If you had to build a S&B DPS Warrior...

How would you go about doing it? Or perhaps you think it's just not worth it?

If you're curious, the reason I'm interested in playing a Sword and Shield DPS is that I enjoy detonating combos, my 2H Warrior is stuck with the 1 damage detonations bug, and I've no way of knowing when, if ever, that bug will be fixed.

My naive plan is to use 2 mages and a rogue to set up combos, then Shield Bash + Lunge and Slash to detonate. My warrior would "sort of tank" when necessary, but primarily detonate combos.

Edit: Well, bad news for me. It seems like Shield Bash also sporadically gets the 1 damage Shatter combo bug. Meaning that the only reliable Warrior combo detonator is Lunge and Slash.

DPS .. the problem I see here is that if s/he gonna be your only warrior/tank s/he probably cannot be DPS primarily as s/he will need to grab aggro and tank also. Aggressive, mobile, hard hitting S&B I can imagine but DPS in the traditional sense, I do not know. The idea about detonating comobs is right on the money though.

I would go Reaver for the passives only and rely on Lunge and Slash and Payback Strike for damage and detonations. Stack Masterwork Hidden Blades (4 hits and 5 hits can stack, same tier will not stack) and either Walking Bomb (more damage) or Shield Bash (more detonations) for the 3rd enchant. Add in a rogue for sundering (via the passive that triggers on crit) and a mage with improved Ice Mine for the 100% armor reduction. Also grab Horn of Valor.

That's all I can think of right now.

Right, so as some have suggested, it's a challenge to pull off doing both damage and tanking. I've played around having a dedicated tank or a dedicated spirit CC mage. A dedicated tank works better but then you have 2 shield warriors, which is kind of... odd... so I've been trying to make one of the companion Warriors into a dedicated 2H tank while I provide some off-tanking.

The good part: I will say that using Sword and Shield for damage is surprisingly fun. Basically I zip around the field using upgraded Lunge and Slash, Charging Bull, and even upgraded Shield Bash to an extent. When I'm near a group, I use War Cry and either run to another enemy -- basically kiting the melee opponents -- or use Payback Strike to knock them down. With 2 abilities causing detonations you feel like a more mobile, more sturdy, less damaging melee Rogue.

With all the damage abilities having low seconds CDs, I never feel like I have to throw more than a few auto-attacks before I get to do something fun. Haven't decided what specialization I'll go with yet, both Reaver and Templar have their appeal.

SnB DPS warrior is certainly viable. Highest two hand AND one hand dps I've seen has been in the 250-350 range. Meaning the ONLY thing a 2H grants that 1H doesent have - is AOE (I think).

Anyway, for build. You want to make a reaver with upgraded horn of valor + deep reserves + the one that gives you stamina when hurt. You might also want the reduced CD on crit, and focus on crit.

Gear: % heal, +stamina, horn of valor duration, crit chance.

Its not the only difference. Even though dps may be equal, 2 hand weapons have a higher basedamage with a slower attackspeed. But all your skills scale from weapondamage and not from their dps. Which means 2 handskills hit a lot harder than 1 handskills. But if you just use autoattacks to inflict damage, your statement holds true.

And that's why two handed Reavers are so much fun, Dragon Rage doesn't care two handers are supposed to swing slower.

Being a combo fiend, I think I'll stop playing a warrior till there's a patch.

It's hard to say. There are many combinations.

I can give you an example of a Sword & Shield Warrior that really kicks ass.

I do not play as this warrior my self. It is how I build up my Cassandra Pentaghast. She is practically invincible. She has not died on me one single time. Last night she practically took out a dragon singlehanded (Storm Coast: Vinsomer, level 19).

But maybe you can use some of this to build up your character?
Have in mind that the game AI controls her. I don't know how well you are able to use the best combos and settings your self.

Cassandra Pentaghast, at level 20:

Weapons & Shield: All slots filled
Battle Master: all the remaining points

Armor:
* Vigorous Freezing Battlemaster Mail  (custom made, armor rating: 253)
+ 14% Cold Resistance
+ 18% Magic Defense
+ 240 Maximum Health
Heal 25% of damage taken over 10 seconds
(Absorbing Vigorous Vanguard Arms)
(Vigorous Vanguard Legs)

Helmet:
Curse Of Morrac (rare)
+ 6 Cunning
+ 6 Dexterity

Shield:
* March Of The Everlasting (unique shield)
29 Armor Rating Front
+ 30% Front Defense
+ 27% Maximum Health
+ 8% Melee Defense
+ 4 Strength
+ 5% Extra Damage for each enemy within 8 meters

Weapon:
* Flanking Hatchet, 236 DPS (custom made)
126 Damage
+ 32 Damage Vs. Living
+ 9% Armor Penetration
+ 45% Flanking Damage Bonus
On Hit: Heal 1% Of Maximum Health
(Flanking Superb Shaft)
(Master Corrupting Rune)

Jewelry:
* Superb Lifeward Amulet (+ 500 Lifeward Heal) - common ring
* Enhanced Belt Of Health (+ 100 Maximum Health) - rare belt
* Enhanced Earthshocking Strike (ability damage + 30%) - rare ring
* Superb Ring Of Critical Dammage (+ 20% Critical Damage Bonus) - unique ring

Why use this ring for a W&S warrior? It's the final ability in the 2-hand tree (and generally considered bad).

I don't know why. I just use it. I think it raises the percentage maybe?

I was thinking about replacing this with Superb Ring Of Earthshaking (+ 20% Flanking Bonus) but I never did. As long as Cassandra is invincible I don't touch anything.
