Why won't ranged keep their distance?

All my ranged party members insist on running up to blast the monsters at point blank range. Do they need corrective eye-wear? Is there a crafting pattern for eye glasses? I haven't seen one, and I've actually looked.

No matter what I do in the tactical view,  they run up to attack at point blank range. Its like trying to train a really really dumb dog. Sit. Stay. No. Stay. Sit. Stay. No. Stay. SIT! STAY!!!

It turns what should be a tactically challenging boss fight to a health potion guzzling competition.

Is this a bug or feature? If its a bug, its it fixable? Or am I not doing it right?

Should I just respec Bull into a sword and shield tank and play with three tanks?

Its really frustrating at times.

They likely don't have line of sight where they are standing. If any of their attacks get blocked by terrain they basically run straight for the mob until they have clear line of sight.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give that a try.  I've seen them run up to blast stuff point blank in open fields in Hinterlands. The frostback fight is a prime example. I think mages do it more than rogues.

Sadly the AI in this game seems made to frustrate you and have you micromanage. =/

Are you sure they aren't getting dragged in by the Dragon when it beats its wings?

Disable any meter attacks, set escapes like fade step or leaping shots to preferred. It works pretty well, not perfect, but it's decent

I hate it when Frostback does that attack. I assure you it is considerably more frequent than that.

Haven't tested it yet but setting your AI to Defend themselves in the AI Behaviours is alledged to stop them running into the front lines.

As someone else said, even with all AI turned off, your companions will still try to regain line of sight, which is a mistake in my opinion. It's especially bad because they can lose line of sight over something as dumb like a knee-high rock.

Don't set your ranged to Follow anyone other than another ranged character. That solved all my issues.

I get a similar problem, especially with Sera inching closer to the enemies one step at a time between shots. For me the "Hold" command usually works, but only until you issue any other order. What you do is issue the order to attack a target, and then hit the "Hold" command. The problem is that this command is party-wide and can't be given to one single member individually. It is really cheap and poor from Bioware to not have added the option to issue this command individually to each party member, really.

Anyway, when you hit "H" (or click "Hold" command in the action bar) every member of the party will hold their position, and attack from it if they are able, if they are not they just stand there in waiting. That means that other members that you need to be more mobile, like for example your tank, need to be given another order to cancel out the "Hold" individually while keeping it enabled your ranged DPS.

As soon as you order a member under "Hold" to move or even change target, they won't be under the "Hold" command anymore, so you need to reapply it if you want them to stand still again.

It's quite annoying and tedious, but it's the only workaround I know of that really works.

You can have them hold position individually in tac cam, but it only lasts as long as you're IN tac cam.  If you click once to move them and then click that spot again it's a hold.

Yeah, but that's in theory... it works with my mage alright, but Sera keeps doing the "inching" even after double clicking the destination, with the "Shield" symbol appearing on the ground.

I don't know, might be a bug I'm getting alone since I haven't seen anyone else complaining for it, but the only way I've found to really pin Sera in a good sniping spot is via the party-wide Hold command.

Oh, huh.  That's a weird bug.  I'll have to try that out tonight; I haven't noticed it, but haven't been watching her.

A.I. for Artificial Idiots amirite?

In all seriousness, now that I do a mixture of action cam and tactical cam, I'm getting some great results.

A good tip for positioning your companions is to click in the location you want them to move to, then click again a second time. The location will suddenly glow gold and the action on the party ui will state hold position. The character will run to this location and attack from there. Some things do still cancel out that order, but it works more often than not.

I don't struggle too much with my party.. but that's because I have idiot proofed it. I am not relying on the AI to do anything. If something, by the love of all that is holy, gets frozen by Solas(He favors freezing things with barrier and guard.. /facepalm) -- I shatter it myself. I use quick commands to get my tank to attack stuff. I use tact cam to get Solas and Varric from going all melee-ranged-suicidal on me.

Basically, we don't got an AI. We got some random people doing random things at random times. Instead of relying on my party, I just use them for what they are. I would never build a team setup that relies on an AI performing. That would.. hurt.

I've completely disabled the AI at this point. I have some dummies following me and autoattacking what I tell them to, that's it.

If it's a tough fight I'll issue orders and skills manually, I can live with it.

Example of lovely AI:

I am fighting Ferelden Frostback on Nightmare, pre-Skyhold at level 12. (Completionist.. I know.. sue me!). Everything is fine until he flaps his wing. I bring everybody inside before any damage is done. Varric ROLLS out(With Evade) - twice! and Solas Fade Step out. Both dies, but not after chugging 5 of my 8 potions. /sigh
