I'd imagine you could do that Rich, if you fixed it by doing that post the news, I'm sure someone will have the same problem. The more fixes the merrier.

sorry this is a stupid question, im new to all the daemon tool stuff and couldnt find how to make an image out of a disc on the forum.

i downloaded daemon tools lite and all it did was give me the option of mounting an image (i know how to do that, just not make an actual iso file). thanks anyways.

also i dont think i can actually exchange this game for a while because the gamestop i got this from was actually pretty far away. any chance bioware might give me a free one downloadably?

Once you have daemon installed then run it.

Make sure the panel is up (a little icon in the section near your clock, right click the lightning bolt cd icon and click "show panel").

Put disc 1 inside your DVD tray and with daemon push the "disc imaging" button (it's like a CD being covered by a black floppy icon).

It'll load and change the "destination image file" to where you want and make sure you make it .ISO.

Let it do its thing.

Once it is finished copying go back to the daemon panel and push the icon next to the imaging one. (Mount'n'drive...)

Your mass Effect 2 disc 1 should be under "user images" - double click on it.

Should pull it up like the real disc 1 was in.

Put disc 2 in your DVD tray, run the install on the VIRTUALLY MOUNTED disc 1 and it should go completely through.

WOO!

Ok, well I have tried to Daemon bit, it can't image either of the disks.
Disk 1 fails at 89% and Disk 2 at 0%

If I had the energy left I would try the other work around, but I fear frustration is going to get the better of me. I am suprised they can ship games in this state.

So i was wondering, im getting the "A data error occurred." failure. Does this one have a fix or does it just mean the whole disc is screwed? When i install the game it's all seems fine and dandy untill a random point during the install (all from 20% to 50-70%) when extracting the movies it just prompts the failure message.
It's a brand spanking new comp (bought on monday) with Win7 and everything box fresh, i really wanted to play with this just to see how a new game looks on it (haven't updated my comp in 6 years or so).
Hope somebody can help.  EDIT: oh and i've also gone back to the store to get a new copy, thinking that there were something wrong with the disc, since i got the same error on the first one.

Thank you Torrin. I only bought ME2 today and was getting annoyed there until I found your workaround.

I must be doing something wrong, since I tried both solutions in the opening post and they failed.

I'm fighting with this very same problem, can't get installer to load, or even windows (XP sp3) to recognise the whole disc. Only when I put the dvd into drive for the very fist time, did it manage to load installer and got all the way to 2nd dvd where it naturally failed. After that I've tried numerous reboots, dvd reinserts to drive and nothing works, sometimes only parts of the dvd are read, i.e. directX directory comes visible, nothing else, sometimes everything seems to be fine, but when I click setup.exe, installer gives error about broken files. This is pathetic, had I downloaded this from the net, I'd be playing this game right now.

How do I even copy the first disc? I installed daemon tools, but using the Add File option I can't select my mass effect 2 disc. When I click on it it just shows the different files on the disc, like data and support. Also, The thing (english is not my first language, so I have no idea what it's called) I put my discs into on the computer is called DVD-RW, but after I installed daemon tools I've gotten another one, called HD DVD-ROM. I don't understand how that can be, since the DVD-RW is the only one that is physically on my computer.

In case it wasn't mentioned, it appears you can do a reverse mounting in Daemon Tools for the same results. I mounted the second DVD image and had the first DVD in my drive, and the install ran through perfectly. Hooray for this thread! I thought my game was going to be a lost cause..

After the install is done, can I delete the copied files from my computer with no harm to the game? Those files+the installed game are taking a hefty chunk out of my hard-disc space.

That seems a strange thing to complain about when a half Terabyte Hdd is only $60 plus shipping!

BAM! It works like a charm. Copying the first disc to ISO and running it is faster that just trying to load the disc it seems....

I'm sorry but why should we have to do any of this? is it me or did I not pay good money for this product? If I had downloaded a cracked version I would expect to have to fiddle around with other applications, but when I easily meet the spec I feel very annoyed that I'm expected to do this. I also not with anger that this is not an official thread.

When I have the time I will try the fixes that you folk describe, thanks

=====================================================================================

UPDATE - I installed using the advanced option and it worked fine!

i'm getting exactly the same install error message, but i bought a digital download version of this game. i've been searching the forums since release date and can find no help with this. have redownloaded the entire file 6 times and still no success. 12 back and forth correspondence with D2D tech support and they seem unable to help.  this forum does not seem easily searchable. very frustrated. please help.

Now I remember why I have steered clear of PC games for the past 4-5 years. I have a screamer of a computer. 9800GTX/Intel Duo Quad Core/100 Gig RAM/Windows 7 and of course, yes, I have gotten that "DISC 2" failure prompt. I agree totally with busker. It is an absolutely scam to let these games hit the shelves not working when your paying so much out of pocket. Oh yea, GOOD LUCK after you get it to actually install. I'm sure more and more problems will continue to surface. Gotta love the CONSOLES.

Thanks for the advice guys but to me, it isn't even worth my time at the moment. I guess sometime in the next coming weeks I will give this another shot. If it doesn't work then, I'm cracking the disc and lighting it on fire...and of course..never buying another EA product again for PC.

Thank you so very much good friends. I decided to make the attempt to go through the process of installing the game. After multiple failed attempts and familiarization with the daemon tools, I have successfully installed Mass Effect 2. Blessings....blessings. I must also say...that I PHYSICALLY and ACTUALLY have a headache from this ordeal. I agree in fully that the person responsible for this must not necessarily be "FIRED"....but at the same time....if they are working for EA...I'm sure it would not be so hard to find a good job. I myself work SO VERY HARD...and make barely 11 dollars an hour.......so on the flip-side......you make the decision...but nonetheless....THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED.

DISAPPOINTED. Now that I have the game installed.....the Xbox controller that I bought to play the game with ISNT even compatible? I don't care if I get kicked off these message boards for this. But I say **** YOU DEVELOPERS! Mouse and keyboard SUCKS on a third person shooter.....NOTHING like the rumbling vibration on them triggers when your pumping off plasma energy into Geth troops. I may not even play this game PERIOD. I am so disgusted with this....I need......I need a break.....I can't believe....a huge XBOX/MICROSOFT hit would not allow us to play it on PC with a GOD DAMNED Xbox controller that SHOULD be compaitable? MAN **** SIOFHIDghaoisdagjdklfsaioghfudiongodsafiuhnwe98nw089fjds

Bringing this to the top now (I am surprised that the profane fool's comment wasn't removed when it was added) .

Where does it say that the game supports any Controllers? It doesn't. Don't blame others for your shortcomings.
Also, you don't shoot plasma in this game. Mass Effect 2 has no energy weapons, they all work on the Mass Effect principle by accelerating Mass to insane speeds. This way, even a simple grain of sand is lethal.
