Thank you very, very, VERY much! Your solution has worked perfectly! I have wasted several hours of doing useless things like updating teh drivers/BIOS, running teh MemTest, disabling/enabling teh antivirus (and other memory-resident programs), etc., was about to repackage teh game and return it for a store credit and buy teh XBox360 version instead...Inverness Moon wrote...

I'll throw myself on the "Thank you, Inverness Moon!" bandwagon. I'm just feeling bad for the people who don't think of checking the forums for this solution.

Same thing happened to me, I even had the Dragon Age CD in my D drive too >.> Anyway, uninstalled ME2 (stupid installer made me uninstall ME1 first EVERY TIME I CLICKED 2), gonna try reinstalling now *fingers crossed*
Seriously, whoever wrote this installer needs to be fired. Oh well, serves me right for buying an EA title on release day.

same thing, had a ME1 disk in tray 1, dragon age origins in tray 2.
tried installing the ME2 in tray 1, but asked me for the second disk in tray 2 (one with DAO disk).
End result was a ME2 folder with 9gigs.
Reinstalled the game with using only tray 2 dvd, and it worls.
Thank you Inverness Moon

Just a reply to add to the choruses already mentioning how flaky the installer is when it comes to multiple DVD drives and wierdly Dragon Age discs.
Reinstalling now without the Dragon Age disc in a drive after being unable to launch the game and also noticing that even with the dlc my installation was well below the 11.4GB standard install.
Edit: Yep this fixed it for me. If you're having problems with the game crashing at launch where you get a black screen and then "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working... blahblahblah" then check that the installation is the correct size which without any DLC is 11.4gb. With all dlc my installation is 12.1gb.

Thank you for posting this solution.
After 3 reinstallations of the ME2 Collectors Edition I checked my Mass Effect 2 folder and found it was 10.1GB in size. Copied over content from english.rar off DVD 2 and then launched the game. No problems at all.
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Intel® Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
2.49 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+ 196.21
SB X-Fi Audio 6.0.1.1347

i can't believe so many people had dragon's age in the other drive. add me to the list. reinstalling with each ME2 dvd in its own drive fixed it. thank you all very much.

I cannot try this solution since my files are not in rar, they are in Steam folder (yes, I got the game by steam).
But I cannot install the bloody game, any other solution you folks can think of?

Join the bandwagon.
Personally I'm thinking of taking the game back and seeing if there is another one that I can get. This is just not worth the trouble (I just extracted the file, it is now at 11.5).

i tried returning today the shop denies responsibility because the game installs they dont take it back unless the CD was structurally damaged to begin with the distributors have absolutely no idea about computers or games then youre pretty much stuck with bioware so called support forums where other users are the tech support or EA customer services where you get a customer satisfaction survey instead of a solution to your problem

Add me too, had the Dragon Age CD in the second drive and the exact same behaviour. Installer dropped DA CD from Drive 2 and it installed only about 9 GB... reinstalled without DA cd in the second drive and all works.
Thanks for the help!

everything worked for after this fix. When i installed the DLC: Collectors' Weapon and Armor, Blood Dragon Armor, Normandy Crash Site (Cerberus Network). Game wouldn't run, looked in the folders and noticed files were deleted. WTF. So re-installing game with "SETUP.EXE" on cd without deleting anything. Let you know tomorrow. I'm slightly drunk & it's 1235am.

Had the 'Mass Effect 2 has stopped working' error.
Fix:
I play ME2 on a notebook w/ a GeForce 7600 Go installed. The moment I began to experiment with newer Geforce drivers I encountered that problem. Finally I 'rolled back' on the nVidia driver version 196.34 and everything works fine again.
I got the driver (including a modified inf file) from laptopvideo2go.com
Still I dont understand why Mass Effect 2 wouldn't work with any newer driver I tried, and I tried half a dozen!
