Hello BSN, I am almost finished with my 2nd playthrough, Knight Enchanter mage and its time to plan ahead for 3rd playthrough which definitely gonna be a rogue.

My first playthrough was a Human Female Two Handed Warrior Inquisitor who romanced Sera. I choose Reaver specialization and I had Insane burst DPS, it was just crazy.

2nd playthrough I started an Elf, female Mage who romanced Solas, It was on hard and I felt very fragile and weak until I learned Knight enchanter specialization and then I was just unkillable tank, no where near the dps capability of Two handed warrior but extremely durable.

Now my 3rd character is gonna be a rogue and I intend to romance Cassandra this time, so which race should I play? Also I always ran with Sera and archer seems really powerful in inquisition as opposed to origins where they were just useless. Full Draw does crazy damage, I have seen it multiple times crit for over 4k damage regularly. How's DW damage and utility? Never used cole, I am going to be playing at nightmare difficulty this time.

I will mostly be running with My Rogue Inquisitor/Cass/Viv/Bull this time.

I've played through the game twice, both times as DW Rogue (one Assassin, one Tempest).

When you get the proper gear (high damage daggers, with the MANDATORY Hidden Blades proc), you can literally hold down the attack button, use your other hand to drink coffee and on anything but NM, you will just cut through level-appropriate opponents with ridiculous speed and ease.

On Nightmare, you gotta be more careful, but the Hidden Blades proc and certain Assassin/Tempest skills still make it BY FAR the best DPS in the game.

Only issue..? If you don't control your character, he/she WILL die within 3 seconds.

With AI being as dumb as it is in this game, melee characters with no Guard get absolutely destroyed unless you're directing their every single move.

I tried my DD Tempest with Cole (for Assassin's Mark) on NM, it's just not doable. Dude dies instantly.

Yeah I understand, but I literally put +5 guard on hit on every character in my current playthrough and It was just no fun at all, game got too easy. With all weapons and armor made of tier 4 craft materials and tier 3 superb schematics found the game becomes face roll. So I am definitely not gonna use Fade-touched silverite again for companions but only for cassandra this time round to keep things entertaining and challenging.

And yeah it seems DW rogue got lots of love this time around again, as almost 90% of purple weapon drops are daggers. Out of 10 dragons killed, 7 drops a unique dagger that's just insane.

I guess archer is more of a safe approach, especially for NM, with abilities like leaping shot and tempest skill tree (and oh by the way, Thousand cuts is extremely OP focus ability) while also having very good consistent damage.

There are many kinds of unavoidable AoE melee attacks which are impossible to dodge even if you are flanking the enemy, like dragon/giant smashes which I am sure will probably 1 hit a low health rogue without active guard/barrier. But I think its high risk/high reward.

Good thing you can always respec unlike origins.

Archer Artificer Dalish is what i play and it's extremely fun and good with Cass/Solas/Cole on nightmare with ff enabled. It depends of what you like more but you can always switch party members etc.

I have already played Dalish and human. So I am thinking dwarf next. Can dwarves romance cass? Seems a stupid idea to me though if they can.

dw assassin rogue is fun but very painful  to play at the same time on nightmare, so much **** on the ground+360swinging enemies etc

I imagine anyone of the propper gender *can* romance anyone, though - like you said - it seems silly.

Also, like you said, if you want a challenge play the DW Rogue - you are super fragile and will die a lot, but it is a fun class, since you're always moving and always in the fight.  "Hook and Tackle" is a great way to stay on top of running foes and the throwing daggers power (I forget the exact name) is a nice added range attack.  I admit, as my first character, I do get tired of dying all the time, but it is a fun character to play when you're kicking arse. (Admittedly, one of the main reasons I die so much is because I don't keep a good eye on my health when I'm in the midst of an exciting combat; it's easier to watch this with a ranged character.)

Well on nightmare you don't have to think too much about your hp as rogue, you are either alive or dead

Cullen and Solas are race-locked. Cullen only goes for humans and elves, while Solas only goes for elves. The others are open to all races.

I think I will start as DW and will change to archer if it feels too squishy and frustrating. I am already quite familiar with archer tree as I played Sera quite a bit.

For me, the hardest part so far in this game was during the Mage questline, when its only you and Dorian. I being a mage and Dorian a mage too sent into thick of a fight without allowing me to pick talents for him at hard difficulty was frustrating. Kept dying as mages dps is very bad until you get Knight enchanter specialization then it becomes from worse to ok.

I don't want that frustration again with DW rogue :P

That's when you don't play as a rogue, I assume. I've only seen one violet double-dagger, but I do get a lot of staves and 2hand weapons.....

