im new and a little confused. im level 6 and in the hinterlands and am wondering about visiting other places. i can go and look for lost soldiers in a new area (raining) - but all of the drops are about 3 levels above my characters which makes them useless.

does this mean i need to wait until i am a higher level to visit the area to get the most out of it?

Yes, it is perfectly acceptable to take a break from the Hinterlands right now. As you may have noticed, the toughest monsters there are level 12, so you aren't meant to complete everything in one go.

I believe the Storm Coast is the next area for your level, which everything there should be about level 5+. The Fallow Mire where the lost soldiers are, is still a little bit above your level.

But it's fine to go to other places. Hinterlands has mobs up to level 12 or so, and you're intended to level in other zones before hitting up those areas in the Hinterlands.

It's really up to you, I jumped between the mire, hinterlands and the coast up until level ten then finally progressed the story line.

Leave for sure. You want to get to the story quest as soon as you reach the right level. Open the world up and allows you to get a lot more companions.

Up to you.

If you go there will be trouble. But if you stay there will be double.

Up to you.

So, if you want me off your back... get me a ladder.

Without any spoilers.

Go to Val Royeaux, you will start a quest chain there. Before you do that, I recommend you finish alot of the sidequest in Hinterlands, since few of those are tied to aquiring a Agent. Also if able, try and finish all the quests in Haven, you will be understand why soon. Also some of the companions can be missed, if you progress the storyline to far. So I recommend you meet these companions, the moment you unlock them.

If you dont care about the agents, then go to Val Royeaux and follow the main storyline untill the the end of Act 1.

You aren't locked into staying in one area.  If you go elsewhere and find that the enemies are too tough you can always go back and level some more. I think I cleared about half of the Hinterlands before I moved on to explore other areas.

You can go to Storm Coast, and there is a good reason to go there. You may have also unlocked Fallow Mire, but don't bother with that yet.

At level 6 you are ready to do the first story mission outside of the Hinterlands, go ahead and do that; you can always return to this area later if you like. (As someone else said, be sure to do all the Haven missions as well) This will give you a break from the wandering around without a plot and make you feel as though you are accomplishing something.  When you are 8th level, depending on your class, you can try some of the other maps - you can tackle the Coast and the Mire around that level and when you hit a point where you can't, just jump out and do something more appropriate to your abiltity and go back when you feel safe.  Your party makeup can be really important, too; I'd hit the Coast, first, so you get the party member there - it happens quickly - and with that person and Cassandra in your group, you're gold for awhile. (but be sure to always have a rogue, mage and fighter in your group at all times, as there are barriers you can't pass without one of each class member with you)
