The root of this problem appears to be the craptastic installer that was shipped with the game. Fortunately the game files on the disk are clearly packaged in RAR files so it is possible to manually extract them to disk and get things up and running.

I had this same problem and after inspecting the Mass Effect 2 folder I found that it was undersized. So I looked at the various RAR files on disk and found that the contents of english.rar from disk 2 were not installed. This was after figuring out why the damned installer couldn't find disk 2, so I assume this was the direct cause.

Solution: Extract contents of english.rar to your Mass Effect 2 installation.

Note that this was my solution because that file did not install, it might be different for other people.

The RAR files on the disk appear to be configured simply enough that one would be able to manually install the game by extracting the appropriate files to the same directory. I hope this helps.

Edit: Note that if you install manually you will also need to run the PhysX installer on disk 1 in the software folder. There is also an installer for the visual C++ runtime and for DirectX.

Edit 2: My Mass Effect 2 folder is 11.4 GB, if yours is not the same then you probably had an installation issue and need to extract a RAR file.

Is your folder that big before or after the DLC?

I'm confused, where are you finding the size of the folder, and where would teh Mass Effect folder be placed?

I installed it to C:/Program Files/Mass Effect 2. Open the Program Files folder and find Mass Effect 2, right-click on it and go to Properties. It will give you the total size of the folder.

If you use a 64-bit OS it will be in Program Files (x86).

since my size is 11.4GB, I'm assuming that means that my issue is not related to yours?

Indeed, everything is installed correctly for you it seems.

It appears inverness's way works.

But this thread has a much easier go about to it, no crashes on "hit any key" too.

I got a similar problem. Wasn't sure if it was the english.rar but I was definitely missing files. My folder was only 9 gbs.

Reinstall seemed to fix it, now the folder is indeed 11.4 gbs.

Not sure if this is related, but the first time around when it asked for the second disc, it ejected the second DVD tray (interestingly enough I had Dragon Age in there). The second time around it actually ejected the tray with disc 1. Though I did take out the disc in the second tray.

If you have a gamepad or something similar connected to and USB, try unplugging it before starting the game.
Thats what fixed it for me.

The same exact thing happened to me!  This installer seems to be quite buggy.

Thanks for the solution, Inverness!  It worked perfectly.

Same thing happened to me, it ejected the other DVD drive and wouldn't take disc 2 in the original install drive.

Thank you very much for the fix. After the 3rd time reinstalling Mass Effect 2 I removed my Dragon Age disk from my second disk tray and Mass Effect 2 finally installed right (I thought it was werid that it was ejecting the wrong disk tray, but I never imagined my Dragon Age disk was the cause for the failed install).

Thanks man that fixed me too. Im at 12 gigs perfect with Zaeed and the crash site DLC.

If it helps the devs I was installing from my first drive, in my second drive was Dragon Age, it ejected DA asking for the second disk for ME2 and wouldnt take it in the first drive so installed the rest from the second. Second drive is a burner but not the first.

After doing what Iverness Moon said it started right up.

My folder is at 11.4gb. I crash everytime I try to dock into Omega. I get about 1 minute into the dialog with the four-eyes guy and then I get the "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working"

Reinstalling worked for me, too.

I have two DVD drives, "d" and "e". I first started the install from the "e" drive, but it insisted the second disk go in the "d" drive (kept opening that one, and wouldn't recognize the disk if it was in "e"). After install, it crashed on startup. I checked the folder and it was only 9.4GB.

Uninstalled, reinstalled, and I can get to the New Game screen at least.

I have the exact same situation. When installing, I had my Dragon Age disc in tray 2 and when the installer wanted disc 2, it popped out the Dragon Age disc.

I got antsy after installing and installed all the DLC only to find the game wouldn't start.

I'm in the process of re-installing right now. Will update with results now that my Dragon Age disc is not in.

/fingers crossed    :)

UPDATE: I can confirm that reinstalling without the Dragon Age disc seemed to fix my issue. Now if only I could login once I get in the game. /sigh

This is precisely the problem I had. Uninstalled, reinstalled WITHOUT Dragon Age in the CD tray, and it worked just fine. Even asked for the second disk to be put into the tray I had the first disk in.
