So... in my first playthrough I realised Varric with his xbow could only do 110 DPS whereas Sera with a custom-made bow did over 200...

Did I miss an upgrade somewhere? I do remember doing the mission on the war room that supposedly upgrades his xbow but at endgame, it's rather weak.

If you miss something, I missed it too.

In my case the best I could do was 151 DPS on Bianca.

Sera simply outclasses him lategame when it comes to damage per second stat.

one of the shop sells Bianca Arms VI once you reach lvl20 If I am not mistaken or you can get that from the late story area I think, dont really remember since Sera is so much better in terms of gameplay and damage output.

Edit: Lady Shopkeeper in Skyhold seels Bianca Arms. I bough all lvl4,5,6 from her and I think its based on the main character level.

I have been trying to find a damn T3 arm schematic for Bianca, his dmg is really falling behind. On the plus side I don't really need it but it would be nice if his DPS wasn't so damn low. I got a normal T2 Schematic I... think. Probably need to re-make em with T3 materials for now till I get lucky and find a T3 arms since I dunno where they would be sold.

So its all in the upgrades, looks like I'll have to keep a lookout. Sera's cool but on my 2nd playthrough I feel like dragging Varric along.

Thanks guys!

The real problem with Varric isn't the DPS on Bianca but rather that Artificier is an awful spec for an archer.

I ditched Varric a long time ago ... I like his character, but his weapon is lacking.

Two mages, DW rogue and Blackwall is all I need.

That isn't true but you do need to set up a party to take advantage of it.

I should maybe have said Artificier is an awful spec for an archer with friendly fire turned on.

Most things in the game are awful with friendly fire on. I don't think that can ever be a valid point, since friendly fire is not properly implemented or valid in the first place.

Well, by the end of my game Biana was around 170 dps for me and the rune wasn't the most powerful one. However... it might be that I'm imagining things, but isn't Varric shooting faster than Sera? Anyway, he was a valid member of my party and not only because of the dialogues. On normal, he can take out dragons just fine.

You can stack more stats onto Bianca than a regular bow. However, the biggest problem is that you can't give Bianca a mastercraft effect. Archers are already limited to only 2 mastercraft slots, yet Varric is limited to a single mastercraft slot. It's pretty sad.

It's a shame, Varric was a beast in DA2, he could practically turn Bianca into a damn machine gun, lol.

yeah, I hope they buff Bianca in a patch or something. in DA2 it scaled with his level and was great, but doesn't seem to scale as well in this game.

It's not about his traps, it's about the buffs. If you have a party that crits a bit, he fires off his abilities non stop and gives the party some boosts.

Yeah you're definitely missing something. Bianca was at 168 DPS with a crafted arms when I happened on the Bianca Arms IV which brought it up to 188. Still waaaaaaay behind the DPS that Cole's daggers were doing- I'm just having a hard time keeping a rogue in my party; the archers do really unimpressive damage and for a ranged fighter you're almost just better off bringing a mage (for barrier), whereas the melee rogue does good damage but is squishy as heck- I find its just better to bring Iron Bull, as he's way tankier and can deal out good damage if specced right and has a good weapon.

Bianca Arms 4?! The balls you get that? I'm 19 and still haven't seen Bianca arms 3 yet, let alone a 4 I didn't even dream existed since T3 is the highest schematic. This games been holding out on me.

Also, Bows are behind dagger DPS almost 2:1. Base dmg is around the same, but they just attack a hell of a lot faster which results in a much higher base sustained DPS. This is made up for with bows on the grounds your at a distance and don't need to ever 'stop attacking' due to melee going crazy on you. Melee rogues have a tendency to have to reset, reposition and all that jazz. Still straight dmg output at a base daggers win out, and you'd have to attack half as often with a dagger to match up with a bow so... still kinda in the daggers favor on that one.

That Full Draw at full HP dmg though, so sexeh... and singular, since you can't repeat it on the same enemy heh.

Are you talking about dps in game play or on paper?

Archers do insane damage, depending on how they and the party are built and they don't waste as much time out of the fight as a Melee, chugging pots or laying there dead. The dead do zero dps.

If you think Archers do "unimpressive damage" you are building them wrong.

Only time I've ever seen Archer's do impressive damage is when using thousand cuts... everything else is pretty sad compared to a mage, 2h warrior or DW rogue.

I completely disagree but what you aren't taking into account is when your 2H warrior and Melee rogue are running to their target, the Archer is attacking. While your squishy melee rogue is laying dead, he's doing no dps. When that enemy that your melee just ran all the way over to, jumps 20 feet away and he has to run accross to it again, the Archer is doing damage.

That's why i asked if he is talking about theoretical damage, or real in game damage.

Have you seen an Assassin Archer play? No focus ability even used. Single target a Mage or 2H doesn't even come close.

I never saw a mage/rogue/2h warrior doing 10k damage with one normal action and my companions all have level 24 items. Archer can do this all the time with the right setup and crafted/found gear. And i mean normal health damage and not buffed barrier or block damage.
