So far... Sera. She can't stand my need to govern and not just knife every noble I see 50 times in the face for looking at me the wrong way.

Varric after anywhere but starting in hinterlands - felt weak, didn't do enough damage or make much of an impact in battles
Cass because her comments annoy
Sera - never took her out
Viv - never took her out after first game. Always go with Dorian then Solas in that order. She grates on my nerves.
Iron Bull - surprisingly this guy dies way way too easily. He does some damage but I find shied warriors with ability to boost their guard are better. They keep the attention on them and away from mages who when given higher level skills to a good amount of damage.
Cole - takes too much damage for a daggerist/assassin. Had to keep switching to him which only made me never want to play rogue. Stealth and deft hands were his only real advantage or commentary in places like crestwood.
My team was mostly Blackwall, Solas, and Dorian with some swaps but this was it. Viv made banter grating due to her rudeness. Cass could be rude too. Did like Cole but he was weaker than mages due to being in the fray. Bull was fun but died too much at decent levels where he really shouldn't have. Tried to respec and didn't help. Kind of funny because he comes off all badass but then just drops dead.

Iron Bull and Sera, Iron Bull I just don't like nor did I even need, and Sera pretty much got kicked out when she decided its a good idea to disapprove of EVERYTHING I do.

Cole and Sera. I didn't have any use for their talents.

Iron Bull - because 2h weapons in this game are weird and actually not effective. And also because I only needed one warrior with me and Cassandra or Blackwall always got picked first.
Cole - because you simply need an archer and a second rogue is useless. Also, it was mainly enough for me to just talk to him at Skyhold.
Vivienne - eh... she and my Inquisitor didn't see eye to eye. More importantly, though, I took here with me on a couple of missions and she never had anything interesting to say. So...
However, as much as possible, I tried to use all the party members, at least from time to time. But you only got three slots and you have to combine different classes, so it's not that easy.

Solas. Once I got Dorian I had no use for him. I used Viv every once in a while but since I'm a mage, i had no use for a third mage.
I'm starting to use Iron Bull in this playthrough by Speccing him as a sword and board. He actually stays alive longer but Cassendra is still better than him. That armor (or is it guard) she gives everyone makes her top notch. But I use Bull for banter.

It's pretty much which ever is made redundant by my Inq. I built my guys like a hockey team. I had a mob killing line, a dragon killing line, and a brick killing line. Which ever guy I duplicate sits at home. Sera might be annoying but find me another archer that can take 1/3-1/2 health off a dragon with their focus ability. Blackwall might be a little vanilla, but the blighter...doesn't...die... I don't have one character that isn't welcome if they fill a role.

"I am your trainer"
Anyway, my most frequent bench warmer is Cole since I usually bring people that have some connection with the quest I'm doing/ team YOLO ( Iron Bull, Sera ) for their banters. Next one is probably Dorian cuz he usually casts his necromancer's abilities and I have to wait till that mob which he makes dies, so that I can get the quest done. I'm bringing him more often tho, but I don't have plans to bring Cole.
"I am your Trainer" That was hilarious. My first playthrough. What's your name? I am your trainer. LOL That cracked me up.
Anyway my bench warmer would be Iron Bull. I took on some missions but I thought Blackwall was better at defense. But mostly these are my benchwarmers
1. Sera
2.Cole
3.Iron Bull
4.Vivienne.
Actually I am doing another playthrough as a male mage. I am going to try to bring Vivienne along. The last playthrough I didn't recruit her. This will be my third playthrough.
My main party consist of Dorian Varric and Blackwall. I change it when fighting dragons. Then I would have Dorian, Solas and Blackwall.

Cole's a sweetheart, but it's like he trips over his own feet and falls on his daggers sometimes. Just...how are you taking that much damage, kid?! I want to take him with me, but I don't like having to stop and pick him up off the ground every couple of minutes because he got hit twice and got flattened.
I found Varric's skill tree to be the most useful, so he mostly dominated my rogue slot.
I don't entirely get how to 'Knight-Enchanter' just yet, and neither does the game apparently?, so Vivienne also takes a backseat. That, and she can't stop being an elitist snob for three seconds. She even snipped at Blackwall and all he did was try to be gentlemanly. 'I saw you take a blow in the last fight. Are you alright?' "Aren't you precious?" '...I fail to see where I have caused offense.' So do I, Blackwall. So do I. A part of me wants to like her...but come on! It's like she can't help herself from saying something rude 99% of the time. You're always right, I get it. Please stop reminding me. xD
I don't have a lot of need for a 2H warrior unfortunately, so the Iron Bull frequently stays home.
But, with the exception of Vivienne--and sometimes Sera and even Solas--they aren't staying behind because I don't like them...but because I've just got things to do and too many people to take with me.

I was playing an archer-rogue, so Varric was the least frequent companion for my first playthrough. I talked to him all the time, though. I focused Sera on melee, and she was a beast. I tried to use everybody, though.

Viv, Cole, Solas and Sera usually end up sitting around.
Viv and Solas because Dorian is usually my mage, beside myself. Cole dies really fast and he and Sera usually have to sit things out anyway because of Varric.

Generally it's whoever best fits the same class as I do. My first playthrough it was Cole because I was a DW rogue, plus you get him so late compared to the others (still plenty early, but I kind of rushed the first playthrough - only 50 hours and 15 were before Skyhold with the Hinterlands being the only area I fully explored -- well almost no Felandaris for the one thingy). I also can't find much use for Iron Bull unless I'm bringing 2 warriors (which I am starting to a bit, but never did the first playthrough) - the sword+shield tank is just better. I know I can assign them different set-ups, but I like keeping the defaults.

Iron Bull.
It just happened to work that way. I should do a playthrough with him more. Although, he is the companion I like the least.

Cole: he's fascinating but has a death wish.

Vivienne. Which is a bit of a shame because her banter, although rare, is bitchily perfect. As I've said elsewhere, IRL I would move suburbs to avoid a character like her. But that's a mark of good writing. She and Sera/Bull interacting crack me up no end on the rare occasions I make the effort to take her out.
But Solas gets the maging job done, or Dorian, if you want a bit more flash and a bit less mope.

You don't have to wait until they die, you just hit the spell he cast and they die right away.

Viv and Sera because I could do without ever having met them. So they pretty much stand in their special places and I visit them every now and then to check up on them. And go off and do things with my friends. ![]()

Cole and sadly varric, Sera is a must in my party so its rare when I run two rogues.

Vivienne. At least Sera has some interesting banter, sometimes. Nothing Viv can do that Dorian/Solas can't, she didn't even know how to KE properly and thus kept dying... and she was constantly judging every single party member.

Nobody, really. With a party of 7, everybody gets some fresh outdoors (why 6-7 is my ideal size; 8+ gets too crowded).

Blackwall is the only one who I don't feel guilty about not using and make an "ugh" face every time I drag him along.
