So far I've romanced Solas, Dorian, and I have just started my Cullen romance playthrough. From what I have seen in game I don't understand how the female romance options can be considered disempowering.

What disappoints me though is that every time this kind of thread pops up people comment that certain characters (most often Cas) are not "pretty" enough to be a desirable romance option. To me that sounds incredibly shallow. I didn't romance Garrus or Solas for their looks, but because they are well written, complex characters. Frankly, I'd have romanced Garrus even if he had been a hanar.

Given how popular the Solas romance seems to be, it's my hope that they will give it the same attention that the Garrus' romance received in ME3.

There is always one isnt there? I would say your problem is that you have such a skewed perception of equality due to society putting the heterosexual male on such a high pedestal that any move towards true equality seems like punishment to heterosexual males, I am not asking for heterosexual males to be punished I am asking for equality and a little bit of respect towards female gamers, is that too much to ask?

Good grief!  You "loved Cullen's cute awkwardness and how Blackwall constantly felt unworthy of your affections as if you were some sort of goddess," but fault men for wanting similarly attractive and receptive partners? I personally find Cassandra to be lovely inside and out, but can certainly understand that she would appeal more to Jaheira, rather than Aerie, fans. Some folks enjoy more challenge in their relationships. Others are looking for more affirmation. Neither preference is "wrong," in either men or women.

I really fail to see how allowing female characters to entertain polygamous relationships and designing less traditionally pretty and harder-to-get love interests for heterosexual males would promote "equality" and/or respect for female gamers and would really rather that the respect card be reserved for actual instances of disrespect.

What I didn't like was that the companions and advisors were so disproportional many men that almost all women were romanceable. In Bioware games in general, a much higher proportion of female companions are romanceable than males. As such, I am glad that Scout Harding isn't romanceable (even though she is adorable and could probably get a good romance story), because it would border on ridiculous that every woman close to the inquisitor can fall in love with her/him.

So, points to Bioware for making a smaller part of the females romanceable (than usual) and a larger part of the males (than usual), leading to the "unfair treatment" of more romanceable options among male than female characters. If Bioware just focus on writing a good, diverse group of companions, there will be good romance options.

So far, I have in two playthroughs romanced Cassandra with my Human Atheist Mage, and Iron Bull with my Female Atheist Qunari. I didn't think the different view on religion, mage circles, and the chantry would work well in a relationship with Cassandra, but it actually felt genuine and cute. I think the side you see in Cassandra in her romance scene and with her book craving revealed a depth in the character that I was not expecting.

I felt the female relationship with Iron Bull was a fresh new take. Iron Bull felt like an equal to my inquisitor, and allowed my very strong female leader to be able to also have a sexual side without feeling the need to be overly promiscuous.

I would like the option though for future games to increase diversity more, and perhaps be able to be in polygamous relationships or be more promiscuous. It should of course not be something that works in every romance combination, but if we for example had Isabella and Iron Bull as companions, I would fully expect (with their personalities) it to be possible to romance them both at the same time. I liked for example how a hardened Leliana could be ok with sleeping with Isabella in DA:O, but how a romanced Morrigan would disapprove. It strengthens the characters, and the replayability, if characters can react differently to relationships.

I would also like some more conflict between companions, and thus reactions to relationships. I liked how Wynne and Alistair reacted to my relationship with Morrigan in DA:O, or how Isabella would talk to you if you romanced Merril. In DA:I, I didn't feel like any companions or advisors reacted in banter or dialogue (the only one commenting on my relationship with Iron Bull was Krem, and he might be dead at that point in many playthroughs).

Overall, I like for Bioware to test their boundaries more and move outside of their comfort zone. It is ok to do an attractive female scholar or knight in shining armour as a romance option, but don't do it all the time. I don't mind race specific or gender specific romances that we had in DA:I, compared to how DA:2 was, but make sure that there are always enough options for each race to have some choices with different personalities.

I romanced Josephine, and I had a great time. She is a complete sweetheart, and there was some seriously amazing content with her; however I have a few gripes with the romances for male players. My biggest issue is that the romance content for males seem to lack "substance". It just feels like Bioware pegged male gamers (specifically males) as voracious sex monsters who don't care for their lovers opinions. For example, Cassandra's romance has substance up until the sex scene, than she just becomes "ur bae". And Josephine had great content, (as I mentioned earlier) but her interactions with you were diminished by not having any heavy hitting moments (the closest it got was the dual with Otranto). Meanwhile Dorian had a fantastic romance, until (like Cassandra) you bedded him and he becomes bae; as opposed to being someone who was your equal, he just becomes your sex pillow. Iron Bull is just sex hungry, and this isn't completely bad, it fits his character. And even then, he manages to work in some decent content. As for future romance content, I'd like to see some romances for male players that don't immediately get reduced to "we're boning now" right after you get to the sex scene. If Bioware could use Cullen and, Blackwall's romance content as "roadmaps" for male gamer romances that would kick ass. In short, Bioware made great progress with good DA romance content. It just didn't reach both of the sexes, and I feel like this could be improved upon for male gamers who (like me) want deeper more fulfilling content as opposed to aforementioned sex pillows. Just saying, it could have been better.

