For me, it was Solas.  It's not that I outright hate the guy -- with his deadpan eccentric personality, I just thought he was the least interesting out of all the companions.  His connection with the Fade and his views thereof were fairly interesting, but it wasn't enough to really engross me like other companions did.

Also, from a gameplay standpoint, as much as I wanted it to be my favorite mage specialization going in, I just couldn't get into Rift Mage like I did the other two.

Once I started collecting more companions and therefore had more options for party builds, I benched Solas and there he stayed for the vast majority of the rest of the game.

Ironically enough, though, by the end of the game, next to Iron Bull (who I romanced, and who wasn't too thrilled with me for a while after I had made the decision to dissolve the Circles), it was Solas who liked me the most.  Seriously, the guy jumped for joy at every decision I made.  I don't think there was a single time in the game where I got disapproval from him.

Other frequent bench warmers included Cassandra, and, sadly enough, Sera.

Blackwall I thought he was boring and Cole I just don't know why but I didn't use him that much.  I'll try to use them more on another playthrough though.

Cole, because I was a dual-wielding rogue.

Blackwall. I just started to bring him out to actually see that he is actually a little interesting. He was downright sarcastic to Cole in one of the party banters and I was kind of shocked because I didn't know he had it in him.

Also Vivienne. I don't need her when I have Solas and Dorian.

Sera, because I couldn't stand her.

And Vivienne, because I wanted to hit her with a chair.

Cole followed by Blackwall. Everyone else I used more or less regularly.

IB and Cole because they just die all the time.

In my first playthrough, I haven't used Vivienne, Sera and Cole. That's mostly because I feel the game has too many companions and I don't want to swap gear around.

"I am your trainer" :P

Anyway, my most frequent bench warmer is Cole since I usually bring people that have some connection with the quest I'm doing/ team YOLO ( Iron Bull, Sera ) for their banters. Next one is probably Dorian cuz he usually casts his necromancer's abilities and I have to wait till that mob which he makes dies, so that I can get the quest done. I'm bringing him more often tho, but I don't have plans to bring Cole.

Sera (petulant child), Vivianne (arrogant ******) and Blackwell (liar and douche). I only once took Sera and Vivianne out together because of banter knowing they hated each other as much hated them both. Blackwell I took only out when was a warden mission prior to learning about him being a liar and despite thinking he was a douche. Now that I have hindsight he will be used even less. Other than that I tried to have one warrior, one rogue and my character filled a mage spot so left one open to someone else without class restriction.

The rogues. The A.I just doesn't know how to use them, to the extent that I started again as a rogue so I'd have one in my party.

Cole. I took him literally nowhere.

It doesn't help that I already was playing a DW rogue.

Iron bull cause he's a gimp. So was sten when I think about it. Maybe it's a qunari thing to look tough but be weak as hell in actual combat. The arishock got 2 shot not counting the flask I hurled at him by my assassin hawke too. I guess they just suck.

Weird you felt Solas was underpowered as a rift Mage. IMO, Solas is the Mage the AI uses the best.

Cole was my benchwarmer. Aside from the fact that my Inquisitor was already a dual-wielding rogue, Cassandra, Varric, Solas, Sera and Dorian were my priority characters for the main story missions. Vivienne was not very frequent either, but she was my dragon-hunting mage, since I pretty much spec'd her to do cold damage to all the fire-breathing types, with Dorian providing support against the ice-breathing variety with fire damage, and Solas was all electric because electric attacks are awesome.

Cole just since I went dual wield and didn't need a second. And I guess also Vivianne's since I really do think she is a bad guy just working to get rid of another bad guy.

Wow. 2 shot on the Arishok! My arishok got kited around by my healer Mage Hawke for 20 minutes. Not sure that's any better though.

I used everyone a little bit. My most frequent used companions were Varric and Cassandra.

If I had to guess, the one I used least was Dorian. Not because of any particular dislike, I just think it ended up that way.

Sera... if you count rejecting her 'job interview' for joining by murdering someone.

Among people I actually recruited, Cole (because my first playthrough was with mages chosen, so he kind of came out of nowhere and I was playing as a rogue) who I never took anywhere and spoke to maybe once. Vivienne at first but after specializations came in, I took her out a lot more. I used Bull a bit at first but he was kind of useless compared to Cassandra and Blackwall, so he didn't come out much.

Now, if banter worked, I'd be mixing things up all the time to hear dialogue! Sadly, with the situation as it is I have to choose purely based on stats, which is gross.

Iron Bull, Blackwall. Mainly because I am a 2-H warrior and where I go, Cassandra goes. :P

Vivienne, because her banter is.... boring.

Cole because he dies too fast as an AI controlled dagger rogue.

Cole, for being Squishy McSquish.

Varric, for Bianca being a water-gun compared to the bows I've found for Sera.

Solas, because I have the exact opposite experience of OP, where Solas disapproves of just about every damn word that comes out of my mouth.

my first benchwarmer was Varric because I am playing a Rogue and I wanted to run a Warrior, Rogue , 2x Mage party setup.

I pretty much bench people based on their class. Cassandra is my tank and I alternated between Dorian, Vivienne and Solas as my two mages for the party.

On my next play through I plan to continue with a mage I have and I will switch out cassandra for Blackwall and keep Varric as i will need a rogue in the party now and then have to choose which mage i want which I will probably go back and forth on.

Cole and Sera. I was playing a dual-wielding rogue and I took Varric pretty much everywhere. There wasn't room for any more rogues even though I liked both characters and plan to use them in future playthroughs.
