I feel like I should make the effort to give my praise to Dragon Age: Inquisition. I was consistently impressed with almost every aspect of the game. It's the first RPG I've played in years that I actually felt satisfied with. The areas are expansive, yet varied and vibrant and I rarely noticed overuse of assets (and there were some creative uses of assets that helped keep things fresh ie the Tevinter dungeon frozen in time).
I felt like the main character was 'my' character, despite not being a fan of voiced protagonists. The character creator was really solid. There was often a good variety of roleplay options and I was pleasantly surprised just how much race and class came up in dialogue. I got a huge grin on my face when Solas started talking to me about being Dalish in a banter during the opening mission of the game and that kind of reactivity lasted throughout the game. It was also a nice touch that I could rail against the 'Herald of Andraste' title until I was blue in the face and tell Sera to go f*ck herself when she's insulting my character's heritage. The game was full of options like that.
I really didn't expect much from the main quests (particularly after reading a few reviews) but after getting used to mediocre, half finished plots full of wasted potential I was really satisfied with almost all of the main quests. I'd heard that the main villain was one dimensional but I actually preferred him to the archdemon, seeing as he actually had some semblance of depth and motive. The cameo's were, on the whole, incredibly satisfying and the whole thing felt...expensive? After playing Skyrim for a while recently I got used to getting a 'huh, that was it?' feeling from main plot quests but Inquisition never left me with that feeling. Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts was particularly impressive. There were a LOT of plot variations being balanced and I got a Patrick Weekes vibe from the quest?
The whole game just radiated passion and I got a palpable sense that the dev's really poured a lot of love and effort into everything. It was certainly not perfect but it deserves to be lauded and I really hope we see that level of passion and dedication recognised. And that a meaty expansion comes out of it.
I have a lot of scattered thoughts so:
-Cass and Bull are awesome. I thought I'd be indifferent to Cassandra and then the book scene happened. She's lovely.
-Areas felt full of life, there was a LOT of ambient dialogue and banter.
-Gameplay was fun, in my opinion. But as long as I can look cool slinging spells, I'm good, so my opinion on that doesn't mean much. I play for story. I enjoyed the hell out of a hard fought victory with a dragon five levels above me that I accidentally stumbled upon, though.
-The score was effective and I liked that it ebbed in and out of hearing, which stopped listener fatigue. Though at times it felt so sparse I think that might actually be a bug.
-Claudia Black did a phenomenal job.
-A bunch of other praises I'm forgetting to sing right now. The point is I was very impressed and if I can take the time to come online and moan then I should do the same with praise. So well done. I expected little and was blown away. *claps*
A few criticisms:
-At certain points I did start to feel like I was playing an MMO, just running around after plot markers not paying attention. The fetch quests definitely got out of hand
-Blackwall should have been gay and Dorian straight. Both characters would have instantly become more interesting and unique. This is clearly fact and not at all personal opinion.
-I felt like the game would have benefited from a dedicated city/settlement hub (besides Skyhold)
-Please can elf mage Inquisitors get something other than douchey trenchcoats to wear in DLC? I couldn't seem to find anything else
