So who will be the returning companion in DA4? (Noticing a Pattern)

I think Cole is the most likely one. Love Interests would be very difficult, Vivienne wouldn't really have a Reason to go north (whereas Cole doesn't really need a Reason) and Varric was already repeated.

I agree that the LI's would be problematic to a degree, especially the LGBT ones.  They couldn't be LI's again (unless it's an option only for those who didn't pursue it the first time, so they couldn't take the spot of a new LI).  It's ultimately why I don't see Dorian coming back.  If he's back, he can't be an LI again (or at least, he could only be an extra LI for gay guys).  That would mean that we would still need 2 more gay/bisexual guys.  I just don't see them including that many LGBT guys in the "inner circle".  Two seems to be the max and even that small mount seems to 'offend' people.  So I just don't see Dorian or Bull coming back as companions, even though they would both make sense.  Same thing for Sera, then too.  Although, I suspect that three f/f romances would be much more positively received than three m/m romances.  I wonder why......?

I also agree that any of the potential

Spoiler
are out.  So that removes Cass and Vivienne.

Varric is already a returning companion and we've gotten some closure about his past relationship with

Spoiler
, so I think he's out.

Solas has major reasons he's out, revealed after the final battle.

So that only leaves Blackwall and Cole.  I think that Blackwall wouldn't have the same 'sexuality' issue that Bull, Dorian, and Sera have because there could very easily be three straight guys in the party and no one would blink.  In fact, all three games have had three straight male companions (DA: O - Alistair, Oghren, and Loghain; DA 2 - Carver, Varric, and Sebastian; DA: I - Varric, Solas, and Blackwall).  He would just have to be non-romanceable (or, again, an 'extra' one if unromanced prior).  I'm not sure if he would make sense to come back, though.

Cole would be the obvious choice, I guess.  Provided that they want to bring back a companion and they follow some of the patterns that they've done prior.  That being said, Cole is my least favorite current companion, so yuck.  I don't hate him, but I don't care at all about him either.

Well, I don't think

So we've got:

Cassandra

Vivienne

Varric

Solas

Cole

Dorian

Iron Bull

Sera

Blackwall

In my opinion, it could be any of them. It'd be interesting to see Cole again, and it'd make sense given his nature. Scout Harding seems to be popular demand as well. What do you guys think?

It's problematic.  All the remaining companions apart from Cole are romanceable, meaning that I think many people would prefer them to stay with their Inquisitors rather than fight alongside a new protagonist.  As for Cole,

I wonder though, if Cole came back as a LI, it would seem to be due to him becoming a real boy. Couldn't they just twist the story that way for him for the next protagonist?
meaning over x amount of time between events, Cole was spirit then x events outside of play through made him a real boy on his own without the inquisitors influence....i dunno its a stretch and an idea. But the topic of coles lack of being a LI could be rectified in the next game.

I'll throw another vote in for Scout Harding as a companion in the next game please.

I wouldn't mind Krem either.

Harding is the only one that comes to mind as a plausible option.

Never thought about it, but harding will be nice! We've had male dwarves but never female dwarf companion. She's a capable scout leader + fighter. She also seems to be a fan favorite.

If we're gonna have a spirit as a companion I'd rather it NOT be Cole. The spirit of command we bumped into seems lovely.

I would still bet on Dorian if its taking place in Tevinter.  He wants to reform Tevinter and change it for the better and, if they go with a 'Qunari War' plotline it will make sense for him to show up so that he can either fight for his home land and work for change, or just plain work for change.  If they go with the other likely plotline...I have no idea.  But really, even if Dorian leaves the Inquisitor then they can explain its a temporary absence and that he will return, or that he can even be an agent of the Inquisition investigating the problems in the North.  I guess Blackwall could also maybe be a companion.

Maybe they could do a full expansion instead, add Harding and, all advisors as party members, then Use Dorian and Iron Bull to start an all out effort to capture Tevinter to settle the mage/templar war once and for all. The Inquisition and, the Chantry it controls become the new Emperium, with our Inquisitor at the helm of course.

Not saying I want a returning companion, I don't actually, but look at this:

DA:A - Oghren returned from Origins

DA2 - Anders returned from Awakening

DA:I - Varric returned from DA2

Each game has had one returning companion from a previous game(I'm not counting Merrill). So, of the DAI cast, who is most likely to be returning in a game most likely set in the north of Thedas somewhere.

Varric maybe....But I don't see how Anders can return. The abomination is either Killed by Hawke OR presumably by Justice at some point.
As for Oghren.......I read that David Gaider regretted writting Oghren into Awakening, so I highly doubt he'll appear in DA:4.....or even DA:I DLC.

Yeah, if the next game is set in Tevinter, Dorian is a shoe-in to turn up... but not necessarily as a playable companion.

I really expect that if the game is set in Tevinter and if its has something to do with the Qunari we will be seeing a smargasborg of cameos and appeareances.  Dorian, Iron Bull, Sten, Perhaps Isabella,

God, I don't want to lose Varric but I know his time will be up after Inquisition.

Uh... The character I want? Bull. Definitely Bull. The most likely character?

Bull, **** everyone else, just **** 'em

I'm sure there'll be new books by Varric all over the codex, though.

I think scout harding is the Cullen of DAI, like cullen had many fans in DAO and DA2 eventually he have been made a romance option, I think the same will happend with Scout Harding in the future.

Harding, Cole, Dorian, IB maybe but he can have a fairly divergent story line, and all three advisers are still possible for some capacity

I'm kind of very interested how Inquisition would fall(because it would, right? enemies striking from the shadows, Morrigan's foreshadowing and all that), so it would be a disappointment for me if we suddenly leave all the companions and the endgame mystery behind and go to Seheron. With Scout Harding, no less.

If the next game heads up north, Dorian would probably make the most sense. No issues with that. I liked him a lot more than I thought I would.

I'd like to see Cassandra as a companion again, because she's awesome. Scout Harding in a companion role would be interesting, especially considering I doubt we'll be seeing Sigrun again. Dwarf rogues are fun.

well cullen has been in every game thus far and not as a companion... but i doubt it's cullen.

Dorien is possible, but i'm not sure he was "memorable" enough.  he didn't make any impression on me in my playthrough.  the one thing about those returning characters is they were all "memorable" in some way,

That leaves Sara or Iron Bull as the likely ports to the next game.  My money is on Iron Bull, because he's a bro, and if there is one thing Bioware established in Mass Effect with Garrius, is that bro companions are best companions.

Outside chance is Scout Harding.  Personally i loved scout harding, my fav "non-playable" character in Inquisition.

I'm betting we get an adult Cole.

Of all the characters his is the one with the most development potential.

I think you misinterpreted my post. I'm saying that each game so far has had one companion returning from the game that came immediatley before it.