It's true that one needs to move a lot and position the character. DW is rather squishy, but fun to play with. Archer is a 'lazy' one, especially if you're playing with pad.

I have a special thread just to discuss that, not want to repeat here but 6 or 7 out of 10 dragons drop a dagger. Final door that unlocks in Solasan temple after unlocking all other doors in spirit/frost/fire path that requires around 144 total shards gives a purple unique dagger. The final tomb in hissing wastes (Fenriel tomb or something) gives a unique purple dagger. Highland ravager (Level 23 dragon in Emprise du lion, the highest level dragon) gives a dagger.

I have'nt seen a single high level purple bow/mace/sword. There is only 1 viable two-handed weapon that you craft after a quest, called Sulevian's Blade or something. There are only 2 high level staffs that drops from dragon. There is no superior version of T3 schematics for staff, only normal. Need i to go on?

If you complete all regions and do almost everything then you will find out its daggers all over the place.

I'll take your word on that, I'm not that far into game and yet to visit some of the areas, but I've only seen one purple dagger as a chest drop so far.  Must be bad luck and\or wrong places.  :)

I can't believe you're already on your 3rd playthrough! Do you focus only on the main plot? Or play 24 hours a day? :P  I'm 70 hours into my first playthrough and I've been playing every day after work and during weekends.

163 hours so far in the game, i started playing DAI the second it got unlocked in South Korea, which was i think 16th, i have been playing almost 10 hours a day since that, after 1st character i have slowed a bit though but i am no where near stopping. My first character took almost 105 hours, that included almost everything completed, all regions cleared, all fade rifts closed, all shards found, all astriums unlocked, each region main quest completed etc.

Now i have completed next playthrough in almost 55 hours, not as thorough as first playthrough but almost 85% complete, i am getting experienced so i now exactly know where to get best weapon/armor schematics, where each dragon is etc so i am getting faster.

That being said, i have almost cleared 98% of the game, only thing left is Nightmare achievement and to play the game from different class/race/gender perspective.

I have'nt even touched multiplayer yet, i spent over 200 hours in Mass effect 3 multiplayer and i assume it will be the same here when i am completely done with single player :)

There is nothing about luck, purple drops are fixed not random. You will see far more daggers as you will complete grindy quests which takes hours to complete and kill more dragons.

Simply put, almost every high level stuff (end-game) you do will give you a dagger 50% of the time. Let me know when you find a good quality purple bow or one handed weapon for a warrior.

EDIT:
Another thought for DW rogue is to put Fade-touched Silverite in both daggers and armor. That's 15 guard per hit and considering the speed at which dual dagger rogues attack you will have 100+ guard within 5 seconds, basically an unkillable build.

Just unlock skyhold as soon as possible and go Emprise, there's a silverite node near first camp without having to fight enemies, save/reload until you get the fade-touched silverite and t3 superior dagger schematics from tomb in hissing wastes and you got yourself a God Mode killing machine.

Interesting.  I tried DW rogue and found it annoying because the range of daggers was too small. Were you playing with controllers or KB/M? I can give controller a go, because DW rogue is my fav class, and I'd like to be playing it, but I'm not because of silly KB/M controls.

DW was my favorite too in origins but bioware made lots of changes.

I.e. mages were the top dps in origins, in inquisition they are utter useless. Only knight enchanter is viable as you become a walking fortress and can solo anything even dragons at hard difficulty or even Nightmare, takes forever but its possible.

Two-handed warriors were ok in origin, i doubt anything can top its damage output in Inquisition. Reaver is just too much damage output, even without it two-handed is EXTREMELY powerful. The reason Iron Bull has won a permanent spot in my roster everytime but when my inquisitor is two-handed warrior him/her self.

Now everyone remembers what joke archers were in DAO? Pathetic dps, in inquisition they are complete opposite. Sera's damage output is nothing to laugh at and i have seen her kill level 20 dragon with her focus ability fully charged (300%) from 50% health to 0% in normal difficulty. DW maybe good dps but due to lack of healing spells and or lack of guard/barrier they are just not as viable as they were in origins.

I mean we all have seen rogues solo'ing gaxkang the unbound naked in nightmare difficulty, its just not possible in inquisition.

Guess bioware wanted to make weaker builds better and they have done just that.

I'm playing as DW rogue (super fun, btw, as you can't really autopilot and have to constantly maneuver during combat). I just played through the mage storyline last night, and you should know that

Spoiler

Just a helpful hint for your next playthrough!

I think It's more fun to let the ai play the DW Rogue and Two-handed  Warrior so I'm stuck with Archer, Mage or S&S Warrior.
