Vivienne.

Full stop.

Ever since meeting her, I haven't used her even once. That high and mighty attitude is just disgusting and I pretty much disagree with all of her views on things. Might make an Inquisitor later on that's more in line with her thinking and try her out.

I was surprised to find Sera the more frequently used archer. Partly, it was because of her Tempest rogue capabilities, but the game provides some pretty decent bows too, which makes her pretty powerful.

Blandwall.  Character crisis was a nice twist, but his only redeeming quality is that he wants to try... but he doesn't want to tell you he wants to try.  I'm all for a loner trope but this guy... yawn fest.  Any wisdom he may have given is lost on lies.  The only companion where you have to clean up after on the war tables.

I don't use Sera because I don't like her.  I like Blandwall less but that's not really a compliment.

I've stopped using Solas after my first play-through.  Since I already know how that winds up I'd rather not build a team around expecting his kit (not that I plan on playing much post game content since I got 100% completion but future DLC might come into play).

Side note: Banter seems to work fine if you fast travel to the map of your choice via the war table.  Clunky, but there it is.

Side note 2: Craft Cole armor or a dagger with guard on hit and he isn't squishy even on nightmare.

Cole.  I just really don't need a dual-wielding rogue.  Unless I'm the one playing them, I've usually found that their AI is too dumb to make them that useful and their squishiness means I waste a lot of time trying to keep them alive when I could just have someone with a bow in back ranks doing pretty much everything I need a rogue to do and offensive based warrior doing all the DPS I need.

Varric and Cole. Mostly because I have no need for rogue since its either me or Sera.

Viv, because the AI *really* doesn't know how to Knight Enchanter. She actually managed to die in a dragon fight on Normal. That's just... poor. Also, I was already one and didn't suck. Plus I like Dorian's banter and damage, and Solas' knowledge of all things elfy.

Sera would have been used much more if I didn't find listening to her so utterly painful, she's a dps machine. So I ended up taking Cole along lots more than I'd anticipated and came to enjoy switching him and Varric for rogue duty.

Dorian, Varric, Cassandra and Iron Bull. While I like them, their specializations did nothing for me. I always end up reverting to Blackwall as a tank, Cole/Sera as my archer, and Solas as my damage/control mage and on my non-mage playthroughs I used both Solas and Viv.

I never saw much use for Necromancer and the having to wait until the target dies a second time in order to loot it got annoying.

For me, it was Solas.  It's not that I outright hate the guy -- with his deadpan eccentric personality, I just thought he was the least interesting out of all the companions.  His connection with the Fade and his views thereof were fairly interesting, but it wasn't enough to really engross me like other companions did.

Also, from a gameplay standpoint, as much as I wanted it to be my favorite mage specialization going in, I just couldn't get into Rift Mage like I did the other two.

Once I started collecting more companions and therefore had more options for party builds, I benched Solas and there he stayed for the vast majority of the rest of the game.

Ironically enough, though, by the end of the game, next to Iron Bull (who I romanced, and who wasn't too thrilled with me for a while after I had made the decision to dissolve the Circles), it was Solas who liked me the most.  Seriously, the guy jumped for joy at every decision I made.  I don't think there was a single time in the game where I got disapproval from him.

Other frequent bench warmers included Cassandra, and, sadly enough, Sera.

Solas.

Much like you i found him quite interesting whit all the fade talk and explonation of the spirits. Its trully a good info dump on two legs. Sadly somehow he become boring rather quick and whit far more interesting mage ( Vivienne ) he become a character i used on few occasions for quests and character recruting.

Iron Bull.

I really liked him. I found him awesome in every way possible. Problem is i play as a Qunari 2h fighter and i just cant stand to remove Cassandra who is by far one of my favorite characters. So Iron Bull just stays in Skyhold doing nothing. Really sad couse i do like that guy a lot.

Sera.

At first she was my "only" rouge in the party. Funy, crazy, chaotic and if she was LI for streight male i would have been whit her in a heartbeat. But then Cole came. The spirit of compasion. He is the only character who can shed a lot of light on every companion you have. Each of his banter dialogs are lore. He is also have very very fun mini game in skyhold if you listen to the banter of the random npc's there and then confront him about what they have said. So Sera just fallen behind by huge maring.

Blackwall.

Like him but ... despite reminding me of my gray warden i just cant get interested in him. Cool looking character but just not interesting.

Dorian.

