Sadly, on my new playthrough for DA:I I got hit with that bug where Dorian's personal quest with his dad never triggers. I've done everything I can to get it to start but nothing.

Does anyone have anything solid that can force trigger it? Or will it be fixed soon? :( Really sucks I wont be able to be besties with Dorian this time because his quest hates me.

which one?

Mother Giselle (the one you first meet in hinterlands who comes to have) gives you 'the last resort of good men',

One less ventatori comes after redcliffe events

magister's birthright requires you to be a male and is a prereq to romance.

What decisions did you make? There's a list of do and don't things that helps but I think it should trigger even then.

His first one with Mother Giselle.

I sided with the mages and made them allies, and I'm not sure I got one less venatori either despite doing the redcliffe mission, but I cant be for certain.

But I made sure to talk to Dorian and didnt mention Alexius until I sentenced him since I read that disables it? but then i reloaded and talked to him about him before sentencing him and still nothing.

It triggers immediately after you speak to Dorian about the letter he is reading regarding Felix.  So far, I have rolled back to just before Skyhold 4 times, replayed all those initial cut scenes in Skyhold and every time I have found Giselle waiting in the hall near Varric as soon as I come down the stairs from that one conversation with Dorian.  In fact one of those times I did the whole new to Skyhold cut scenes and then made a beeline upstairs.  I talked to Dorian twice in succession to trigger the cut scene regarding the letter and Felix, then ran downstairs and found her standing on top of the fallen boards and ruin in the main hall.  So I'm fairly positive it is that one convo that triggers it.

If you walk close enough to her she will call out to you.  Here's the rub though, if you do not go straight to her she will walk away and leave the hall and I'm not sure if that kills the quest or if it bugs it for good.  Chasing her down or talking to her in the garden has never worked for me.  The first time I decided to talk to Varric first thinking she would wait.  When I was done with him she was gone.  The next time I came downstairs I saw her at the front of the hall but went straight across to the war room to see what would happen if I hadn't triggered her to call out to me.  When I came back she was gone.  So the window of opportunity is small.

So, hoping this helps anyone out there who is trying to get this quest.

Someone posted a fix that helped me and have helped many others, when everything else fails. Here:

Nayana_Jaz on the Bioware Forum:

"I didn't give up and I did the following steps:

  • Sided with the Mages and talked about everything with him in Haven.
  • I left Skyhold immediately after Haven was destroyed (I didn't talk to anyone I just left and came back)
  • Talked to him in Skyhold upon my return which triggered the "One moment you're trying to restore order in a world gone mad" speech scene.
  • Then I talked to him directly after that and the Felix letter scene startet
  • Then I walked down into the main hall and there she was - Mother Giselle"

I also chosed the "we must stop the big bad guy" when asked what kind of inquisitor my character was going to be. It earns Dorian's approval.

I couldnt get him on my first time through and at about 130 hours I ditched that game (was almost at the end) and started again because I was so pissed about the Dorian thing.

I did the above on the new playthrough and the quest triggered as intended.  (Thought I think I pretty much did the same on the first bugged play through.)

I had to enter the tavern 8 or 9 times to trigger the dad+dorian scene twice... At the point where it finally worked (or that I was desperate enough to enter the tavern, re-load, enter again and so on) I already had the quest for 20 hours. :(

So if you're stuck there after finally getting the quest: don't give up. The entire quest seems to trigger a bit too random.

It's usually best to enter the tavern with Dorian, instead of using your inquisitor. It helps to trigger the scene on the first try.

Tried this and still nothing, I also tried the suggestions other people had for going with Templars but that didn't work either.

I guess my only option is creating a new character, but then there's still the possibility that it could be bugged again on the new file. Beyond frustrated

Have you tried not talking to him at Haven at all especially not about Alexius and then exchausting his dialogue when you finally get to Skyhold? There's also some who link Varric's placement in the Hall as potentially being why Mother Giselle won't appear and so it is best to try to get the quest before speaking to Varric about a certain someone.

I really hope it's not a bug that's randomly divided amongst the player characters.

I encountered this bug in my first game, but was able to successfully obtain it in my second.  This is how I did it:

-Recruited Dorian.

-IMMEDIATELY got Skyhold.  No questing at all between recruiting Dorian and Skyhold. I DID exhaust his dialogue in Haven, and flirted at every opportunity.

-I chose "**** must be stopped."

-Immediately spoke to Dorian TWICE upon regaining control of Inquisitor. (Didn't leave Skyhold first, didn't judge Alexius first.)  Upon second initiation of conversation, the scene with Felix's letter triggered.  Mother Giselle then showed up in the throne room, and everything proceeded as normal.

It still sucks because you have to go from new acquaintance with Dorian right to being besties/lovers, but at least I got to see the quest. :/

It worked on my previously bugged run when I:

-Did not talk to Dorian after recruiting him

-Started "In Your Heart Shall Burn" immediatley afterwards

-Spoke to Dorian as the first in Skyhold's pre-repair stage

-Did not speak to Varric at the battlements

Dorian's letter cutscene triggered the first time I talked to him and Mother Giselle appeared after it finished with no trouble. I don't think what option you choose doing the ceremony matters as I chose the elf-specific one.

I wonder if the keylink is not doing any quest after getting Dorian since I did Vivienne's recruitment after Redcliffe.

This.  I think THIS is it.

