So I took my sweet ass time looking around for the three veterans and the lyrium.  I made it back before the hall was lost but I got a line from Barris that he was hurt but not to worry. Then once I killed the demon I go back and some random Templar guy tells me Barris died.  This took me by surprise.

Yep happened in my first playthrough. You have to check back on the fall fairly regularly for him to sruvive.

Yes apparently if you let the counter go down to far before returning it sets up a injury for him that kills him later during the ritual. It was shocking when it happened because he's so earnest and likeable.

I HATE that quest. I barely got a bit further before I would have to run back.

Easiest thing to do is race through and get to upper levels then return to the main hall via the upper level where you will then be on the rafters or whatever they are called where there are ladders all around but they are in the up position. Drop all of them (you can run around the top to both sides) and if you make that a priority to do, getting back fast is always easier because it's shorter time also meaning you can do more searching and actually find a vet faster. Those ladders up slows you immensely at least in the ability to return to the templars to help them ASAP.  Just try not to let that bar hit half too. It's a pain but with the ladders down and watching for when it's nearing half you will generally be able to pull it off and keep them safe.

Yeah. I felt pretty bad about that. But I wasn't exactly surprised because I somehow got completely turned around trying to get back to the main hall and he had just the tiniest bit of health left on my first try through that quest. "I'm hurt but I can still fight" followed by "Yes, this is a potentially fatal ritual" and I was pretty sure I'd failed him. Poor guy. He deserved better.

I like seriously missed out on almost all the loot to make sure I kept his ass alive.

Also, it was totally worth it!

That sucks. Ser Barris is awesome. He's probably my favorite background NPC in the game. He faired very well in my first play-through.

I didn't know you could save him. He got injured and then died for me, too. I feel like such a heel now.

Does he appear after that quest?  I did it on my second playthrough (kept him alive, I'd go back to the hall when Cass told me she could hear fighting).

Yeah, I allied with them.

I like that 2 big choices I made in this game, I initially made as a 'get them out of the way in the first playthrough' mentality, but have ended up loving.  First was going with 2HW for class, my least favorite in DAO and DA2.  Second was 'Siding with Templars' - I never thought I would actually feel good about having done so.  Annulment in DAO I've only ever done once (for achievement, then reloaded save and saved the mages), and in DA2, despite 5 or 6 complete playthroughs, I do not have Mage Hunter trophy yet.

Died for me too. I didn't feel like backtracking every five seconds cuz he couldn't handle a few demons...useless templar

I was going to do that, until everyone but two people approved, then I restarted having to do the boss fight over again just so i could ally

'Mage Hunter' is where you have to side with Meredith five times, right? I've found that siding with Meredith and siding with the Templars does not go hand in hand. Much to my completionist achievement-seeking chagrin, mind you. That was one weird thing I noticed in the Keep because part of what messes me up on that front is that I always tell her to drop the conspiracy plot. 'Revenge isn't healthy, Meredith. People already think you're crazy, don't make it worse.' In the Keep? There's no 'I kept it to myself and told them to shove it' option. xD

Personally, if I could get the 'Save the Templars' mission and the Red Templar General subplot in one playthrough, I would be an extremely happy camper. All the Templar content, yes please! I conscripted them in mine, (that particular Inquisitor was not leaving them to their own devices after they'd all been so thoroughly duped by their senior leadership, they'd embarrassed themselves enough) but I seem to recall they attempt to reform the Order so I wonder if those options would still be available for Ser Barris if you can keep him alive?

I conscripted the templars and i had the operstions , the only thing that chances are the dialogue for allies and conscripted in the quest promotion scene.
And he appears at the temple of mythal too.

Well, I am glad I'm going for a second playthrough, then, to make a few different choices (most minor, but this one is major, apparently). I finished the templar quest already a couple of times, but I wasn't sold on my main character choice. Unfortunately, after playing a DW Tempest Rogue, everything else just bores me to tears. There's nothing quite as cool as being the highest DPS character on your team (regardless of who you choose), being able to be anywhere on the battlefield in an instant with Hook and Tackle, having the ability to off-tank, stop time, and use your abilities with no cooldown and no stamina cost, not to mention making the best use of whatever potions or tonics you are carrying out of any other spec in the game. Every other method of combat I've tried just feels like I'm moving in slow motion now. >.< At least this rogue is a different gender and race, which will give me some different romance options and a few different War Table missions that should prove to be both interesting and highly rewarding in influence.

I was seriously considering not running the Templar alliance this time around, because I enjoy the mage mission a bit more, and the events that unfold afterward seem a bit more natural when you go that route (getting Dorian earlier than Cole). Now that I know Ser Barris is such a strong NPC, though, I'm going to make sure I save him this time around, no matter how long it takes me. Thanks for the comments, folks! I really appreciate it!

He is my only reason for siding with the templars. So he must not die. Otherwise I would go mages. Samson is much more interesting than Calpurnia.

I really dislike that mechanic. While it's totally doable, I don't like the way they force a false sense of urgency. Don't tell me to explore then punish me for doing exactly what you've told me to do. Same with Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts.

Every time Cassandra said, "I hear fighting, we should go back" I went back. Missed a lot of loot but totally worth it. I knew I liked him the first I met him. He challenged his commanding officer in public, that took cajones. He then goes on to prove he rules.

Is that the fellow you promote? I remember the game taking control of my inquisitor, and promoting a fellow. Fun when I have no say in such things.
