Like it or not, Sera is one of the more divisive characters in this game. She, and Vivienne probably, are the only characters who can have topics made about them as to why so many people hate them.

And this is a board discussing this game and not any others.

Of course.

I wouldn't say they are the only characters, but they are definitely the most obvious ones.

Sorry, obvious one.  After all, where is the shall-never-die Vivi hate thread?

But never mind. Move on to the next screen.

Sera is kind of an interesting one. As a player who strictly plays mages and the like I was kind of... disappointed when the adorable girl I just met was kind of xenophobic. I of course appreciated and loved her punk rock spirit, but her distrust of spirits and anything magical but me in an interesting position since I wanted to romance her. I did romance her, and it kind of says something I think. She isn't close minded, she's scared. I mean think about it, the public perception of magic is all blood magic, demons and mass destruction. A while rebellion with a bunch of innocence (the people she cares about most) get hurt with little regard for their well being. You can't blame her fear of such things. She does however warm up to magic if you are a mage, and I completely encourage her lack of wanting to be, "elfy," even though I played an elf (something she warms up to as well).

However my major problem with her is her readiness and wanting to kill anyone and everyone she believes is a bad person. I haven't killed one person I put to judgement. I play non lethal in the Deus Ex games even. Killing is a no go for me. I still adore her though. I'm sure she would come to understand why killing is wrong and why magic isn't scary. I would love to see a DLC explore her hinted at magic abilities and maybe create a decision for her to eventually warm up to and choose to explore her magic. Maybe she becomes some kind of DA equivalent to an arcane trickster, but with a bow? I dunno. I'm rabbling and it's 7 am and I have not slept yet.

More Sera in future DA games!!!!?????? Perish the thought.

DLC with Sera? Can the murder knife make an appearance?

While we're at it, can we murder knife Vivienne and possibly Anders if he survived DA2?

I think if we started up a hate thread for Viv, it would die pretty quick because most people would be in complete agreeance that she's a nasty piece of work. Don't get me wrong, i'm sure a few might stick up for her, but it's hard to argue for someone who's such an obvious power-grubbing b*tch.

I still like her in the sense that I'm entertained. It has nothing to do with agreeing with her though. And her power grabbing antics are mysterious until later.

The only character I'm negative about is Bull, and mostly because I don't understand him..he's all over the place. And recruiting on my Circle mage doesn't make sense. It's like he's only there for an entirely different class/race combo. Too niche for me.

I really wish Sera was a square-jawed black woman who likes blowing up churches, insists on being your friend and cannot be killed on Virmire.

For science.

The insisting on being my friend would already bring my annoyance up to eleven.

But Virmire? Does that mean she'd take Ashley's place?

Sera is easy to like if you spend as little time with her as possible.  I liked her cutscenes.  I thought her reactions to things were very much in-line with what the common folk would feel.  She and my Inquisitor became good friends.  The problem is, once you start taking her in your party, you begin to see just how bad she can be.  How she treated Solas was downright despicable.  So I just never take her anywhere and instead eat cookies on the roof with her.

Exactly what I do.  Friends, but not really adventuring buddies much.  For me she is racist, rude and obnoxious, but sometimes is funny.

Solas doesn't treat her any better, of course, and is as, if not more, prejudiced against her. He's very snobby about elfy elf stuff and never changes his opinions on that.

Sera constantly tries to get a rise out of him; whereas Solas tries to force her into accepting her supposed heritage, simply because he thinks she is lacking it in her life. I think she almost has a parental relationship with Solas. Neither treats the other one -as a person- bad the way I see it.

Again, I think Sera shakes up companion interaction by a great deal.

She isn't a downright villaneous (DAO Morrigan, Juhani) character that you can "change", as much she isn't a universally likeable character whose worst offence to some is to be boring or a pushover (Alistair, Bethany, Jacob). Sera stays with her ways yet evolves further on them, rather than abandoning - being a rebel for the people is a two way street.

