I want to get a better grip on tactics, I know the basic of tank taking the damage while mages and rogues attack the distracted enemy. It is just when it comes to surviving taking on enemies either as a sword and shield or two-handed warrior. I die very easily so I hope I can get advice on using the right abilities. I always make sure I am at the right level with the best possibe equipment.

For a tank, you want every single passive and ability that gives you guard, you are not meant to dish out damage, only take it. Shield wall for instance, taunt, war cry, +3-5 guard on hit masterwork upgrades, the works. You want half a dozen points from the SnS tree, a bunch from the vanguard? tree and almost everything from the champion tree. If it gives you guard, you take it. Blackwall can keep his guard up permanently as can cassandra on my game because of where you stick the points.

The best equipment is the right equipment. Higher numbers in random stats is not going to make your character better.

 

You will also want to rush Turn the Bolt and Turn the Blade.
