As a DW rogue Sera, Cole, and sometimes Varric got left behind.  As a mage it is the mage characters that tend to get left behind.  I have noticed in both games I start out using Bull early then along the way I swap him out for ranged dps mostly Varric.  Blackwall has been benched in both games in favor of Cass.

Cole.  Worst companion of all time... BioWare/Black Isle/SSI Gold box...  Cole was the worst.  I used him once, by accident.

Solas(because Dorian and my quiz are best friends and Vivienne is useful), Iron Bull(I love him, but it seems like all the armor I find can't be used on him), and Cole(dies too fast, plus he seems more useful hanging around Skyhold).

As a mage, I almost never used Solas or Vivienne.  Solas struck me as boring, like he did to a lot of other people it sounds.  Compared to Dorian, who's a bada$$.  I couldn't understand half of what came out of Sera's mouth.

I've never understood this term what is a benchwarmer? is it like a Sub or an Emergency?

 

Sub: starts on the bench plays if you need them

Emergency: named in case someone take start on game day actually cut from the list before game starts.

A benchwarmer is someone on a sports team who isn't good enough to play but wound up on the team for some reason or another... they almost never see any action, and are the last resort for the coach or manager.  And by that I mean they don't move from that spot unless everyone else is injured and the team is at risk of forfeit because they don't have enough players.  Technically these players are even worse than subs or emergency players because there is never an intention to let them play.

Sera (petulant child), Vivianne (arrogant ******) and Blackwell (liar and douche). I only once took Sera and Vivianne out together because of banter knowing they hated each other as much hated them both. Blackwell I took only out when was a warden mission prior to learning about him being a liar and despite thinking he was a douche. Now that I have hindsight he will be used even less. Other than that I tried to have one warrior, one rogue and my character filled a mage spot so left one open to someone else without class restriction.

Wow, your most hated people were my all-star team, I always brought Blackwall, Sera and Vivienne, and I loved all three of them. 

 

My benchwarmers were... well, everyone else? I only took other people if it was their "loyalty quest", so that it would be more fun on my next playthrough when I'm playing with an entirely different party. Solas was the only one who occasionally joined my team, but only for dragon fights. Double-barrier too good.

First playthrough, was Vivienne. My current and 2nd playthrough is Blackwall, because of his personal quest. I felt so betrayed...

In two play through so have only once had Vivienne join the party

Vivienne I found her very annoying and preachy.
Cole because he dies to easy

Blackwall cause he's boring. Cole because I'm using dual daggers.

Vivienne and Varric. The former because i can't stand her preachy self righteous personality and the latter because he's really slow and ineffective in combat. Archer wise Sera is just better in every way.

Sera (My Inquisitor is an archer)

 

Cole (don't want to micro-manage DW rogue all the time,not intrigued by his background);

 

Varric (See Sera; used him a bit cause I like the guy);

 

Vivienne (Pretty, tried to romance but got a talk to the hand kind of response; also I could see her voting for Bible huggin republicans)

 

Fixtures: Cassandra; Bull or Blackwall (rotating); Solas & Dorian, with a pinch of Viv.

Varric and sera. If I needed I rogue I prefer dual wielding than ranged. If in going ranged I'm using mages all the way.

Cole because I already was a dual-wielding rogue and his personality was kinda... weird. I'll try him again shortly.

 

Sera because she's just a terrible character.

Cole, Sera and Vivienne. Didn't really get to know Cole or Vivienne and tried to use Sera but she annoyed me too much and I found Varric to be the better rogue.

Varric. He has almost nothing to say almost till the end of game, has no gradual content unlocking like other companions, he is not the same for me than in DA2, i feel him flat. He is also not a badass, the crossbow is weak even with upgrades. Dorian also, until I disabled his mark of spirit because it was annoying, after that I took him with me more.

Cole. Almost forgot he was in the game he's that irrelevant.

In this playthrough, it's Cole, because this inquisitor thinks that taking him out to kill people is a bad idea, regardless of the circumstances. I'm sure another inquisitor will feel differently at some point.

Surprisingly, Iron Bull. I love Cassandra too much to bench her for him. Sera is a close second. The only reason she's not at the very bottom is because I'm *trying* to give her another shot after being so thoroughly repelled by her early on...but it's not going well for her. Especially not since I discovered how awesome it is to have Cole in the party.

Varric because I kept forgetting to upgrade Bianca.
IB and Cole because they vacuumed out my potions, and i don't want to micromanage that much.
I seem to prefer Cass+Solas+Dorian, lots of explosions lots of death.

I respecced Sera to DW once she got the spreialization and she is badass with the lighning flask, she never dies on me.