During my latest playthrough I decided to take Solas more often and give the fella a chance. Not only has he grown on me, but there are a lot of shocking similarities.. but at the same time, polar opposites.

About Sera? He does tell her at one point that "you and I are more alike than you think".

Sera and Solas are a real treat to listen to in the party, I'll agree.

That's all I have left to say in this topic. I don't like Seras abrasive personality, inability to see the big picture, and antipathy toward anyone that doesn't fit into her personally approved categories.

But that's just my opinion and I understand that people like her trickster tendencies, her care towards the common people, and the fact that she does not change to suit the player.

I don't want to get dragged in or drag anyone into anymore of the endless circle of a debate this topic already is. So having said my piece I bide this thread and her fans good luck and thanks for debating with me even if we don't see eye-to-eye.

This holds true for a lot of the companions, save Varric in my case, since I don't see the need to take two rogues, possibly 3, depending on the Inquisitor of the hour. From banter alone, I know that Cass has a soft spot for her, and banter between her and Dorian is hilarious, especially the Magister Laugh dialog.

A lot of players hate Sera because she fights for people and represents them. She is scared of magic? Yes. She has something against Dalish? Yes. She is afraid that Maker stuff might not be all true? Yes. She is afraid of demons? Yup. She hates nobles? Hell yeah! She is all that NPCs would tell you if BioWare had far more money and time. Sure, I don't like her but I don't hate her because I understand. There are characters that make me far more don't like them. Wynne, Alistair, Anders, Isabela, Fenris (and I'm templars supporter), Cole, Solas, Blackwall... And I still like them a little, as I do with Sera (well, still can't like Alistair, welp). Sera is character we needed. Lesbians and elves were praised in fandom then one spawned and made some chaos. Isn't that great? If you like all characters in game, it was made poorly. You need all the feelings for good RPG. As Cassandra told once. Deal. With. It.

I swear, you hear more elven cuss words, elven curse words, and elven swear words than the rest of the entire elven language we hear in DAO and DA2 combined... Whenever you bring both of them and they start talking to each other.

Actually one thing that sort of stood out to me is that at one point Solas uses what appears to be a Tevinter swear word when talking to Sera. Both Calpernia and Fenris also use it. So likely either the writers forgot which made up language that phrase belonged to or the Imperium ended up assimilating that expression somehow.

Would not be surprising, Tevinter seems to have basically formed itself as copy of ancient elven society. A lot of SJW's talk about cultural appropriation like it's a huge deal, but Tevinter is what happens when it is actually done for real. They took pretty much everything, erased the elves own knowledge so elves couldn't get it back, and then pretended like it was theirs all along. Disgusting.

Another reason why Tevinter sucks.

Cultural plagiarism.

I love humorous npc's but she is just to immature for my taste. Her timing with jokes is terrible and her punchlines are mediocre at best. Much prefer my party of dorian, bull, and varric. Their humor is more my taste

I agree with this. And she is just very high on her own opinions. Like she is slamming on the dalish all the times and claiming people being to elfy etc but she is just the same herself, just towards her own opinions and she is super intolerant towards everyone else, and her snickering. ew. I prefer Dorian, bull and varric aswell, or even funny snarky remarks from my beloved solas :D

I feel bad for participating in this necro (), but I just want to point out that this is likely true? Danarius used the name Fenris for its Tevene meaning, "little wolf." And since we know that the Fen in Fen'Harel means wolf, I'm pretty sure it's just another linguistic artifact cribbed from the elves. Like a loan word.

Most translations of "fenedhis" have it mean something akin to, ah, wolf crap or wolf...genitalia. Solas, Dorian, and Fenris all use it.

I have tried to accept Sera's character for what it is. She is mischievous, talks in riddles, and doesn't seem to care about much besides having fun. I don't hate her, but I don't share her outlook on many things. I like to bring her along when I take Solas with me so she can tease him c;

...I also really like playing dress-up with her ;-;