Remind me Anders way too much - and no not the cool and funy Anders from Awakaning. The annoying Anders from DA:2

Varric.

He is compeating whit Sera and Cole - he flatout losses in every possible way.

Vivienne- Forgot she was there so hardly spoke to her and didn't really care what she had to say about anything so I Didn't have a reason to take her anywhere.

Varric- Not the same character from DA2!

Sadly, Varric.

I love the guy but haven't needed him in my party.

Vivienne isn't alowed on my team, ever. (Seriously, if I could kill her I would, and it'd be awesome.)

Varric because he's terrible, even IF you max out his Bianca he's still only 2-3DPS above a bow.

Blackwall and Cassandra because you don't need a shield to tank in this game. Reaver with all the guard/taunt stays alive just as easily and does 15x as much damage. (My second, and Nightmare playthrough is using Blackwall just to hear his banter and whatnot, still going to be making him 2h eventally, shields are terrible.)

All of the rogues. I see no use for them at all. I am using 3 warriors and a mage.

Iron Bull - he keeps dying on me unless I babysit him.

Cole - same as Iron Bull.

Vivienne - she's a power-hungry witch.

Blackwell - boring

Dorian - annoying

Vivienne and Sera. I NEVER used them unless they were a "locked" companion for a personal quest. As to why?:

Vivienne: Snobby b***h that I didn't want to be around. Her nose was so high in the air I'm surprised she doesn't drown when it rains

Sera: Just annoying. I have to control the impulse to not slap her whenever I'm around her. I think there should be an option tell Iron Bull to send her to the Qunari to have her mouth sewed shut. Then she might have been okay to handle... .... ..... nope, still leave her happy butt at Skyhold.

I also very seldom used Cassandra. I preferred using Blackwall, partially because I liked his Champion build that Cassandra didn't have. And Iron Bull I tried using more because I just love listening to his party banter, but he tends to die... a lot.

My party usually consists of Solas, Varric, Blackwall or Dorian, Cole, Blackwall. I think Blackwall is my only constant.

Varric, I think. I love the guy, but new characters are more fun. Also didn't bring Solas or Blackwall along much.

Cole, Sera, Dorian and Bull came along pretty frequently.

Sera and Varric because I didn't like their personalities and therefore it wasn't worth dealing with having rogues in the party.  Cole was a bit on the weak side, but he was awesome, so I let him tag along with the heavy hitters.  I made him an archer, though...

I've never understood this term what is a benchwarmer? is it like a Sub or an Emergency?

Sub: starts on the bench plays if you need them

Emergency: named in case someone take start on game day actually cut from the list before game starts.

I take them all out (mixed and matched) and I guess I've been lucky, I catch enough interesting dialogue to keep on swapping companions.  On the whole, I'd say Varric, Solas, and Iron Bull are benched more.

Generally it was the mages. I'm not really a fan of any of them. But I'd say Vivienne takes the gold. I disliked her intro(see side note) but then the first time I talked to her in Haven I freaking hated her. All that said I still think she's an awesome character just not one I like.

Side note: I wanted to kick that guys ass and she just walks in and steals that moment. Then just offers to kill him as if I would want him dead just for being a jackass. ******.

Cole and Sera, didn't hate them just found them less effective than Varric. Personally with a upgraded Bianca and Artificer(nades 4 days lol) he was more powerful than both imo

I was going to say Vivienne, but it's honestly probably Sera, since I didn't even recruit Sera until I was almost finished with the main quest. (I didn't know she existed).

I mostly left Vivienne behind, not because of her beliefs, but because she insisted on calling everyone "my dear" and "darling" all the time. Not my thing.

I tend to run around with Dorian exclusively as my mage.  I have swapped out and used everyone except for Vivienne.  I have never taken her with me.  I should try her sometime but I said it in another thread that whenever she says "my dear" I cringe.  She just comes off so full of herself but not in the same way as say Dorian.  I can laugh at him and actually fell in love with his character even though he is so dang prissy.  Just taking him to the storm coast and hearing his whining about being wet just wants me to be able to have my inquisitor turn to him and tell him to pull up his big boy underwear. He says things that just totally makes me laugh.

Cole. Simply because he just appeared out of nowhere to warn my of impending doom and then never did anything else except be super creepy.

I'm actually interested in learning more about him, so I go talk to him regularly. But it sure feels more like a house guest than a questing companion. Plus killing seems so out of character when you're talking to him.

His concept is very interesting though, quite fascinating.
