I've decided to settle on my main character (a mage), Blackwall (sword and board), Sera (ranged skills only so far), and Iron Bull (for hilarious commentary and, of course, 2-handed weapons). I'm interested to see what combinations and builds other people are using. What works well for you?
Who is your "dream team"?

Why can't you? You could respec Bull as a tank or 2h tank hybrid.
For me it's always:
Cassandra (the tank of tanks)
Sera (insane DPS)
Dorian (AOE dps and crowd control)
Me (Rogue that brings the pain and takes out key targets with speed)

I didn't think about it like that, heh. I was just thinking of what people actually use. Though now that you mention it, maybe list what you "wish" you could use versus what you actually use would be a better way to put it.
If you haven't yet, try teaming up Iron Bull and Sera - their back and forth dialogue is hilarious.

Myself as a Rift Mage, Blackwall, Varric/Cole, and then Dorian usually kills anything in sight.
Sometimes I bring Solas instead of Dorian for EXTRA Stonefists, which can get crazy.

I use
Sera
Iron Bull
Cassandra
me Knight Enchanter
almost all the time.
If I'm doing a mission for a Companion I adjust accordingly.
Sera is fun with anyone.

I change a lot depending on the nature of the zone or the quests. Blackwall will accompany me when darkspawn are involved. Dorian followed suit once I knew I could trust him when fighting Venatori.
For a long time, Cassandra and Varric were staples of my team. Eventually I gave Varric a well-deserved and much-needed break. Cassandra and Blackwall alternate on point. Vivienne, Solas and Dorian also vary based on what is involved. Though I very sadly missed some key moments with Solas. Iron Bull comes along whenever we're hunting high dragons. I do not care much for Sera or Cole, though.

I think your question hinges on what difficulty you play on. I'd love to take certain characters all the time, but on Nightmare, I find I have to be pretty picky. I mostly take Cass, Varrick, and Solas (I play as a mage). But I do swap in other ones for basic exploration.

Cole + Solas are likely to be part of my dream team in all playthroughs. I just can't leave those guys behind and a well equipped aoe dagger'd Cole just plain kicks the crap out of everything.
This first time around its been:
Mage (thunder/shield/necro) inquis.
Solas (ice/shield)
Cole (dual aoe daggers)
Cass (the "tank")
This works really well for me. Cass keeps their attention while the rest of us freeze/thunder trap and aoe them down. I plan to bust out Dorian or Vivienne when I start my 2h Elf Warrior game next.

Solas
Blackwall
Cole (Archer) or Dorian, not sure yet. I've been underwhelmed by Sera on my current play through.

My dream team.
Blackwall (sword and board unkillable tank who never drinks my health potions because f**k healing. He can tank a dragon with 1hp.)
Me (Knight enchanter mage)
Together we go fight demons and darkspawn and dragons. ![]()
Too bad he smells funny because he's sleeping in a barn. ![]()

Four sword and board warriors. Tanks are a bit OP in this game.

Hmm. Good question..
I know my "dream team" in DA2 was Anders ("I hate templars!"), Fenris ("I hate mages!"), and Varric ("I have blood on my coat!"). The three of us demolished everything in our path. Of course it meant that I didn't get a whole lot of quality time with others in my party since I favored those three so much, but it was alright.
My current set-up is:
-Rogue Inquisitor (Archer)
-The Iron Bull (Beefcake #1)
- Blackwall (Beefcake #2)
-Vivienne (Don't call me Viv)
I've taken that group into several rough areas and we always come out on top. The boys rush forward or use their "get over here" grappling hooks while Vivienne and I do damage from the sidelines.
I used Iron Bull, Vivienne, and Cole (sneaky, stealthy poison ninja rogue) during the Haven fight and it worked quite nicely despite my misgivings. ![]()

Cass, Solas, and Cole are my main team. The way it typically goes:
Cass: RAWR *rushes in*
Cole: *stealths and side stabbeths*
Solas: *casts Pull of the Abyss in the middle of that*
Lavellan: *runs in there swinging her spirit blade and everything dies*
Right now I'm doing Western Approach stuff, so Blackwall is on tank duty for the time being.

Alec Trevelyan - Knight Enchanter: Usually wades right into the thick of action, as expected, but staying back as support is an option as well. Back-to-back badassery on the front lines with his romantic interest Cass is pretty awesome for role-playing purposes, especially against dragons.
Cassandra: Awesome tank (Blackwall's better at tanking, but I don't much care for him), free damage boost from Blessed Blade is always welcome, and upgraded Spell Purge destroys any fools who put up a barrier. Works on banishing demons at fade rifts as well.
Sera: Upgraded Flask of Fire is pretty silly, even without the Thousand Cuts exploit. One Full Draw and multiple Long Shots on a high priority target is a pretty decent way to start an engagement. Sorry Varric, but Bianca simply doesn't have the flexibility of a crafted Masterwork Bow.
Dorian: Necromancy + Lightning tree makes for pretty good crowd-control. Mainly there for the fabulousity, though. Swap out for Iron Bull if I need more muscle up front.

Inquisitor (Knight Enchanter)
Blackwall (two-handed)
Iron Bull (weapon and shield)
Cassandra (weapon an shield)
I found this team to be capable of tackling the strongest enemies in the game and they get along pretty well too...

Norms:
Cassandra,
Dorian
Viv
or
Cassandra
Dorian
Sera
or
Varied for easy quests/zones and for personal quests just to mix it up. Except for Blackwall's quests. I made sure I left him at home for every warden find after he got my character angry. lol Sit in the barn and make rocking horses! I will find all your things myself! muahaha!
"I wish I would have been there for that" Pffft.
Sera does crazy damage but Dorians magic just LOOKS so great. I started to bring Viv along just because I felt bad about ignoring her and found her useful in her own way. I was underwhelmed with Varric though, I must not have upgraded him enough, he felt weak in comparison. I was a rogue so I didn't see much of Cole. Same with Iron Bull, I had already found favorites. Next time! =)

So far, it been pretty much:
Blackwall or Cassandra (Cass has all the fire resist gear for dragon killing)
Varric
Dorian, because I love his attitude and his DPS
My character--dwarven archer

Usually my team is myself (S&S Warrior), Cassandra or Blackwall as my fellow tanks with Dorian and Solas providing the fire power. I don't know why, but rift and necro magic seems to work incredibly well together.
I used to use Viv instead of Dorian, but I get more of a 'boom' with the Dorian/Solas combo.

I can't imagine why people would use Cassandra when Blackwall has greater damage immunity. Then again I'm not fighting mages often.
Vivienne although I would love to gag her is a pretty good off tank and mage in one.
Cole archer for DPS,
Myself as second mage for barrier spamability.
Obviously I'm on nightmare so survivability is key.

The team that works for me is Vivienne, Cassandra, and Varric. They are a trio of true BAMFs. (I'm an archer with the useless assassin spec.)
