Why do a lot of people hate Sera?

And there is a very visceral reaction to seeing the message 'so and so disapproves' it's a very clear 'word from on high' way of letting you know a character's feelings. Had it been 'Javick disapproves' every time you reached out to a character would we think differently of him?

She's just the sort of character that rubs a lot of people the wrong way. She's immature, racist, self-loathing when it comes to her race and she doesn't really learn from her mistakes nor does she often admit to making them in the first place. She's interesting in her own way, of course, but not enough for me to invest in taking her alongside my character on his adventures throughout Thedas.

*sigh* Okay, I have an exam, so could someone else explain why this isn't true?, racist, self-loathing when it comes to her race

I'll admit, I'm biased - I simply detest elves that don't act like elves. She doesn't seem to approve of anything resembling a culture for her people and simply acts like a low-life human instead. Dragon Age's elves don't do much for me, mind you - I tend to prefer the taller, more muscular elves in various other settings where they're still a dominant force rather than a shattered and broken race.

That makes me wonder: How would players have experienced a world where pretty much everything was elven-centric, from status to religion with a world where humans was servants and less?
I think it would have added some nice and revealing perspectives at least.
Also, for each new character I make do I so wonder what happens to the servant that get so anxious when my character wakes up. Poor girl/woman, wish I could have done something for her, given her some of my power points and whatnot, she seems terribly low on that stuff.

Racist? Nah, she has a fear(legitimate) of magic and that realm. I find her a lot much more interesting than Blackwall. Especially her and Bull with Cass in a group is funny.

Somewhat like Morrowind, i guess.

What upset me is how selfish she is. The guy in Crestwood gets killed because she fails to protect her informants, yet after I let her kill the noble she's all boasting in the tavern about how good it was instead of the fact that her little games got an innocent guy killed. And when you point it out that she made a mistake or had some fault, she gets belligerent and plain nasty.

Considering the discussion in this thread has addressed Sera's issue with elven culture, her disapproval of the elven option when becoming Inquisitor (while having no problem with the other racial options, or even the mage option), breaking up with the elven Inquisitor if she expresses that she believes in the elven gods, or her problem with Briala (who she knows next to nothing about) or her disapproval for helping Briala empower the Orlesian elves and give them rights, I think it's apparent that Sera does have an issue with elves, and likely with herself as an elf.

Part of me suspects that things might be different if Sera were a male character, but it's hard to tell, because I can't recall a character that required as much effort to work around as she does.
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I find Solas to be quite difficult; more so than Sera. I just find him to be constantly disdainful and condescending, which seem to be similar to the reasons sometimes given for why others aren't so keen on Sera. I guess I also had the same thing with Anders mk. II. Unfortunately, I haven't really paid enough attention to know if they were similarly contentious.

I have a love/hate relationship with Sera. I love her jokes, the way she can be so free-spirited at times and just not give a **** about what it is the nobles want. She doesn't think she's is above anyone, and doesn't believe that anyone is worth more than another. When we ran around the keep just pulling pranks on people, or when we sat on the roof to eat a cookie, I thought 'damn, this is like what I would want to do with a friend if I lived in Thedas'.
I hate her because I can't convince her to to think more critically about magic or elves. It can be infuriating to watch her continue to swear allegiance to being a Chantry/Andrastian believer when you can show her such convincing evidence (like bloody everything in the Temple of Mythal), and she just disregards it as be
ing evil and demony.
But, I think that's the point with Sera; she's not supposed to be someone who the PC can change. She's meant to be this awesome, amazing, close-minded ******. Not everyone in the world is going to (or should be) simply switch their mindsets to what we like because we think that it's better. How boring would it be if she would just bow down to whatever we said because we think that it's right? It wouldn't make sense for her character; she's stubborn as hell, and completely free-spirited. No one can tell Sera how to live her life except Sera.
I can see how some people might say that that's 'a lack of character development', but I would say that it is staying true to her core values, and I think the writing team (Lukas) did a brilliant job with her.

After a few playthroughs, I've come to really enjoy her character . . . but I still like complaining about her. She's the only companion I've come across that invokes conflicting emotions from me. She's adorable at times and such a swell little character, but a lot of the time the things she says and does are so irksome. I'm enjoying my unique response to her.

With Solas, I found this became apparent gradually as you listen to his banter.

There was one bit with Blackwall that I did enjoy. He may ask Solas if he ever did anything sexual in nature with spirits, which was a question that Sera first posed (even better if Sera is in the party at the time). I like how Solas got offended at the question.

I thought it was obvious why she disliked Briala, she mostly cares about getting power for herself, wants to raise elves up only, & will happily sacrifice peoples lives to make her ambitions happen

My elf asked him before either of them. So I found it hilarious how he treats people he disapproves of compared to the ones he wants to DreamBang *no disrespect meant to Solas, but for all his understanding he disapproves of a relationship with Sera and fails to relate to someone who isn't Dalish*
But more about Sera, please.

Oh 70 pages on sera lol.

A sign of a well done character!
It's just like that prince dude in Game of Throne (His name escapes me..). Everybody ends up wanting to strangle the fucker -- which means the character and actor did a splendid job with him. Though I wouldn't like being the actor. He ought to get **** on a lot!
Sera is a love/hate kind of character. She got many, many, flaws. Her way of speaking, her way of acting, her looks her.. everything. Some find these amusing, some annoying. I won't go as far as say that she got any sort of depth: She is a rather flat in that departement, but she is interesting.
What can I say. I hate Sera, but at least it is better than bloody Clou-- I mean, Fenris in DA II.

I don't hate her. I actually really liked the talk you have with her just after you get Skyhold: "A seat needs a butt..."
Quizzy: "Just... be useful. Ugh... the people I have to work with."
Sera: "I know right? But I'll be here! Now where is food!?!"

Robert, you seem to have a rather nasty habit of putting forth your assumptions as facts; you might want to do something about that, particularly when you're pretending to know what a real person is thinking. You don't know me. Don't pretend as though you do.
You also seem to need a refresher on what I actually said. I said before I find it rather disgusting that Sera breaks up with the elven Inquisitor for saying that she believes in the elven gods, after the two of them have been together for quite some time, near the end of the story.
So you're not bitter, but disgusted that she can stick to her own beliefs over what you think she should do? Despite knowing that more wars are fought over the same idea than for any other reason?
So neither of these:
: causing painful emotions : felt or experienced in a strong and unpleasant way
: angry and unhappy because of unfair treatment
fits the tirade you're on? So you don't see it as unfair that she can do that? Then why are you blowing up this thread with claims to the contrary? Why does it disgust you, if you think it's acceptable? I not only find it acceptable, I also understand it. I am not, however, going to backtrack the thread to point out the hypocrisy of your assault on my character. This quote suffices to show that it's not my issue here, but your own.
Let me summarize this post for you, in English:
"Rob, you're an *******.
I'm not bitter about what she does; (insert rage about what she does)."
That's this quote in a nutshell. Go ahead, tell me again how I'm making assumptions based on what you say. I cannot make a blind assumption about your meaning when you state it plainly. I did not misinterpret what you said to fit my points/counter points. I'm not making assumptions about Sera's motivations, she makes it plain through out the game, both in dialog and through the approval system(for better or worse, it's there). The flaw here, if there is one, is assuming that in order for her to be "good" she has to blindly accept whatever the Inquisitor does because "player agency". The party members are each their own "person". If you push them too far, they can break up with you, just like people in real life. I haven't hit the crisis point with any of them, so far. Although my Dalish Mage will, deliberately, so that I can see that side of her character in game, instead of on youtube. Because, believe it or not, I find that that makes her more "real" as a character.
