I don't exactly remember just exactly where, but I read somewhere that the race-gating would make sense (lore/story-wise, that is). For Solas, it indeed made a lot of sense, but for Cullen it.... didn't? At least, I couldn't find the reason, please correct me if I'm wrong.
So.... has there been any explanation for the race-gating? I could understand human-only and human-elf only if the inquisitor WASN'T Dalish, but Dalish elves are A-OK so that kinda... confuses me. A lot.
I'm seriously beginning to think it's resources/development time related and not story/lore related.
Any ideas? Explanations? Dev posts I missed that reveal the big thing? Stuff? Anything?
So... Why is Cullen race-gated?

Or maybe Cullen is an apple pie kinda guy and doesn't see dwarves or qunari as attractive.

It could connect back to the fact that the female mage warden could be an elf or human, then again I never attempted to flirt with him as a qunari. Resources could be the reason but then again maybe the guy just has preferences.

It could just be that we already know Cullen likes human and elven ladies (since he likes the mage warden in DA:O), so those were the basic minimum if the romance was going to be developed at all, and there weren't the resources to add more races.

given the the definition of racism means he find certain races inferior to his own or another race, no he isn't racist. He's just a guy with a preference for what he's sexually attracted to.

Not necessarily, he just might not find them attractive. Just because you're not attracted to red hair, for example, doesn't mean you dislike redheads (nothing against red heads, it's just the first thing that popped into mind cuz I just saw that line from Iron Bull)

Let's be honest, we all have our preferences, even in a world where we only deal with humans. Some fancy tall people, some like people with short hair, others prefer muscles. In some cases, love conquers all and we go beyond the boundaries of our personal preferences. But we still only date humans.
Sure, we all can say stuff like: Doesn't matter if my partner is twice my size and has horns, I love them anyway. But we honestly can't say if we really would be able to do that.

Quinari started a war and tore apart Kirkwall while he was there. I'm fairly sure that might make him a bit leery of quinari. I think he's most familiar with elves so that makes sense. I wish Solas wasn't elves only, I get why but then again, Mythal is fine with joining with a human so surely if joining with a human works then why not a relationship with one? It could have had some very interesting points of view and give opportunity for a rather interesting exchange.

No more than being gay makes you a misogynist.
No more than being a lesbian makes you a misandrist.
Just because you're not attracted to people doesn't mean you have a bias against whatever group they are a part of.

Well the only woman he was ever interested in before you was either a human or an elf. He worked in the circle after all. Assuming you were the mage in DA:O.

Does being straight make me an homphobe? He doesn't want to be sexually involved with Qunaris or Dwarves, it's his own choice.

How do you figure? Is a white person racist because they aren't physically attracted to, say, an asian person, or african etc? Are asian / black people racist if they don't find white people attractive?
No. The answer is no.
Racism entails prejudice, discrimination or antagonism against a person of a different ethnicity based on the belief their own ethnicity or "race" is superior.
For example, if Cullen wasn't attracted to elves because he felt they were "an inferior people who excel at poverty", then he would be fair to call racist. But failing to find elves (or Qunari etc) attractive simply because they don't appeal to his personal preferences doesn't make him racist, not by any stretch or definition.

I find it far more likely it had to do with cinematics not wanting to make everything work with dwarves and qunari

Devs said it would make sense story wise iirc, so not all that obvious.Um, I thought this was obvious lol
As for the rest of the replies: I get that people have preferences, but he's the only one (because seriously... what other race besides elves would date the dread wolf) that has that type of preference, which seems odd. And Id argue its a tad bit different than sexuality.
For the record, I dont think "because preferences" is an invalid reason, but a bit of a 'meh' reason.

You got it in your initial post - resources, not character building. Cullen is only an option at all because of the release delays.
And of ALL the characters to try to analyze and make consistent through the series, Cullen HAS to be one of the worst.
I think he's fine in DAI, but I had to work very hard to ignore his possible endings in Origins and the complete disconnect between all my party's mages saving him and having him totally go off about mages aren't people and should be locked up. Okay, man, well we'll just be shuffling on off out of the Gallows now. ![]()

Are you possibly attributing Darrah's comment about Solas' romance race-gate making "super story sense" to Cullen's?

Probably because his romance was only added during the additional development time and they didn't feel like making additional animations for Qunari and Dwarves.
