What I didn't like was that the companions and advisors were so disproportional many men that almost all women were romanceable. In Bioware games in general, a much higher proportion of female companions are romanceable than males. As such, I am glad that Scout Harding isn't romanceable (even though she is adorable and could probably get a good romance story), because it would border on ridiculous that every woman close to the inquisitor can fall in love with her/him.
So, points to Bioware for making a smaller part of the females romanceable (than usual) and a larger part of the males (than usual), leading to the "unfair treatment" of more romanceable options among male than female characters. If Bioware just focus on writing a good, diverse group of companions, there will be good romance options.
So far, I have in two playthroughs romanced Cassandra with my Human Atheist Mage, and Iron Bull with my Female Atheist Qunari. I didn't think the different view on religion, mage circles, and the chantry would work well in a relationship with Cassandra, but it actually felt genuine and cute. I think the side you see in Cassandra in her romance scene and with her book craving revealed a depth in the character that I was not expecting.
I felt the female relationship with Iron Bull was a fresh new take. Iron Bull felt like an equal to my inquisitor, and allowed my very strong female leader to be able to also have a sexual side without feeling the need to be overly promiscuous.
I would like the option though for future games to increase diversity more, and perhaps be able to be in polygamous relationships or be more promiscuous. It should of course not be something that works in every romance combination, but if we for example had Isabella and Iron Bull as companions, I would fully expect (with their personalities) it to be possible to romance them both at the same time. I liked for example how a hardened Leliana could be ok with sleeping with Isabella in DA:O, but how a romanced Morrigan would disapprove. It strengthens the characters, and the replayability, if characters can react differently to relationships.
I would also like some more conflict between companions, and thus reactions to relationships. I liked how Wynne and Alistair reacted to my relationship with Morrigan in DA:O, or how Isabella would talk to you if you romanced Merril. In DA:I, I didn't feel like any companions or advisors reacted in banter or dialogue (the only one commenting on my relationship with Iron Bull was Krem, and he might be dead at that point in many playthroughs).
Overall, I like for Bioware to test their boundaries more and move outside of their comfort zone. It is ok to do an attractive female scholar or knight in shining armour as a romance option, but don't do it all the time. I don't mind race specific or gender specific romances that we had in DA:I, compared to how DA:2 was, but make sure that there are always enough options for each race to have some choices with different personalities.
