Personally I think 8 skills is way more than enough. Especially when you can't really spam skills in this game. There's a limit, and while this game can be played as an action RPG that doesn't mean they have to litter the screen with skills. I find that the fewer skills you can hold on the hot-bar the more you learn to appreciate them. Especially when you take into consideration that you can upgrade those skills to give them different effects.
The more you play the more you'll find yourself only using 2-3 spells/skills anyway because you'll find them the most useful/damaging. Having more skills doesn't always lead to a better experience, especially when it comes to end game since by then you've found the perfect combination of skills to maximize your damage output.

I think if the bar just had like 12 slots it would be perfect. Pretty much everyone is gonna end up with 9 or so skills, since each tree has 4 skills for the most part. Two trees maxed+focus ability is ~9, and it's possible to have a few more than that. They made the game, you'd think they'd notice their spell bar is a few short of what most people's max would be ![]()

+1. It's not that 8 slots is *limited* as such, it's that the way the spell/skill system works means that, in most cases, normal play will mean you're unlocking spells you don't have room to use, in order to access new passives. Most players will have filled 8 slots well before they hit high levels.I think if the bar just had like 12 slots it would be perfect. Diablo 3 had a similar system but compensated by a) unlocking spells via level, rather than skill points and
On the plus side, it does encourage one to upgrade and specialise rather than try to do jack-of-all-trades.

The problem is mainly for mages, since their attacks are elemental and different creatures have different resistances and susceptibilities. I do not have enough slots to carry 1 or 2 of each spell class plus barrier, CC and a focus power.
It's just an annoyance for regular fights, but for boss battles it is a strong incentive to metagame, to pre-configure and perhaps even respec before a big fight.

Yeah. Respecc'ing before fights is generally an indication your levelling system isn't working. You should be able to handle any opponent in your level range without having to reshuffle your deck.
On the other hand, this is where storm spells shine. You can artificially apply weaknesses to a target using stuff like chain lightning and upgraded energy barrage.

8 spells are enough, imo.
I just remember that hell of buttons for DAO mages, too much of stuff, got confused by the time of DAA, so just went to Arcane Warrior path and charged into battle.
I think it (reducing the number of active spells) was a very convenient thing to do, actually.

So I like how everybody's forgotten about the ability wheel in the previous games. Limited buttons on the controller have nothing to do with it. And as previous posters have pointed out, we normally HAVE to take abilities we'll never use in order to get a useful passive.

Caught my tank inquisitor using "Shield wall" despite it not being one of the eight selected powers. So leaving it to the AI to use extra powers can work.

8 is not enough for me on my rogue, atleast give me 12. I really hate hotkeying my focus ability and mark of death but atm i have no choice.

It's pretty clearly influenced by the controller setup - 8 slots, 2x 4 buttons, too much of a coincidence.
Regarding the overall point... You are right, of course. Regardless of the controller's lack of buttons, there were ways of offering more than 8 slots that could have been done, with the only sacrifice being that it wouldn't have been as 'action'-orientated.
