (and more active).

I map mark of the rift instead of resurgence, because with a barrier like that you're never going to use your focus ability because battles never get to that point. So being able to use mark of the rift when you feel like doing a lot of damage makes it a bit more fun.

It is natural to change from Hard to Nightmare at some point mid to late game. I did the same in my first playthrough as a Tempest Rogue. It thought it was an average-ish class at first but after I discovered that it is more broken than the KE itself.
Now I am playing as a Rift Mage on NM and although I am happy, I wish there were something above NM (not including FF), because it is fairly easy at late game. I don't even use a Tank anymore.
As for KE, I can imagine it being a one-dimensional class that some people choose to have an easy time. And later they find out that is not way they really wanted.
If you want to have fun once again with a real mage, I guess you should spec out of it and invest into the Fire/Ice/Lighting trees. I can't imagine effective hybrid builds. The playstyle benefits heavily going full melee, casting is secondary regardless. But of course we all await for a patch that changes it.

Just beacuse they aren't the most effective does not mean they aren't effective. Picking Fade Shield and sitting in melee spamming Spirit Blade until your finger falls off sure as hell is the most efficient since it makes you immortal with no effort, but the abilities besides Fade Shield are good on their own.

Unless you have a compulsion to play the most optimal min/max munchkin build ever regardless of your own playstyle in a game that dosen't really requie it there's a fun jack of all trades class there.

+1.

The thing with min-maxed op builds is that they tend to lend themselves well to hybrid builds which would otherwise be not an option.

if you don't think it is fun then don't take it?

This. I think charging into battle with fade step and blowing things up is pretty fun. If you ignore the bread and butter abilities from KE, then I'm not really sure what's left or what the point of playing it would be. If you want a pure caster you'd be better off disregarding KE entirely.

Spirit Blade alone is never enough to keep my barriers rolling, and Fade Shield usually isn't either unless I'm in the fray with a few enemies. Things like giants take a bit more timing and dodging or they wipe barrier out, but I'm playing on nightmare and have no added melee defense.