The only major difference in my two games is that in the broken one, I did  TON of questing between recruiting Dorian and obtaining Skyhold, including all quests that Dorian himself had to offer.

In the second game, where I actually got this to work, I did no questing at all in between.

I still would really appreciate an update on a possible ETA for a fix here.  I got it to work in my second game, but my main game is still on hold on the off chance a future patch might still allow this quest to trigger.

I'm having the same problem. Unfortunately I'm too far in to roll back at this point. No way I'm giving up ~40 hours of gameplay just to get one stinking quest.

Same here, but I hope BW can fix this in the next patch.

I deleted the Personal_Options file in the save folder (\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\Save). Tested it several times and it worked each time...looks like something gets stored in there for the tavern cutscene.

There are no other consequences on your game other than you will have to reset your preferences.

I remember exhausting dialogue with Dorian in Haven. But after getting to skyhold the magisters birthright was pretty much the first quest I did. I know because I did it really early in my game and felt like I didn't have much to talk to him about afterwards.

So I think you're right- i think doing it as soon as you get to skyhold might be the difference between getting it and not getting it.

Okay, it isn't bugged, it does have a small window as to when it can be started though. When Dorian gets the letter about Felix, in Skyhold, you have to go right to the main hall after that, Gisel will be there, walk near her, let her call to you, talk to her - BINGO, you have the quest. Fail to talk to Dorian at the right time to get the Felix letter or, fail to get to the hall soon enough after and, you don't get it at all.

Any indication as to when you receive the Felix letter; in what order of events?   Clearly the Felix letter is crucial.    Now 1st run through I got the Felix letter and the Mother Giselle conversation without any problem.   Trouble is I can't remember what I did/did not do in advance of that.     Odd thing is that there have been about 3 patches since then, so it ought to be better not worse.

Having completed this main quest run after about 100 hours, I then realised I would be doing the rest of the questing without 2 key members of my team.     Didn't fancy that so went back to just after the tutorial to begin again.    Got to about 40 hours in and realised the Felix letter hadn't appeared.   Came to the boards - saw it could be a bug and so replayed from Redcliffe Castle.    Have got to Skyhold again and followed some of the advice found on the boards but still no Felix letter.      Don't know if it is because I am using just earlier versions of the same game (so possibly some of the flags haven't reset) or whether it is the bug or whatever.

I want this to be my canon version of the game so would like everything covered.     It also means that Dorian doesn't look like a d**k for encouraging my girl's flirting and not putting her straight about his sexuality.   Even if I ignore it and continue with this game, next time I want to do the Dorian romance and whilst the parent quest isn't essential for this, it would be nice for it to be included because it does tell you so much more about his character.

So is it really a bug and when should the Felix letter appear?

I have the exact same problem. First time with Dorian, I got the letter scene but Giselle bugged out so I couldn't get the quest. Second time around, the letter scene hasn't triggered and I'm almost 40 hours in. I've exhausted his dialogue, ran off and done other things to progress time, done all of his war table quests (save the Hosue of Amladaris one)... Still no Felix letter scene.

It'd be nice if the triggers were cleaned up. They appear to be all over the place. On my playthrough where I romanced the Bull, I somehow magically triggered Giselle appearing in the main hall with Dorian's quest. I never did his Venatori quests or anything. I never even had him in my party.

Well I didn't do much questing between getting Dorian and triggering the magisters birthright, but I did do some. After siding with the Templars I needed to get his approval high enough to trigger it. I had to do the war table missions so Leliana would give me Dorians quest "one less venatori."

While waiting to trigger the start of "one less venatori" I also liberated Griffons Keep and the beginning mining quest in the western approach (I was hoping if I found Venatori and killed them with Dorian It would help boost approval.) so I didn't complete many quests after recruiting Dorian but I did do some. I could certainly see how doing too many quests might progress you past a point of being able to trigger it though.

BTW In my playthrough I left Varric in the battlements and went to talk to Mother Giselle immediately after getting the Felix letter scene.

That's strange I've triggered his quest in 3 different games without problems. I always side with the mages though. I've quested a bunch after judging Alexius, gone back & get the talk w/Dorian about putting Alexius to work with the mages. The next dialogue is always the letter and then the I go immediately down to the Mother.

Ok, so I have been having this very same issue with Dorian AND Iron Bull. I do not have a save file right where I first arrived to SKyhold 30 hours ago, and I refuse to lose 55 hours of gameplay just to MAYBE get it to trigger.

I contacted the EA/Bioware/Origin customer service team through their messenger on 3 occasions, and each time I was told that they would open a case, personally look into it, only to get an e-mail the next day saying that my case was closed and they are sorry for the inconvenience.

Instead, I got in touch with a friend of mine, who is friendly with a Bioware rep. She put in the word that I was extremely angry with the game glitching and not triggering personal quests when it should, and they made an internal inquiry. Problem is, the rep said that everyone at Bioware that would work on a patch is out until after the New Year.... so who knows when and if this will ever get patched. This guy promised he would make sure it got someone's attention though.

After the treatment of not being able to romance my favorite character after 55 hours and then the lousy customer service, I am kind of done until this is fixed, and if it is not, goodbye DAI.

While the online messenger didn't work for me, if you are not happy about this I would definitely recommend signing in and reporting the issue here so maybe it will get Bioware and EA to notice:
