Hey guys, having finally completed Far Cry 4 and then seeing the secret ending online, I have to say it was one of the best alternate endings I have ever seen. Not going to spoil it, but it left me crushed, knowing that everything I'd done, everyone I killed, all the damage, pain, and chaos I'd caused was all actually for nothing, if I'd only made the right choice.

Basically at one point in the early game a character tells you to do something, and if you actually do what they say, then the game ends immediately, revealing all the ending revelations, and essentially meaning any violence you would have committed otherwise would have been for nothing. (Basically the secret ending has a much better outcome than the full game's *good* ending.) Needless to say, it made me feel really bad.

So, it got me thinking about these kind of alternate endings, what are some your favourites?

Wing Commander III

A game that's positively ancient by most today's people's standards, but it had mastered branched storytelling in a for its time extraordinary cinematic fashion long before modern AAA titles went on to claim to supply over 40 different endings.

Maybe you can share links or explain why the alternate/secret ending is so good?

It's spoilerific. Google "Far Cry 4 Secret Ending" and you'll be able to find it.

Essentially, the game starts off with you traveling to do a distant land to do one thing. You get caught up in some craziness and wind up starting a war.

However, there is a point in the beginning where the main bad guy tells you to wait somewhere until he gets back. If you sit and don't do anything for ten (real time) minutes, he will come back in, apologize for making you wait, take you to do the very thing you came to the country to do, and then explained why he's not such a bad guy after all (although he truly and completely IS a psychotic sadist freak, he just has slightly better reasons than being evil for the lolz). Essentially, you can "beat" the game in fifteen minutes by doing something most of us would do in real life - sit still and wait when someone asks us to.

EDIT: Wow, I'm an idiot. Just saw YOU were the OP. Derp my entire post is derp.

Agreed. The fact that any of your squadmates could die just as easily and it was a true Permadeath, but the game had extended story arcs for each of them was really amazing. The game was WAY ahead of its time.

I was actually looking at Myst and curious which ending you considered the secret one. Red, Blue or Green?

You know, if Chris Roberts were to start a kickstarter to get the necessary funds to get all the rights for Wing Commander back (afaik EA still has them locked up collecting dust somewhere after they purchased Origin (not that Origin)) and remake them with contemporary graphics and gameplay, I'd go and load up my prepaid credit card the instant I know of it and back it, back it, BACK IT!

Chrono Trigger had a whole mess of alternate and secret endings; my favorite was the programmer's ending, which IIRC is accessed if you are able to beat Lavos at the end of the Ocean Palace level.

What secret or alt ending does VII have?

As for me, I'd say Final Fantasy XIII-2.

It has like 7 alternate endings:

And then there's the actual secret ending. The game has these things called fragments that you get from quests and from all the alternate endings, and a few other things like playing the slot machine and getting a certain set of cards, faces, whatever. You literally have to sit there and play a slot machine for hours to get this fragment, which is necessary for the "true" ending. Just crazy.

But anyway. I personally think the real ending is amazing, though it's definitely a kick in the teeth (fun fact: I misspelled that "d*ck in the teeth"). And the secret ending takes it a notch further:

Um...surely you've heard of Star Citizen (the most crowd-funded product of all time, OF ALL TIME) and Squadron 42?

The closest would be green, though I wouldn't quite call it secret.

Nier's secret ending will always hold a special place in my heart. Completely wiping your data undoing everything you did for a moderately happy ending.

Yeah Far Cry 4 has to have one of the best easter egg endings I have ever seen, it also makes the actual ending to the game that much more awesome by lending it a sort of ironic humour that if you had just waited and eaten your crab rangoon like a civilized person you could have spread your mother's ashes and inherited the country without any bloodshed, chaos and destruction.

I don't think there's secret Ending in too many games. Like you enter a secret door or do a lot of abnormal deeds and the ending changes?

About Alternative, it's either like RPGs (not typical main ending) or an Alternative ending provided by a patch, DLC or a modder?

No, seriously. What's the "secret ending" or "alternate ending" in FF VII. The only side story content in that game that I know of is the few times you run into the Turks, and Yuffie at her town (whatever it's called).

None of those are Wing Commander ...

Spiritual successor. A la BG & DA.