I'd like in the near future a DLC with more Solas. If Morrigan had her Witch Hunt, we deserve a Wolf Hunt.  ^_^

I'm enjoyng Bull's romance a lot, and I have in program a run for Cassandra.

For the future, I must admit I'd like a Dwarf romance, like Dagna, Harding, or Varric.

But I would not run away from Abelas  Elf is the new blue for my ladyes...

I guess I'm a bit of a masochist. I loved the Solas romance. I did a Cullen-mance playthrough and... it was what I expected it to be. Full of fluff and sweetness which is great, but it's not really my cuppa. Much prefer Solas romance, despite the heart-shattering ending of it.

Dorian left me for Tevinter and Iron Bull can only top apparently. So, Cassandra is my favorite.

But srsly for reasons: Cassandra is awesome, the way she has a hilarious soft side and the way she is a hopeless romantic: I feel bad not romancing her, then she'll just be left with her books for the rest of her life.

Great romance with Cullen. Am doing a romance with Cassandra next. Haven't really engaged with any of the other characters yet, so not tempted to try a romance yet.

As for the OPs pov, as a woman who feels very empowered, I don't get the issue. Sorry.

I'm fairly sure the OP is a troll, though likely a troll not interested in riling up dissenting opinion.  Instead I think troll wants to see how many people will agree with the ridiculous sentiments they expressed, and maybe how many people in the community need some serious perspective.

I've only done Josephine and Cassandra, and I really have no interest in pursuing other romances because I can never get myself to role-play someone of a different gender.

I wished I could have romanced Leliana though. It could've been set in a way that the only time you can ever romance her is when she's not with the Warden, which is set in the Keep.

I also thought of letting my Inquisitor go single, as I could not bring myself to be attracted to either of the options available to me. It's ok to bring in attractive females. It won't be "shallow" I promise.

I've romanced two only so far, Cullen and Dorian.  Cullen was very sweet, but the awkwardness wasn't what I expected from the man we first met (Oh, my goodness...are you saying what I think you're saying? and then he runs off - was one of my favourite scenes in the game).  I enjoyed Dorian's because it had a very 'real' feeling to it, like I've had relationships like that before with the regular sarcasm for ones own protection and fear of expressing yourself.  I really enjoyed both of them, and will be romancing all of the characters, Solas is next and I'm really looking forward to that one.  Admittedly, the one I'm least looking forward to is Sera.  I just...don't really like her character, which I know isn't a really popular opinion, but sorry.

Done Sera about four-five times, once with Cass....

So it's obvious who my favourite is.

One thing I have to say about Cass though, and that is; WOW. I'm envious of the vibe in that romance, wish I had that with Sera though I'm well aware that she's more of a "fun" LI rather than a "serious/passionate".

Future romances?

Mother Giselle.

No. I'd take Sera again, or a female Tal Vashoth with a funny Hawke type personality would be interesting.

I'd be down for a Minaeve romance in the next game. Shame she can possibly die, however.

As for my favorites in Inquisition? Cassandra and Sera. Would have liked a few flirt options with Morrigan and Leliana. Even if only to be hilariously shot down with "well, I don't think the Warden would approve" (at least in my file).

After Anders and Solas it turns out you really can't go wrong with a male mage LI. Wish we could romance Anders in Awakening, though(yeah, like THAT'd end well).

Sera's nice, Cassandra's wonderful, Iron Bull's funny, Cullen's good. But it's hard to start a new game and not romance Solas.

As for the next game. I think I'd like to romance someone evil. Imshael was a great character, only, well, a touch _too_ demonic. A Tevinter magister(like the ones from the codex, sacrificing slaves, engaging in power plays and romances behind those power plays, and more power plays, and missing slaves) would be great. Betrayals, redemptions, murder, breakups, stealing stuff, killing rivals - I don't care, as long as it's good.

Better yet... I'd like to be the evil one.

I'd like to be able to throw punches at my LI then be rewarded with hate sex.

They are all good with different flavor:

Cullen - the most "normal" romance with a guaranteed happy ending, sweet scenes and everything.

Blackwall - the most dramatic with an element of tragedy (because his personal life).

Ironbull - the funniest and easiest (a bit too comical to my taste)

Solas - the most emotional (and educational too :) ). Probably the best among others yet without a single sex scenes in it - amazing.

Can not comment on girls and Dorian from personal experience but according to youtube Cassandra and Dorian are perfect and  Sera's romance is very in character and extremely cute. Oh, and Josephine's as romantic as romance goes.

I romanced Josie in my first playthrough and it was sweet, fluff and funny. I loved it and I am very happy I chose her.

I am now romancing Solas, and I am very into him. It appears that there is a side of me that likes to have its heart broken by pixel mages.

I'd love to romance Dorian, Cassandra and Cullen, but I am afraid if I do three more playthroughs, my partner will think I have finally lost it...

As for future romances, well, I am really, really fond of Krem. I would definitely romance him.

And... uhm... I suppose wanting Varric is an hopeless cause...

In all honesty straight males only have 1 female interest (Cass). Straight females have 3 (BW, Cullen, and Solas for Elves only, but still straight). IB and Jose are shared between males and females and of course the gay/lesbian only chars Sera and Dorian. At least with the 1st 2 games males and females shared the amount of love interests (1 straight for each and 2 shared). To answer the OPs question, Cass all the way.

Seems to me you're the one limiting your own romance options. Just because the player is a straight male does not mean the PC has to be a straight male. Too many people do not understand the concept of role-playing. Women seem to understand more out of necessity since women pretty much did not have access to female PCs for so many years. As a result, straight male is usually the one type of character I don't play in Bioware games since I can get that 90% of the time in other games on the market.

Well, going to admit my horribly obsessive gaming habits here, but, I have done all of the romances except Solas.

Here are my impressions

Josephine. I loved that it was a sweet, romantic, romance that it feels like you are winning her affection over time. It is paced slowly and I dig that for her character

Sera. My cannon LI, lot of fun at first but does seem to develop into something much deeper. Sera grows as a person. I love the crazy girls (Leliana is my Wardens LI)

Cullen. Very sweet. Good pacing. Good amount of emotional depth. Funny scenes with his people always walking in on you

Cassandra. Love her character. Love it. Her romance however felt a little weird for me. Candles and poetry in the woods? Meh.

Dorian. Love his character. Didn't care for his romance. Just felt kind of bland.

Iron Bull. Funny and fun to start, but I felt it actually fell through when he started getting 'emotional'. Not sure if it's the VA or the writing but I think it really drops off

Blackwall. Ok, have to admit I only did part of his romance. I broke up with him after the reveal because trust. And, he is kind of a sour puss. Let's talk about torturing dogs. Yay... (I know that happens even without romance).

Solas. **** this guy. Can't stand his hypocrisy

To be honest, I was slightly disappointed with the romances in Inquisition. Not with the actual romantic content, which I haven't seen yet, but with the characters that are available for the Inquisitor. I played a human female mage and this was the first character in a Bioware game that felt really lonely. She felt like an outcast, completely misunderstood, with a group of followers who saw only a savior they worshipped and failed to recognize that there is also a person beneath all that.

Btw, a romance-free playthrough is missing something, I think. I lacks a bit of personality and uniqueness.

I've romanced Iron Bull, Solas, and currently working on Cullen.

I was personally very uncomfortable with the dom/sub turn the Bull romance took, so it will be unlikely that I ever attempt it again.  Love the character, just not being told what I "need" in bed.

Solas was perfection.  I'm obsessed with the narrative possibilities of his character, and Patrick Weekes hit it on the nose - a romance with Solas is the best way to understand the mystery and tragedy of the character...I honestly recommend it for every player to experience, even if it's for story purposes only.

Cullen is adorable & it's a nice palate refresher after Solas, but I miss the elf.  Luckily I can avoid temptation by rolling a human.

Dorian is next, and it's unfortunate that I've already flirted with him on every female playthrough thus far because I will know them like the back of my hand by the time my male Quizzie gets around to using them.  Worth it.

I'm only about halfway through, but I did manage to get to the first romance scene with Cassandra. It's miles above the other romances in Bioware games, so well writtne. Cass has very cute side to her that she never shows, good stuff Bioware. Shame about the dialogue bug that is plaguing the game at the moment.

The IB and Sera trolling Cass about the romance is the greatest thing ever.

Playthrough 1: Cassandra; really enjoyed Cassandra's romance, the pacing, the ties to the main plot, the character development, don't get the complains about Cassandra's appearance, either. Want to find out what happens with her romance next (She became Divine in my playthrough)

Playthrough 2: Cullen; boring, predictable.

- He just doesn't "fit" my Inquisitor, which is odd considering they're a pro-templar Andrastrian - feels like the romance was aimed at a pro-mage mage character who has Cullen give up on lyrium - which this Inquisitor is not - really wish I had romanced Josephine instead as that would have at least fit the nobility side of this Inquisitor.

- Felt like his "friendship" arc with my first character was far better than his "romance" arc with my second.

- Also suffers from not being a actual companion, hope Josie doesn't have the same issue.

- I liked the extra dialogue if you take the templar spec though, that was pretty cool.

Have plans to romance all characters across 8 characters eventually... will take a while though :P

Done Dorian twice, Iron bull once and Cullen once.

And they are all good but its up to what you prefer in a romance. Dorian and Cullen are more safe and actual romances while IB is more of a... Fanfiction romance I don't know how to put it really.
