Anyone else not really caring for the companion this time?

I mean you can only talk to them at your stronghold and not when you're out and about, a decision I don't understand. They don't really have much to say for the most part, and becomes annoying having to run around skyhold to speak to one after a mission.
And they're boring tbh. In dao we had morrigan "We are going to rescue kittens from trees now?" And da2 had Isabel, both attractive and fun/carefree.

We haven't really been able to say much to companions in the field since DA:A, though... I mean, I do kind of miss hearing their one-liners from time to time, but it's not a huge loss I guess.  It didn't detract from the quality of the companions, at least... I think this is one of the best groups we've seen so far, but of course that's a matter of opinion.

Definitely not boring. What party are you rolling with? Put Sera Blackwall and Vivienne in a party and magic happens.

I'm disappointed with a few but that's par for the course. I found Wynne and Zevran boring in DA: O, Anders and Merrill in DA2, and I don't particularly care for Iron Bull or Vivienne in this game (despite what I said about her banter, her character quest is very meh).

They have quite a bit to say, more than DAO/DA2 companions I'd wager.

You're probably right it just feels that way as you can't speak to them while exploring,  minus the gifts too.

It depends on who you take with you; some pairings have more to say than others.  (there's a thread about that elsewhere in this very forum)  Personally I think this is the best group of followers we've had so far - I like pretty much all of them to some extent, whereas I've always had someone I've hated in the previous games.  I just recently started taking Cassandra, Vivianne and Iron Bull with me and they are a blast together.  If your group isn't saying much, try switching out your companions and trying something different.

Iron Bull feels like little more than a well written check mark put in a box with the words "Token Qunari that Fans have been asking for since Sten" written next to it. He looks like the Devil from Legend and acts like a big mercenary. To me there really isn't much to him, the Qunari from DA2 were MUCH better and I would have taken one of them as a member in a heartbeat over Iron Bull.

Iron Bull is actually a very interesting look into Qunari culture as you talk to him.  He's also fun and brash and makes a lot of silly remarks during your travels, but those are really part of his surface mask that he puts on to throw people off ... as you get to talking to him between missions you realize how much deeper his character goes.

I found him very cliche, he and Cass are basically the same entity. Oh woe is me, I am the soldier who does not believe in their cause anymore..help me find my cause in this time of strife. Only one does it with the Canticle and the other with tankards of Ale.

I did all his buddy buddy missions, saved the chargers, talked to Krem and got all the way through the line. For his part he just said "Dont worry about me Boss, this is where I want to be" and protected Krem like he was a fresh chick who couldn't feed himself.

Cass and he basically are doing the same thing, they can not make sense of who they want to serve so they serve something else while they figure it out because neither would be anything without something else to serve.

That being said, its only my opinion and merits very little in the grand scheme of things.

My game has been very buggy (alas) but today, twice within 2 hours, after over 110 hours of gameplay with no such previous occurrence, I had spontaneous banter while out and about, where I could actually reply to the banter and participate.  THAT was so great!   It helped me feel like I was actually out having a conversation which I didn't START the conversation.  I find that casual banter-witnessing or participating (!) helps give the impression that we are closer than just people we talk to only once in a blue moon when we return to Skyhold.   When it is so often YOU that has to run up to someone to make them talk to you?  Not as good (though it is understandable!) Some of the characters seem to be fleshed out a lot more than others, and a few I find personally unlikeable (which is usually a sign of a strong character, because they make you care, or not!) but one thing I do miss is being able to approach the companions for insight and such outside of quests.  It just made them feel more real in some way.

Well, the reason why you are probably not hearing all that much from the companions while in the field, is a bug that is messing with the party banter. According to gaming articles, Bioware is fixing it in secret shhhh. Lol

I love all the companions, even the people I was predetermined to go in disliking, Dorian/Vivi/Blackwall.  I like running around Skyhold to talk to them, I hated when I accidentally talked to them in the field in Origins, because it usually happened when I was trying to loot something, but liked the camp, and I really hated how spread out they were in DA2.

I will say they could of changed up where Cullen and Lelianna are though, I keep forgetting to go talk to them, especially Cullen

Wow, I personally think the characters are fantastic this time around.  The only one I haven't really warmed to yet is Cole, but I've always had a problem with characters who use stilted-sentences in their speech.  It's probably why I never cared too much for Thane...those flashbacks of his just sounded like a grocery list of ideas someone meant to write.

I think the companions in this game have much less of a sense of camaraderie with each other and the Inquisitor, which is why some people are perceiving them as boring. This might be due to the banter bug, or the massiveness of Skyhold which kind of isolates the companions from each other outside of a few cutscenes.

Out of all of the DA games DA2 had the best interactions between companions and was best with giving each companion their own life outside of being party members.

I love the companions in this one actually.  I never talked to the old ones while out in the field except by accident.  Never wanted to.  The cast in Origins is still my favorite, but Inquisition's beats DA2's hands down.  I am running with Iron Bull, Blackwall, and Dorian.  They have a lot of fun banters.  Dorian can't seem to get it through his head that Bull doesn't give a frig about him Tevinter, but Dorian keeps pestering him about it.  Blackwall likes to harass him about something else that would be a spoiler to mention.

My other playthrough was with Varric, Cassandra, and Cole.  Varric and Cass especially have a lot of fun banter.  Personally, I think those two are secretly a little sweet on one another.  :P

Run Bull and Vivi for awhile, it's hilariously awesome

I thought the companions were very well done.

Definitely deeper and not so stereotyped as DA2 companions.

That said, the story and the way the companions were presented failed to grasp me.

Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana... I care so much for every one of them, they were deep and complex and (importantly) they were presented to you the right way, you got to know them gradually, befriend them, romance them, influence their world view - yet if you go too far some turn against you because they have certain core beliefs etc.

DA:I companions just feel like they're your companions because... Why not?

Sera and Vivienne's joining was very weak (sup, I wanna join, because... joining), Solas and Varric's introduction felt like very rushed.

I liked Dorian and Cole - their introduction (depending on which path you took) was much better done.

Ironbull - same thing, weak introduction. But had good interactions with other NPCs, found him interesting. Head like a f*****g triangle though.

Blackwall's secret was perhaps the thing that got to me most - even though, again, the presentation was lacking.

I even did the Cass romance just to see it. And it felt weak, contrived and unnatural.

I did Leliana/Morrigan romances in DA:O because I genuinely wanted to, and they all felt like they had proper depth to them and a natural development.

Here, it's just like... LOL HEART ICON, your character throws a flirty comment, and that's it.

Then do one short quest and you're good.

I'm sure that a lot of people felt connected with DA:I companions.

I, personally, did not.

Even if I thought the companions were well done, the game did a lousy job of presenting them and their motivations.

I think they're my favourite bunch of companions (and advisors!) in a BioWare game, ever. Even the ones I'd been neutral about in previous games - Cullen and Leliana - won me over this time around.

Nope. All companions range from "love to loathe" to "love to love" pretty much. :P

This. Best companions in a bioware game to date, they're more realistically written and expressive.

Companions in Inquisition are all disposable uninteresting dog meat.

Has anyone watched their character laugh yet?  It looks like a ventriloquists dummy.   :)
