Perhaps, but the explanation in-game says they will use enabled abilities intelligently. They... don't.

I really got a lot of satisfaction designing my tactics setups to devastating effect. I am sure a lot of players stuck with the presets. I would have liked to be listening in on the discussion about removing them for DA:I...

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. You just have to observe for a bit and learn what to enable, disable, and what to set on preferred.

I agree that finely tuning your tactics in Origins and DA2 then seeing it in action was pretty satisfying and even though I'm not having much trouble in my NM playthrough (dagger rogue, with as little pausing as I can get away with) with the way the AI is now, there's always a bit of uncertainty that comes from not knowing exactly how and when skills are going to be used. Having said that though, it is possible to lessen some of that uncertainty by correctly setting up follow/defense behaviors in conjunction with preferred abilities.

Would it be impossible to patch in the tactics menu from the old game? That would not only solve the problem of dumb AI but make the combat 10x more fun.

Nothing is impossible, but that is something that has no chance of happening.

Any advice on follow/defend? Because it seems to me if guys on defend don't attack unless something is attacking the character they are defending, everyone needs to be on follow.

I do not like the whole enable/disable abilities thing... If I didn't want someone using an ability, I wouldn't have unlocked it. I just wanted it to be used properly.

Who knows how the AI script works in this game? It might not allow for such fine tuning.

Varric always had that issue,,, even in stupid DA2.

Actually playing on nightmare with a DW rogue, and i still see that Raven does all the work while her companions fell like flies unless i micromanage them. But no complain here, we all asked for that and now we got it

WE asked for better tactics

A simple fix.

Change the script to identify ranged characters and then ensure they keep their distance. This fix works for mages and archers.

One significantly helpful change would be  for the tactics to actually be “defend Mage”—not “defend Vivienne” etc.

It would also be nice if Cass would actually attack hostiles, instead of that poor fennec that's just trying to run away....

Are you saying that "defend mage" = the other three doing the defending?

I have Cass follow me and the other two defending Cass.  Cass comes to my aide when I'm surrounded by spawning bears, carta rogues de-cloaking behind me or those long legged demons from the rifts teleporting in front of me. I'm telling you, Cass must love me...

Ahh... now that you mention it, she does get excited about the chase.. running off yonder behind big boulders..

It's only an ai, at the end of the day, so you can't expect too much

The game has automatic default AI and skill assignment, so excuse me for expecting it to produce better results than "Run into melee range die" for the archers. You don't have to include an AI, but in that case just leave the character passive - that way they won't waste potions.

No, I’m saying that I don’t want to manually change Cass from Defend Dorian to Defend Vivienne if I happen to change the party. I might use tactics more. Or not.
