Got a response! c:

So...

If you choose to use the Well of Sorrows and you speak with Solas in Skyhold after, he claims to have begged you(/warned you) not to drink. The thing is, he never once said anything remotely negative about the Inquisitor drinking from the Well. He refused to touch it himself and he said he didn't trust Morrigan, but when it came to the Inquisitor, there wasn't a single comment.

Has anyone had him actually say something about it at the Well? It's really weird to me, because I could tell that Cassandra and Cole were concerned about it, but I honestly didn't know how Solas felt about the Inquisitor touching the thing until he got angry about it at Skyhold in my "alternate universe" save. All he says is this when you ask for the companions' opinions: "She is right about only one thing: we should take the power which lies in that well." That... doesn't sound like begging the Inquisitor not to drink to me. In fact, with his complete refusal to do it himself and his distrust of Morrigan, it almost makes it seem like the Inquisitor using it would be his preferred outcome, which is clearly not the case (shown both by the "Solas Disapproves" message and his reaction after the fact).

Was he supposed to say something else if the Inquisitor wanted to use the Well? It really seems like he should have based on the Skyhold conversation, but it seems strange that something like that could happen. And if he isn't supposed to say something else, then why is he accusing my Inquisitor of not listening to something he never said?

(I hope this is the right place for this thread! This has been bothering me (for some reason) since I finished the game and decided to see what would happen with the Well if I chose the other option; I've spoken to a few other people that have also been confused about it and thought it might be good to have a thread.)

I also created a post about this at the EA Answer HQ; it's here if you want to see it/click "me too."

Seems like a mistake in the game, because he definitely didn't beg me. In fact it seemed like I was being pushed to drink it to keep Morrigan from doing hat.

I wondered this as well when I talked to him after the quest. I was like, wait, when did he even *imply* that my Inquisitor shouldn't drink from the well? I thought he didn't want Morrigan to drink because he didn't know her motivations, but he said nothing about the Inquisitor.

Hmmm...one more reason to hold off on doing the Well of Sorrows mission until the last possible moment.  Hopefully a dev can respond if this is in fact a bug.

I wondered about this as well. Maybe someone can tweet Patrick Weekes about it?

Could always tweet Weekes or one of the quest developers about it.

Yes, that would probably be the fastest way to get an answer, I guess... Can private Twitter accounts tweet at people (and have them still see it)? I'd be willing to make an attempt, but my account is private and I don't really want to make it public if I don't have to.

I tweeted the question to Patrick Weekes, but I don't know how many tweets he gets directed at him/how busy he is right now, so who knows what will end up happening with that. Hopefully someone either sees the tweet or this thread and responds, I guess!

Same.  I initially drank from it because it seemed like he hated the idea of Morrigan drinking from it, and then he disapproves.  The whole scene was confusing for me.  He certainly didn't beg me not to.  I feel like it was something that was supposed to trigger if you are in a relationship with him, but fails to.  I'll have to check back to see if anyone confirms it! ^_^

Maybe someone who's been able to crack the game files could look and see if there's any missing dialogue for Solas regarding that part of the quest? I know some people have been able to do that already.

I haven't done that quest yet, but it sound like there is supposed to be some kind of conversation triggering that isn't working. Otherwise, what is he responding to? I had the same thing happen with the quest involving Queen Celene. When I went to talk to him at Skyhold after that quest, I got some dialogue options that were related to outcomes that didn't happen for me.

Spoiler
This game obviously has a lot of bugs to still be worked out related to conversations and quests.

Yeah, it really seemed like Solas wanted you to drink from the well! He stated that its power should be used, and obviously he didn't like Morrigan doing it so my Lavellan took it upon herself to drink from the well.... only to be yelled at by him when they got back to Skyhold. It is REALLY confusing and I just sorta rolled with it?

Yeah, he didn't really say anything about the Inquisitor drinking from the Well, but the quest up to that point has been heavily hinting on "the Price" on using it. Like warning about "the Price" in every. single. cutscene. So I guess the constant reminder of the unknowable unknown consequence was kind of foreboding?

Between this, my Lavellan not knowing her Elven Gods, and Cassandra telling me to not drink it then approving when I did... I was pretty confused for most of this quest personally.

I was very confused as well, he protests to both a romanced and un-romanced inquisitor. (instead of begged he says warned)

I didn't expect the Well to be honest (but then I was playing the quest at 3 am in the morning so...) I had no idea what the heck was going on....

if DAO Awakening is any sort of hint, dont expect anything story or side quest related to be patched, especially since the pc community wont stop setting things on fire till they get better controls

I had morrigan drink from the well, later when I talked to Solas he asked me what I would do with the power. Also not to let anyone have it, I wish there was an option to say: but I did not drink from it friend, you were there with me! Lol.

Oh, that wasn't a problem at all. I knew it was potentially dangerous. My issue is that I honestly had no idea what Solas wanted the Inquisitor to do until I got the disapproval message and he got angry with the Inquisitor back at Skyhold. It's weird.

Between this, my Lavellan not knowing her Elven Gods, and Cassandra telling me to not drink it then approving when I did... I was pretty confused for most of this quest personally.

Yes, wasn't that bizarre? "Do you think this Mythal could be real?" Lavellan, you have her vallaslin on your face (as far as I can tell, anyway, though it's not like we have any idea for sure). I certainly hope you think she's real as well and didn't pick that because you think trees are neat or something. It was especially weird because there were some times in the Temple where Lavellan could talk about what her clan thought/did, but then there were other times where she acted clueless.

I was very confused as well, he protests to both a romanced and un-romanced inquisitor. (instead of begged he says warned)

Oh, good to know, thank you! I wasn't sure if there was a difference or not; I've only tried both options with my Inquisitor that was in a relationship with him. c:

I thought that was weird as well... I thought my game had glitched the first time around because my Inquisitor hadn't even wanted to touch the thing and here Solas was, asking her what she'd do with the power. And then I decided to try the other option and he got mad at her for taking it because he'd supposedly told her not to, before having the exact same conversation about what she'd do with the power of the Well. Very strange.

I think what bothers me the most about Lavellan being utterly clueless about thier own bloody gods is that if you are a mage he/she is First. IT IS THEIR JOB TO KNOW THIS BRUH.

*ahem* I think that when he asks what you plan to do with power of the well even if you didn't drink from it is possibly due to the fact that Morrigan is your arcane advisor, he could be thinking she would stay with the inquisition for a while under the Inquisitors command or she would share as much knowledge with the inquisitor as she can before she splits. I don't know, I haven't finished my play through with her drinking from the well.... but no matter how you look at it that last chat feels bugged. Then again the game is overwhelmed with bugs. *cry*

Also is it just me or does the glowy watery (mythal?) spirit that emerged from the well look like your inquisitor regardless of whether you had them drink from it or not? Maybe I'm just using the same hairstyle too much?  I'm too far from the end with my Trevelyan to test this myself and curiosity is killing me.

Here's a question...Did anyone ask for opinions with Solas in the party? I did in my first playthru but forgot what he said about it. But yes I didn't think he'd have a problem with my Levallan drinking from the well but he didn't yell at me at Skyhold. He was not happy but he didn't really yell at me :/
