Kaidan, Vega, EDI, Miranda - and I'm the first to even mention the poor guy.

As I said before, I can't pick a favorite. I'd have preferred EDI not have a body, but she is a great character. I'm not sure of whom you speak above, Kaiden or James. I love them both. Awesome dudes. Miranda should've been a bigger part of ME3. The decision to exclude her from the crew in ME3 was a poor one, in my opinion. She would've been one of the first logical recruitments.

I was talking about Kaidan. A few people (not many) mentioned Vega. I just realised that the four I mentioned are probably the most useful squadmates in the game. In ME3, Vega, EDI and Kaidan had the highest health/shields and all had defensive powers, two could carry assault rifles, Kaidan had biotics and tech in both ME1 & ME3 and Miranda had both overload and warp in ME2 not to mention her class ability that increased weapon damage and health for the entire squad. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I like squadmates that are useful (unlike the squishy Tali and Liara) but even if they weren't so badass, I'd still love them. I have to give  special shoutout to Ashley, who I really liked in ME1 but became a useless barbie with a big gun in ME3 with her bugged power.

The problem for Kaidan, I imagine, is that a fair few people probably offed him on Virmire. I did. I much preferred Ash in ME so picking her over Kaidan was a fairly straight forward choice.

It was only after ME3, where Kaidan's content is so much better than Ash's, that I went back and saved him on Virmire to drag him through into ME2 and ME3.

Kaidan gets a bad rap no question but for me, he gets much better in the series whereas Ashley becomes more unlikeable (I still like her, just not so much in ME3). Oh and everyone wants Garrus to be their best bud.

I liked Kaidan and Ash equally in ME. I have never understood how people could dislike or find Kaidan boring in ME. ME3 definitely ruined Ash, for me. It was disappointing. I'd have likely been surprised and dismayed, had I not first experienced that ending. Ugh.

They may struggle with endings, life-like hair, and a number of other things, but BioWare is definitely the best when it comes to writing characters.

You're the first person I've seen say they liked both Ashley and Kaidan in ME1. All I ever hear is how Wrex/Garrus/Tali are the t-ts and how they hate either Ashley or Kaidan or both. For me, they were my favourite two squaddies and I keep them around as long as I can in ME1. It still breaks my heart on Virmire when I have to choose to save only one, especially as Wrex is a killable character anyway.

I've only ever disliked one squad-mate in a BioWare game, and that's Sera from DAI. She's uneducated, willfully ignorant, narrow-minded, obnoxious and doesn't follow orders. That covers most of my dislike. Still, all that said, I bet I could learn to like her if I could bear to play the game again. It is not my cup of tea, despite some great characters and lore.

I feel like fan-service really hindered Mass Effect. Tali's presence on the SR2 in Mass Effect 3, rather than being with her fleet, is one example of narrative being sacrificed for fan-service. There are other examples. I like Tali, but that was silly.

I've been playing DAI almost non-stop since it came out trying to make myself fall in love with it the same way I do ME... but I just can't. It's beautiful and the characters are somewhat compelling but the Inquisitor feels like some no-face, nobody and the story is weak enough without it being watered down with hours of insipid sidequests between main story missions. I think maybe I convinced myself I liked the Dragon Age series more than I actually do because it's Bioware and I ended up getting hyped for a game that ended up being just... OK.

As for a Sera, as an English person, to me, the way she talks makes her sound mentally handicapped and she can't decide if she's from the North or a cockney. It is just... bad. The way she says "Right?" and "Yeah?" after everything she says... ugh. Oh and I took her and Vivienne out with me yesterday and she literally farted, Vivienne smelt it and was quite rightly disgusted and Sera just giggled like a 4 year old. I thought, "What the hell am I playing??"

Yeah, that pretty much sums up both Sera and the game. I was able to tolerate DA's horrible gameplay in the shorter precursors, but the 101 hour playthrough I put into DAI revealed to me just how much I hate this game's dated gameplay mechanics and animations. I love the world. I'll keep up with the novels as long as they are good. I will not buy another DA game until it's made into an "action-RPG" like ME. I'm not holding my breath.

The best fantasy action RPG gameplay I've experienced was probably Dragon's Dogma (so much else wrong with it but the combat was excellent). I only wish that Bioware would go the whole hog with the over-the-shoulder elements of gameplay and forget all that point-and-click crap from 10 years ago. I play on PC but with a controller but the rest of the PC crowd would riot if that happened though. They're upset that they can't click on the ground to move.

I know. It makes me sad that the gameplay is held hostage because of this. It will ultimately kill the series, I think. The crowd in favor of 90s era PC gameplay is likely nothing compared to the numbers who would flock to a quality, BioWare action-RPG. Mass Effect has grown into a "AAA" IP for a reason. It combines BioWare's writing with quality gameplay that appeals to a wide audience. DA gameplay is terrible. :(
