You're probably right it just feels that way as you can't speak to them while exploring, minus the gifts too.
You miss the silly gift mechanic? What?
I'd rather go kill Darkspawn with Blackwall!

If you're not affect by the banter bug and actually get party banter, you'll see them change/grow a lot throughout the story. Banter also feels less repetitive compared to DA:O where I was tempted to throttle Leliana whenever her shoe banter showed up or Alistair/Wynne with the sock topic...
They should have allowed for more interaction after the main plot though.
On the contrary, I care more about my companions in Inquisition more than Origin and DA2... not as much as ME but maybe future expansions (if any) will change that.
As a group, these are my second favorite companions in the series. Individually, though, it has my three favorite companions so far: Varric, Cassandra, and Cole. Cassandra, especially, I can't say enough about this character.
I like the companions a lot, I just wish we had more interaction with them, that they gave input on quests a lot more often, especially when it's something they should care a lot about (ex: Fenris when you get Orrana, Alistair when you kill Connor, etc...). Plus they need to fix that party banter bug ![]()
I found him very cliche, he and Cass are basically the same entity. Oh woe is me, I am the soldier who does not believe in their cause anymore..help me find my cause in this time of strife. Only one does it with the Canticle and the other with tankards of Ale.
I did all his buddy buddy missions, saved the chargers, talked to Krem and got all the way through the line. For his part he just said "Dont worry about me Boss, this is where I want to be" and protected Krem like he was a fresh chick who couldn't feed himself.
Cass and he basically are doing the same thing, they can not make sense of who they want to serve so they serve something else while they figure it out because neither would be anything without something else to serve.
That being said, its only my opinion and merits very little in the grand scheme of things.
If you make the other choice in that quest, and preserve the Qunari Alliance, it's a very different kettle of fish.

Yeah but that means I have to replay this game and frankly it's not worth the blase combat and story for me to do that. Besides I hate that entire quest line, the Vents are 20 feet from me and I have Fade Step, let me go down there and kill them. Just felt railroady and forced.
I think all the companions are pretty interesting for different reasons, and I try to mix up the party to keep the banter flowing as well. Cole surprisingly grew on me a lot more than I thought, and I understand Vivienne, while I disagree with her.
Though I confess every time I move my romance forward with Solas, I keep thinking "You're gonna Anders me, aren't you?"....He's just got that "I've got a really CRAZY seekrit hidden under this polite woobieness" vibe.
I hate men. ![]()

Your choice, but my point is that there is a different road to go with him.

Not really sure where this critique is coming from. You couldn't speak to any of the DA2 companions while out in the field, either.
In fact, you couldn't speak to any of them at all, unless they had a quest.
Personally, like with the game in its entire, I find the companions much, much more immersive and fleshed out. My character is talking to actual people, not walking codex entries.
The only thing I miss (could be I actually literally missed it, and if I did, feel free to point it out), is companions interacting with other companions outside of banter. I know Iron Bull and Dorian hook up when neither is in a romantic relationship with the Herald, but other than those two, it kind of feels like the only thing companions have in common with each other is the Herald. It feels like they're isolated from each other. Varric and Cassandra interaction aside, of course.
But even taking the above point in mind, DA:I's companions are by far my favourite bunch of companions from the Dragon Age franchise so far.

Dorian and Cullen play games together. Iron Bull uses Cassandra and Krem for help with his training, or emotional issues, or whatever the hell his deal is. There are others I can't think of. It's actually not that uncommon to encounter companions interacting.
OMG, yes! My thoughts exactly!!! I didn't romance Anders (wanted to but hated it right away and switched, lucky me).Though I confess every time I move my romance forward with Solas, I keep thinking "You're gonna Anders me, aren't you?"....He's just got that "I've got a really CRAZY seekrit hidden under this polite woobieness" vibe.

So simple tough luck on my end, then. I'm really glad this is actually implemented.
Thank you for notifying! I'll see if I have better luck with a next playthrough.
Following the DA Facebook page and seeing this game develop in "who would you rather" picture quizzes and whatnot, I sincerely thought I wasn't going to care for a single npc in this game outside of Cole because I have the book, and Cullen because of his history.
Approaching endgame on my first playthrough now, I can happily say that I was terribly mistaken. I do care about 99 percent of them and am looking forward to trying out the other romance options for my playstyle to see if anyone can beat what Cullen had to offer - a challenge to be sure. In that regard, I can say that it is pretty much the equal of the other two games in the series, because I cared for all but one of the companions each time.
But that one! Grr...
For this game, that honor goes to Sera. I guess its a testament to the writing that she can be beloved by some and so despised by others. For me, she will almost certainly go the way of Isabella, who I left standing at the bar in every playthrough after my first in DA2. For Origins it was Leliana, but she didn't bother me half as much as the other two and I didn't actually mind letting her come along. For her I felt indifference at best, but I have to say my opinion of her has improved a great deal thanks to this game.

Play around with which companions you decide to bring with you
to get some different results.

Sera's an interesting character. I don't much care for her and I kinda wish I'd rejected her rather than recruited her based on how she presented. But she's a fairly unique character amongst non-villains in BioWare games.
I really liked the companions and advisors and consider them to be a great cast, that being said all of them could've done with more interaction and content. There just wasn't enough of it for a game that size which often left me feeling like their story and romance arcs/quests/plights were resolved too quickly. A good example being Cullen's lyrium withdrawal and his story arc surrounding that one issue, it was solved in 3 scenes and maybe 2 brief mentions (once at the war table and once after the sex scene if you romanced him). It could've done with being an issue for longer, let it build up throughout the game from the outset via little hints in his behaviour or whatever until eventually you get the scene where he flips his sh*t and throws his lyrium making kit across the room etc.
I never got the desire to have a conversation in the middle of the streets of Denerim about Morrigan's abilities to shapeshift.
Or have Leliana tell me about the knight Aveline while in the Deep Roads.
There are a few places in the field where you can converse with companions but they appear tied to the plot. For example in Cassandra's Seeker quest she will initiate a chat while you're running along and your quizzy is given some options to respond with and these are not cinematic scenes either. So the ability is probably there for BioWare to do more of this in the future. But the scale of doing that sort of thing is pretty immense and might add more time to game development.

This. Plus:
Varric helps Cole with his humanity and protects him like a younger brother.
Sera takes you to prank the advisors and Josephine reacts to it.
Vivienne cant stand Cassandra. But acts like she "absolutely adore you my dear, you did such a nice job outfitting the Inquisition (not!!!)"
Leliana is always "butt-ing" in with comments when your talking to Josephine in her office, clearly seeing what a great friendship they have.
Cant recall an exact moment, but just as Leliana and Josie have a special bond, there's also one between Cass and Cullen as in "brother's in arms" "tough enough to do whats right" bond.
There's quite a lot of companions interaction. Some of it you can see in cutscenes of each companion (i mean Wiked Grace game.... man have you ever seen such a bonding scene between companions in any dragon age game?? its amazing!) but most of it actually comes from party banter. Iron Bull practices moves with Sera and Varric "on the field" while you are killing bad guys! How can you be left wanting for more... I think its good, innit?
