I decided to uninstall and try reinstalling after getting the disc 2 error mentioned earlier, and my install crapped out on english.rar. Trying the ISO trick, seems to be working so far, and it's gotten past english.rar without any problems /knockwood. Thank you very much!

Kinda pathetic that we have to do workarounds like this in order to INSTALL AND PLAY GAMES THAT WE PAID MONEY FOR, though. Not that I'm BITTER or anything.  Nosireebob, nothing I love more than shlepping to Best Buy and paying fifty bucks for a massive friggin' migraine on two discs!

Well, after all that wailing and gnashing of teeth, I did finally manage to install the game and get it running with the aforementioned ISO trick, but right now I am just so aggravated by the whole thing that I don't even want to play.

Thanks to everyone who contributed workarounds!
(still doesn't change my opinion that the people who wrote the installation program need to be fired and savagely beaten, though)

Thanks, lyssol. Copying the disc 2 files over to the disc 1 files did the trick. I swear I hate Securom. It always interferes with game installations. I have to install most games manually.

If anyone has any questions about the virtual install let me know. When I tried to image disc 2 it failed at about 50% (it's in the instructions that it only got to 50%).

You don't have to image Disc 2 if your disc 1 got the full image. Just mount Disc 1 virtually and keep disc 2 in your drive, it'll work out. Least it did for me. Again, let me know if you have any specific questions.

(Using image copying software isn't pirating if you bought the game!)
Edit: It would also be great if we could sticky this. I see tons of threads popping up that are literally the same as this.

If your installing disc 1 off of daemon tools, doesn't it look for disc 2 to be in the same "drive"? I have disc2 in the physical drive, and it doesn't notice it when I install off of a disc1 iso.

At any rate, I'm trying once again to create a disc2 iso.  I'm at 56%.  We'll see.  I've been to the vendor twice today for this game already.  It's pretty ridiculous.  I've been jumping through hoops for 5 hours, and I'm pretty savvy with these things, usually.

Failed again. They certainly have a problem with the disc 2s that they're shipping.

Actually, a lot of people are reporting it looks for disc 2 in a different drive than disc 1. Like my virtually mounted disc 1 was in "G:" and my normal dvd drive is "E:"

Basically it goes to the last or first "drive" you have. Hopefully your disc 2 .iso will burn right, but if it doesn't, just make sure your disc 1 was in a virtual drive with a higher letter (if your normal is E: make it F: or G:...)

Wait, no.  disc1 iso was in E and disc2 physical was in D.

Installation Failed!
The installation of Mass Effect 2 has failed.
A Data error occured

So far....
Best Buy, 5 trips and 5 bad DVDs
My room mate= Gamestop, 3 trips and 3 bad DVDs

Different stores, different DVDs and different computers but same problem.

Been trying to do the ISO trick but no luck so far, up to my 16th try  *grinding teeth*

From what I can tell, its the movies that are causing all this pain and suffering.

If you go into data\\\\movies.rar\\\\BioGame\\\\Movies and unpack each BIK movie, you will find at least one movie that has been corrpted. What really gets me mad is that its the XBOX movies thats been giving me problems. Why is there xbox movies in the PC version?  *rolls eyes*

If anyone gets there DVD to work, please post an update for the rest of us.

Edit:
Its DVD 1 giving us problems

Besides, I don't understand why making a disc1 iso is so important, it seems pretty clear that the problem is with disc2. Don't get me wrong, and I'm very happy that you found a way to make this work. The problem is that they shipped crappy disc 2s. I've picked up 2 just today. These still don't work.

EDIT: for what it's worth - Yep, Best Buy.

Heh, so both discs are potentially no good. Ah well. Torrin1234 - this time I tried installing again, and it did go directly to disc2 instead of asking for a disc change. So far it's been stuck on english.rar 1.5% for about 20 minutes...

Disc 1 is important because from where it's mounted you can put in disc 2. Like my disc 2 wouldn't read at all when installing. It just stuck on the "insert disc 2 - retry or cancel"

IF you disc 2 is NOT damaged I would guess it's the INSTALLER on disc 1 that's causing the problems. Both my discs actually have tiny scratches from my DVD drive. But they don't cause the problem.

If yours is stuck even after switching seemlessly to disc 2 it could be a manufacture problem by sitting on that english. My install DID take a while but be patient and who knows. (I'm always SCREW THIS if it doesn't work within 2 minutes, but my step-dad has been at this longer than me and is far more patient)

And redco, the two installs on this thread are not meant to be used together. It's either one or the other. Unpacking it manually isn't going to help if you're trying to mount them virtually.

Try imaging both discs and virtually mount each one. So like when install process on disc 1 has completed virtually, do not put your disc 2 in the drive but replace your virtual mount disc 1 with the disc 2 image. *shrug*

Thank you lyssol. Copying the DVD's to the HDD first allowed the installation to complete. I hope that's the only bug I run into. Cheers.

I could not get my dvd-rw drive to read disc 2 at all. I had to use someone's laptop to burn it to an iso file. In this case, you have to mount it (I think) when you are prompted by the installer to insert the second disc, and then click "retry."

Also, if anyone in a similar situation is using a flash drive to store the data, remember to format as NTFS so it can handle the large file.

Thank you for the solution torrin1234. After 6 hours of frustration, making an ISO of disk1 using Daemon Tools lite worked for my issue ( install failed at English.rar 51.1%, disk 2). Installation completed without issue when we executed using the ISO and kept disk2 in the dvd drive. We also made an ISO of disk 2 and found no errors. Both disks were in good physical condition.

So I don't understand what the heck Daemon is or ISO files are even after going to Daemon's manual...buuut, I did try to manually install ME2 by copying the first disk into a folder titled Disk1, and then the second disk into a folder titled Disk2, which are both contained in a folder I titled GameDisks. And the first disk installs fine, like usual, but then it asks for me to put in the second disk...and I'm stuck there, putting the disk in and hitting "retry" doesn't work, and I don't know what else to do. Can anybody help?
